for all you elder scrolls gurus: what was going on in skyrim

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:56 pm

I know skyrim takes place 200 years after oblivion. I'm just wondering if there is any books or knowledge as to what was going on in skyrim so when i go back and play some oblivion i can day dream about it lol :P

And as a side note: How come morrowind appears to be an isloated island yet it appears on the Oblivion map. I'm confused about that, thx

the same thing was going on all over tamriel during the oblivion crisis, oblivion gates opening up everywhere and daedra pouring out. morrowind is a province, Vvardenfel is the island part of the province.
oddly enough Vvardenfel is where the entire game of morrowind takes place (aside from expansions), and when people talk about morrowind, they ussually mean vvardenfel.

The Oblivion Crisis of the 3rd Era was not some isolated event. Mehrunes Dagon sought after ALL of Tamriel, not just Cyrodill. Skyrim, like every other province, desperatly fought back against the daedric hordes, with no end in sight. It is in fact this event that brought the Thalmor into power in the Summerset Isles.

Also, Morrowind the game took place on the isle of Vvardenfell, which is surrounded by mainland Morrowind which you see in the maps. Look at the map again, and you'll see that Morrowind is a crescent of land, with an oddly shaped island in the middle (although, its geography most likely changed with the Red Year...but thats a different story).

Hopefully this clarifies your questions :)

we do not know how bad skyrim was but it was not the worst (i think that was the summerset isles [correct me if im wrong]) or the best (arognia is the only nation to actually force the dremora to close the oblivion gates out of fear of being over-ran)

That was Vvardenfel the island in the center, mainland morrowind connects to cyrodil blackmarsh and skyrim.

I would have loved to see two or three ancient, ruined Oblivion Gates still in existence around Skyrim. I think it would have created a nice sense of continuity with the last game and, if done right, might have emphasized the passing of time (no longer bright red and black as in Oblivion, but now faded and weathered and cracked, ect).

Dagon wanted everything not just Cyrodiil. Skyrim was not hit hard from my understanding, I would have liked some evidence of the Oblivion crisis in Skyrim as it affected the entire empire.

Hordes of demons rauaging the holds. In the grand scheme of things, given Nordic history, it was your typical Skyrim Wednesday.

The Nords made the invading Dremora into their household pets I bet. Or just sent Giants after them, haha

Well, If they faired the worst, its only been 200 years. Why isnt Skyrim still feeling the effects?

I can't remember the details exactly but morrowind had several cities utterly destroyed and the nords couldn't adapt to fighting the deadra.

Hmm, Interesting. Would have been nice to see some ruins or something if this is true

Agreed some ruins or a few old oblivion gates would have been a nice touch.

Theres only like 2 Dremora in Skyrim (that I know of) which I find strange. Then again, I guess im just used to the thousands or so in Oblivion lol, but I didnt know anywhere but Cyrodill was touched by the crisis. Nor could I tell by just playing this game...interesting

Well, I guess they repaired the cities but all the Legion Forts were cut off and irreparably destroyed. That's why they're in ruins today.

You know how in Oblivion, where you closed the gates, it still left the supports of the gates and the surrounding area "daedric-fied"?

How come there is none of this to be found in Skyrim? Sure it has been 200 years but the only way to get rid of them would be to dig them up and throw them in the ocean. I would just leave them there if it were up to me...

Maybe they were destroyed and buried to be forgotten about - i mean its hardly a time of happyness..
After Dagon was destroyed, apparently a prophet in Oblivion mentioned "Dragons are awakening and returning to Skyrim" ... altho this is set 200years after,,, Skyrim hasn't had a easy time has it lol.

Its been 200 years, thats enough time to repair some structures, but there is literally 0 evidence of a Oblivion crisis anywhere in Skyrim, which I find hard to believe that they would have been gone in just 200 years. Even the Dwemer ruins from way back are still around in Skyrim, theres plenty of them in fact, so I think Bethesda missed that part by a long shot lol

I found it a major dissapointemt that there were no gates in Skyrim.
Seems Bethesda either forgot about it or didn't care to put them in, neither come up with an excuse.
Bethesda isn't those to really care about their established lore it seems to times. I think it's sad. I have only seen one place where they tell of what happened between Oblivion and Skyrim, and one place where they tell of the Crisis.
It's been two hundred years with lots of events. Umbriel is only referenced in one place, and that's supposed to be major and important.
I really doubt the Nords would do all the neccesary things to delete all existance of the Crisis.

It's dissapointing. But still a great game, but possibly the worst so far concerning earlier games and lore-wise.

I think Skyrim is amazing yeah, but I think it was made to suit "the average gamer" someone who just likes to play that one game and generally doesnt care about the series, Dont get me wrong, I love the game, but its like the other games never even happened.

Heeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllll-NO

You people are forgetting just how atrocious Oblivion was in the sense of worldbuilding and lore. How it ran roughshod over the rest of the series, pissing on the most important themes of Tamriellic history, religion, society, geography and myth.

Skyrim is far and away superior to Oblivion in all these ways, and as a self-professed Morrowhiner I am extremely happy with it. I agree that there is certain lack of historical continuity displayed in some quarters, but so what, really? They left out a couple ruined Oblivion gates, but they didn't need to be constantly referencing the events of two centuries past. You got a few jokes about calipers, and they focused on the actually significant events of the Great War.
