I don't use anything better than [Light] armor.
I don't use anything better than mid-tier weapons.
I don't use skill books.
I don't pick INT 10 and Comprehension.
I don't carrry more than 10 stimpacks.
I don't put points in the Repair skill nor do I pick Jury Rigging nor do I use the dispenser from DM.

Well, when I feel like being so, I use crap gear and weapons and see how far I can get. The regular 9mm pistol can take you far. I don't take damage Perks. I don't use VATS. (edit)My INT is always 5 these days. And of course, no companion. Having a companion is not hardcoe playing.
I'm not terribly into self-gimping in other ways tho...like weight carry. Not being able to pick up everything (or 50 trips to town) just drives me insane.

I was not aware that "hard core" (I guess also) meant to arbitrarily limit ones self during play.

I would consider myself hardcoe, but with me that manifests as wanting PA to be immune to small arms fire, and wanting the PC's skills to dictate success or failure in most interactions with people or objects.

I never did either, until recently when a lot of people would tell me I'm hardcoe because of the way I play. I see myself more as ... obsessive, task-oriented and stubborn.
I'm certainly not 'hardcoe' in terms of being uber-fast at killing bosses in 10 seconds using nothing but an icepick.

This is my take on it as well.

That said, I do have a set of rules I use in addition to playing with hardcoe mode enabled, which add a degree of challenge without necessarily 'gimping' myself (although I have a couple of characters who did that, too).

I don't really consciously gimp myself just for the intent of makin the game harder. I do end up gimping myself, but more for role-play reasons or to explore some builds that are explicitly different than the usual. I might play a spy that only carries concealable weapons, or a doctor that refuses to kill anything, or a lunatic with drug addictions or an intelligence challanged delusional. In keeping strictly to the role-play of some of these characters you end up with the same results: not taking advantage of all the available content that makes the game easier. Personally, I prefer this avenue to keep the challange in the game over simply setting a "no-do" list of non-character related restrictions.

Either way, or modding to add difficulty, is effective. It's just a matter of personal prefernce as to what you like/how you want to play the game. I suppose if you wanted an extreme challenge, you could run around in your underwear beating people with your fists. It wouldn't even be that hard to come up with a reasonable role-play scenario that would explain why your character acts this way. You did get shot in the head. Maybe you really are "nuttier than a bighorner dropping".

I hate gimping myself (and I hate even more if the game, by its incapabilities and balance mishaps, forces me to do so to find an enjoyable experience - because the experience isn't enjoyable anymore after that). Lotsa hate in me.

I usually only restrict myself from gear when I do role-playing stuff to. Most commonly a Sniper, wearin Veteran Ranger Armor, acceptable as they are snipers, One sniper rifle with 50 or less shots and 20 AP rounds. .45 auto pistol with 49 rounds, 5 stimpaks, 2 weapon repair kits, binoculars, and a couple other things. That is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Like others said, making yourself less combat effective isn't really what makes you "hardcoe". It's more about sticking to your character's style.

My standard character is a heavy weapons/energy heavy trooper BoS Paladin. I don't play hardcoe mode with this character because I like to carry a butt load of ammo....it doesn't make sense to me for a heavy trooper to be carrying only 700 rounds for his minigun....so I make him carry 7,000 rounds.

Also other things:

1. No companions for me because it makes the game much easier. I'll have Raul with full maintenaince sitting and waiting at the B.O.S. Safehouse, but only because I want his perk.

2. No Drugs. I hate getting addicted and my character is disciplined. I don't even allow addictive substances in my inventory. The Nuka Chemist perk is perfect for this kind of build...a Nuka Victory is like a super-healing ultra jet

MODS:

1. My power armor can withstand small arms fire with project nevada and powered power armor, but enemies with medium to high DT will be harder to kill as well since they receive the same benefits. But this makes me actually feel like I am wearing real power armor. Also it has probably costs be close to 100k in caps to upgrade my power armor to be what it is in lore, and if I push the power armor beyond its limits it will overheat and can kill me.

2. Adding a lot more enemies to the wasteland. A LOT. Running A World of Pain mod with High Increased Wasteland Spawn+Guards+Patrols+Civilians. On top of this, my character ends up being enemies with the NCR and Legion so all those added patrols will end up attacking me.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So no, I don't think being hardcoe is about taking away my tri-beam laser rifle or plasma caster or making my ammunition have weight when I am playing a heavy weapons character.

I call it roleplaying, not "gimping," which has a negative connotation. Gimping is a min-maxer term and we're not stuck with it.

My RPing includes light armor or clothing only, a maximum of two weapons and 7-8 mines/grenades on my person at any one time (although I have more stashed away), limiting ammo to reasonable amounts carried (normally under 150 rounds per weapon). I stopped taking Educated somewhere along the way and keep my Intelligence under 7. I stay away from energy weapons because, in my limited experience with them, they are insanely powerful.

Energy Weapons are only powerful if you take certain perks and make max-charged ammo. And there are penalties for that, creating max charged ammo degrades your weapon like crazy and requires a lot of ammo.

For example if I use a tri-beam laser rifle with max charged ammo: it uses 3 shots.....5 microfusion cells makes 2 max charged cells. So every time I take a shot with a Tri-Beam Laser Rifle I am using 7.5 microfusion cells per shot. Each microfusion cell is 3-5 caps depending on your barter. So you are spending anywhere from 22.5 caps per shot to 37.5 caps per shot. And if you don't have a good supply of weapon repair kits and/or Raul's perk that extra degradation is going to drive you crazy.

All my companions are always chill'n at the Lucky 38 at my expense

Completely agree, but since modding isn't available on the 360 there ain't much I can do for balance.
Either play as a god or play with balance, I go with balance, which locks me out of maybe 10% of the perks, 20% of the weapons and maybe 80% of the armors.
Yay for being locked out of game content! <_<

I just play Dead-is-dead.

Feels stupid to forcefully gimp myself by never throwing away the Varmint rifle or something, but treating a character as dead for good if it ever dies, yeah that keeps me on my toes no matter how good the character is.

I think the very basic aspects of hardcoe mode like sleep, hunger, and thirst should have been implemented as standard play in Fallout 3 and NV.

And then give you an expanded hardcoe option so then you can have things like rarer stimpacks, rarer high quality food, no instant stimpack healing, stimpacks can't heal limbs, ammunition has weight, stimpacks have weight, etc. etc., etc.

But everyone has there own way of making up their own difficulty through mods or RPing a certain way.

Yea. The difficultytoggle is - and should be - there for a reason. If the game needs to be accessible to people not interested in challenge, the toggle is there -- and to that direction it works (the game does get easier - to a ridiculous proportions even). How about making it work to the other direction too (and balance it accordilgly)?

Mainly mods that increase enemies and make them better equipped. You know, gives guns to gunslingers :lmao:

I don't "gimp", i build my character to what i need and do not not use any items or features and instead use mods to fix the balance.

Except skill books i never use. They're evil. Not as evil as bobbleheads, but close. I don't even pick up sell them like in Fallout 3. And after reaching level 30 i set the XP settings so high you need 1.000.000 points to level up. Levelcap increases are also evil :stare:

I really hope Bethesda invents a difficulty slider for Skyrim, but i doubt it :shakehead:
