Robes, just doesn't feel like a mage with armor on.

Is there any non-cosmetic or immersive reason why?

I use robes. I like to role-play and focus on Magicka Regeneration (even though it's so slow during combat).

Not having to bother with the (light/heavy) armor skill or perks. Can cut out smithing while your at it.

Robes and Mask if I intend to use no potions, but I like Ebony Armor because it looks cool.

Until your a high level or have a high enchanting skill, the enchantments on robes are usually much better. But I suppose that just covers the head+body pieces, I have played mages who wear gauntlets & armoured boots.

Depends on the character I'm RP'ing. Pure mage in robes, nothing with an armor rateing. But I also play a battlemage that wears heavy armor.

My pure mage will "perk" nothing but magic and alchemy. No smithing weapons.

My battemage will point points in distruction, conjuration, one in restoration, 2 or 3 in alteration, just the bottom of 1h and heavy armor. With points in smithing and enchanting.

I also play them differently my battlemage will summon ( a familar), throw some lightning bolts and run in swinging. My mage stay's as far away from enemies as he can, summoning a bound sword only if he can't run.

Light armor and or robes if a pure mage. Any kind of armor but mostly heavy if playing a battlemage.

A combination. Light imperial boots and hands, with a master robe. The 150% magic regen is handy.

My Battlemage wears Daedric armour enchanted with fortify destruction & magicka regen, but has forgone the all heavy bonus in favour of a circlet of peerless destruction. Her standing stone is the steed stone

My pure mage wears the party clothes which she saved from the Thalmor embassy quest and has dual enchanted with fortify destruction & magicka regen and fortify restoration & magicka regen. The circlet is dual enchanted with fortify alteration & fortify illusion

she has perks in mage armour & magic resistance, and uses wards a lot

I prefer cloth gear, cuz it feels right...
I could get the steed stone, allowing my mage stone to go away and letting me take it nice and slow, for those that don't know steed stone removes all weight influenced from your worn armor, meaning you'd be as free if not...freeer? with it, but it doesn't look nor feel right.

It depends on my character plain and simple, I have them wear what they as a character would want to dress in its not more complicated than that.

Depends on the PC

Redguard battlemage Dwemer armor most of the time

Altmer Pure mage. I try to wear Robes, but after awhile I get bored of it so I switch to Glass and Elven armor sometimes.

Nord Battle mage wears Steel plate

Dunmer Battle mage wears Ebony armor

Niamh is - I guess - a spellsword of sorts.
Currently she is wearing shock-resist boots and archery extra damage bracers. ;)

I have tried everything, settled on enchanted clothes, and a Forsworn headdress, just because my Altmer looks cool with that as a hairstyle. Looks and feel>>>efficiency and stats.

Robes ... Although I'm thinking of playing a character based on Oblivion's 'sorcerer' class - basically a Mage in heavy armor.

Robes. I'm 230 hours into my first and only playthrough as a pure mage, and I only wear robes. Sometimes nice casual clothing if I'm scrolling around town shopping or whatever.

I'm with the majority here - sympathyforsaren3 could have read my mind, that's exactly how I play my pure mage. Using the More & Better Robes mod (I think that's its name) I got the brown robes and green hood from Solitude, and enchanted them to provide the usual sort of boosts. I think they look great, SO much better than the ridiculous Arch-Mages's Robes, which are like some sort of Eskimo clown outfit. I still haven't found a decent pair of gloves, so I am bare-handed; I don't like the standard brown gloves, and although the Thalmor gloves do look good I won't wear them. I tried to convince myself they could be worn in defiance, as a trophy, but I just can't work that into my RP - my mage wouldn't do that.

I do wear the Merchant's Boots, though. They're nifty. An Arch-Mage has to show a little style.

There's no role playing reason mages can't where robes in the Elder Scrolls universe so those of you saying it isn't right for a mage to do so or it doesn't feel like a mage are under some preconceived notions from other RPG universes. Battlemages are a well established profession in the lore for the games in the series so I have no problem at all playing a mage that wears heavy armor. From a practical matter, there's no reason a mage would wear anything but the best protection they can and if they're moderately skilled (light) or highly skilled (heavy) in wearing armor they'd be crazy not to use it to remain alive in a hostile environment such as present day Skyrim.

Our pre-concieved notions are from playing the series. Look around most mages don't wear armor its one of the differences between battlemages and the pure magician. In Morrowind this was exemplified in the unarmored skill in the magic tier. Oblivion added spell effectiveness that penalized your magic for wearing armor. The very existance of the mage armor perks and all the mage robes in skyrim further exemplifies the roleplaying reasons for not wearing armor.
