Try going back to before you discovered the Vault and have your comapnions wait somewhere, it worked for me at the rocket plant..
that would involve reverting back over 4 hours of saves (and 3 character levels, and about 10 quests). after i left the vault, i had kept playing and did a lot of the run-around quests (mostly involving NCR rangers), and then tore through the repconn HQ and got everything it had to offer. i don't want to revert back that far only to discover they release a patch the next day that makes my saves usable again. instead, i gave up on new vegas until there's a new patch. the unfortunate thing is that i really really want to play new vegas; despite the freezes, i very much enjoyed the game. i know how to leapfrog my saves, and with a 250GB hard drive i had no problem creating a new save every time. i thought that would get me past all the crashing without frustration. however, if i can't even trust that my saves will load, the game is 100% unplayable in my opinion. i'm running out of my backlog of games to play in the meantime... i beat fable 3 and found almost all the collectibles, i bought army of two: the 40th day just to have a shooting game and my friend and i basically beat it in a single sitting...
IMHO what we need is some legitimate communication. i've been lurking these forums for a week hoping in vain that either (1) someone would post they found a fix for the save game bug, (2) a patch would be announced, or (3) that beth/obsidian would give some sort of explanation. i'm a software engineer, and i'm trying my best to understand this from the point of view of beth/obsidian, but they're making it pretty difficult. as much as i hate that games today are pushed out the door with problems because our consoles are internet-connected and they can just patch it, i can understand the complexity of all the code involved here and the reality that some bugs are going to escape QA. that's not an excuse to have game-breaking issues, but that's a discussion for another thread. but the most important thing is: when you release a product that is broken, you don't just hide. if i pushed out a release and there were this many bugs (especially of this severity!), there would be a series of communications. i would need to explain to a group of people what happened, and someone would be drafting a communication explaining what went wrong, what steps were being taken to make sure this didn't happen again in the future, and a plan and timeline for when we would have the issues fixed. where has that been?
the thing that's outraged me the most has been the way it seems they're trying to sweep this under the rug. the boards are literally riddled with threads being locked by moderators, some of which have been locked on very shaky grounds. the new vegas landing pages on both the bethesda and obsidian sites just talk about critical acclaim. the sticky posts at the top of the boards say little more than "Please continue, my good sir. we heard you, there's bugs, deal with it, we're working on stuff" (obviously i'm paraphrasing there). i'm not even sure there's been any sort of apology.
anyways, sorry for the rant.
EDIT: apparently the profanity filter changes acronym for S T F U to "Please continue, my good sir." i got a good laugh out of that. but then i remembered i'm getting more enjoyment out of army of two: the 40th day (i game i outright laughed at when it launched) than i am out of new vegas (a game i was waiting for anxiously). now i made myself sad.
