Really, that seems a bit excessive. I'd think anything over 20 uncrackable by brute force provided you utilized all character types (alphanumeric and punctuation).

I've got a couple of 1000 character passwords .

... I always find it funny that some of my weakest passwords (from a brute-force standpoint) are for my financial stuff, since those sites limit me to 20 characters :P

My bank has no such silly restrictions .

Mine is even worse, with a 12 character limit.

And that's still far from the worst out there, sadly enough.

Gods frakking damn it. I reset my passwords after the last one, and now I have to do it again?!

I really wish I could install a manager or use passwords with a bajillion letters, but the fact that I routinely log in from 3-5 computers means that I've got to have passwords I can remember. They're still some 15-20 letters, caps, numbers, and punctuation, but probably not as secure as a randomly generated 45-symbol string.

Any chance we'll get to know whether this is an issue with Beth's servers/code/etc, or if its an issue with Invision Pro Board?

Phew, crisis averted. I had forgotten the email I had registered this account with, but I managed to guess my way into it. Requested an email transfer so that doesn't happen again (Since I had stupidly used the email I want to be my new registered one for the temp account needed to PM GStaff).

svcks that the avatars are gone for the time being. I feel strangely naked without it. Poor Rarity.

I honestly have no idea what my old email address is, nor do I know what my password is (I have it written down, locked in a safe :P), but thank Jove for Facebook Connect. It's how I've managed to log in for the past several months.

Have you considered https://lastpass.com/? From the sounds of things, it would suit you fairly well.

MY ADVICE:

With these attacks happening more often and not just here. I would advise everyone to make up different passwords for all accounts, i.e. never use the same password twice. I've always done this, so when something like this happens I only have to worry about the account affected.

Hacking is likely to get more frequent in the future.

Yep. I downloaded KeePass today for just this reason.

It's not only rogue hackers, even states are involved. I recently heard that North Korea hacked into South Korean gamer accounts and China, Russia are all linked to hacking and I bet it's not just government sites either. I wouldn't be surprised if they sometimes hit comercial targets just for practice and training purposes.

Luckily the password I used on this site had no relation to any other account or password I use, but I think I'll beef up on security either way. I'm with Ultum on this one. Better to spend some time making sure your passwords are all secure rather than having to worry later.

I'll just have to convince the admins to give me a real "Monkey Assassin" badge :P

how hard can it be?

I could go either way. On one hand, they already have a hitman (Attrebus), but on the other, they don't have a monkey assassin, and I get the impression Attrebus is busier than he used to be .

They used to have one, but they thought he was too http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/funny-pictures-hitman-monkey-drowns-boy.jpg?w=422&h=495.
