Frame rate drops hard when closing to NPCs

Hi Guys

When I don't use d3d9.dll, I get very hard frame rate drop every time I close to NPC groups (like town or powder gangers camp). I don't mean stuttering but normal frame rate drop.
I have E8400, gtx260, 4gb ram and running on Vista 64bit. Know lads that run this game smoothly on the similar rig, but on Windows 7 so I don't think this frame drop should be common thing on gtx260. Do you think it could be Vista 64 or some particular thing on my system (I got newest nvidia drivers yesterday)

Anyone else has similar problem?

This is why we use the D3D9 dll in the first place :)

Ok, but is this gtx260 problem or Vista problem. Like I said, two of my colleagues run the game on gtx260 as well (but on Win7 64) and don't have this issue

Yep, I downloaded it and installed yesterday. However, had exactly same frame drops (in exactly same locations in the game) also before installing 260.99

Besides... you sound like you are sure these two guys are lying to me about frame drops and fact that they don't use d3d9.dll :)

Just to repeat... I mean really hard frame drops, to 10-15 fps (latest example, power gangers camp north, with I guess 4 NPCs)

It's a Vista/W7 DX10/11 issue. XP does not suffer the same issue as it uses the proper rendering by default. (No DX10/11 compatibility.)

Yep, I downloaded it and installed yesterday. However, had exactly same frame drops (in exactly same locations in the game) also before installing 260.99

Besides... you sound like you are sure these two guys are lying to me about frame drops and fact that they don't use d3d9.dll :)

Just to repeat... I mean really hard frame drops, to 10-15 fps (latest example, power gangers camp north, with I guess 4 NPCs)



I'm not saying that their lying, my game runs quite fine without the d3d9.dll but I can still see a minimal difference. Have you tryed running EVGA Precision or something similar to get an overview of how much stress is on your card?

Have you installed other game "fixes" like http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35262 or something else.

EDIT

Does your friends have ffdshow? you might want to make an exception in it or remove it.

I don't know if it will make the difference but you should check if there are any sound driver updates.

1) Checked with EVGA Precision... GPU usage goes up to 50-60% and stays there pretty much all the time, even when visiting multiple NPCs locations and experiencing frame drop
2) Tried 'the fix' you linked to... cannot see much of a difference
3) What do you mean exactly with exception in fddshow? How can I do it? I have Klite codec pack installed on my machine, and that includes fddshow (it's not running in the background tho)

Will check for board/audio driver updates but, frankly, I don't put to much of a hope into audio drivers

The Gamebryo is famous for causing crashes and lags when multiple soundcards are present, audio drivers are just as essential as graphical drivers and may help reduce lag.

Most codec packs are added directly to the windows codecs and since games just grab whatever codec is present there it may cause instability to have something like fddshow. I would recommend that you simply uninstall the other codec packs to start with, if it doesn't help then feel free to re-install them. I can't remember exactly what you would have to do to make an exception in fddshow so I really don't want to try, you would however be able to find a guide somewhere.

I know this is a really stupid question, but you did place the d3d9.dll in the (main folder) steamapps -> common -> fallout new vegas?

Yes it tricks the game into thinking that you have an old 7900gt card (I think thats the one) which is only capable of running dx9

Copy/Pasted from and old Fallout 3 post online:

1. Launch the ffdshow video decoder configuration window. You may access this through the start menu. If you have installed any codec packs, check the start menu entries of those. If you can't find it on the start menu, right click the ffdshow video decoder (red) icon that appears on the taskbar when a supported video file is playing, and select ffdshow video decoder option from the menu. ffdshow_icon

2. Tick the Dont use ffdshow in. checkbox if not already checked.

3. Press the edit button that is next to the text field. A new dialog box will pop up. Press the Add button. Then Add incompatible executable file dialog box will be displayed. Browse to the Fallout 3 installation directory and locate fallout3.exe file. Select it and press open. Close all dialog boxes currently open by pressing ok.
(OR you can simply type fallout3.exe at the end of the text field next to. Dont use ffdshow in checkbox)

4. Repeat steps 2-3 in ffdshow audio decoder configuration (the blue icon in taskbar) window as well. It is important that you add fallout3.exe to both ffdshow audio and video decoder's expections list.

Of course :) However, I'm talking about running a game without d3d9.dll. This dll helps a lot and it fixes frame drops but I was wondering what's the cause for frame drops on vanilla config

I installed new audio drivers and added exception to ffdshow.. it seems it helped a bit, but still can experience significant frame drop

Just wondering... is d3d9.dll limiting the max graphics looks in any way? Or is it exactly the same look as on vanilla?

You could try and lower water and shadow details.

Just wondering... is d3d9.dll limiting the max graphics looks in any way? Or is it exactly the same look as on vanilla?

Some people say that lights and faces look different without the d3d9.dll, it might be that some things are rendered with dx11. Using the d3d9.dll tricks the game to run only with dx9.

I have windows XP SP3 with a Nividia 250 1 GB and the 260.99 drivers and the game is unplayable without the .dll work around.

Now how about an official fix for this problem, as well as the remaining scripting and *clipping issues.


* I just love the fact that your character and encounters frequently get stuck in the ground.
