Freaking Deathclaws

Post » Tue Feb 22, 2011 12:34 am

I'm currently svck in the storyline, I really want to help the Great Khans, but one of the peeps is at the very end of Quarry Junction. Try as I might, I can't sneak or fight my way though. Rex and Boone die instantly from a single Deathclaw attack and I have to hop around downing drinks and Stimpacks to stay alive, before eventually dying.

I've tried Flamer, Rifle and even Dynamite against them! Nothing seems to work! Its quite easy with Boone's and Rex's help against 1 but no matter which way you go in the quarry, you end up getting piled.

Whats the best way to kill or sneak around the Deathclaws?

I need to help the Great Khans (didnt do it last time) so dont even think about suggesting I not do it!

Best way (still tricky, but not quite as bad) is to not take the "Hi Diddle Diddle, Straight Up The Middle" path through the quarry. ;)

Locate Vault 19. Come out of its parking lot, take a right up the road, take the first "pathway" to the left. (Easily spotted as there's usually a Deathclaw of some stripe pacing around it just off the paved roadway)

Cautiously advance up that path, you still have to cross a field of Deathclaws but in my experience they're not as..."tightly packed in" as the ones in the quarry, and there's a path through the back wall of the quarry to the Khan encampment you're trying to reach. Said encampment also makes a nice perch to clear the quarry itself from later.

Yep, you have to go in the back way from the North, which you can also get to from the Yangtze Memorial (Goodsprings Source) but you will have to scramble around to the North and go East to find the opening. It is easier to find from Vault 19 though, but you will have a couple of deathclaws to avoid.

You might try telling Rex and Boone to wait and use a Stealthboy to get up there.

I do think they put those Khans in just about the most difficult place for a low level character to get to, and this is a quest you usually do at lower levels.

Or you could try sneak attacks with gausse rifles or an anti materiel rifle, and take the path on the right and snipe from a distance

I'll try this mysterious entry into the quarry then. Thanks for your help guys! I think i've got some stealth boys spare.

By the way, I'm not that low level, i'm level 18 i think, but my character isnt really designed for combat (100 sneak, 100 barter, 100 speech, problem Legate? <20 combats). Also I svck at games in general.

If you chose Wild Wasteland trait, the alien blaster is very effective against a deathclaw.

Anti-Material rifle is good for sneak attacks, and same with the Gauss Rifle.

I managed to get to the Khans through the back entrance!!! ran into 2 Deathclaws but they were far away and didnt even realize I was shooting them until they were half dead! Thanks all!

On a completely unrelated note, I now have a Gauss Rifle which is "good for sneak attacks" so maybe I'll return to the quarry and enter it like a man and kill everything! :gun:

Jump on a structure or crane. They can't reach you there. I then take them out with a 10mm pistol.

From the main entrance road on the east, hug the high cliff on the south wall all the way to the end and when no deathclaw is looking, run up the tower and jump on the rail. They can't touch you there. Pick them off, which will take a long time and lots of ammo. When most of them are gone, switch to lower on the rail or the dumpster. When you can't see anymore, jump down and run to the tower at the southwest and climb on a girder. No one can touch you there and you can pick off the rest of them. Remember ... lots of ammo. Result ... an empty quarry. Then wander around and pick up the good treasures there around the ponds.

Almost any weapon in the game can kill a deathclaw. I've brought one down to 20% health with a sneak attack headshot from a cowboy repeater with .38 special ammo

Although it did take about 8 more regular heashots to finish it off.
These are the tough Quarry Deathclaws BTW.

I've found that bottlecap mines are very effective against them.

This is pretty much what I did. I had Arcade and EDE, and my AMR with incendiary rounds and hollow points. I sneaked in the quarry, then ran up that crane or whatever it is. Arcade and EDE followed and we sniped the deathclaws until they were all dead.

i dunno if it was just me but
ballistic fist / displacer glove worked wonders, i was 2 hitting them (normal diff)
i had 15 meele and unarmed so if it was better it would have been easier. I obtained from the legions elite bodygaurds of caeser and him himself
if not just alien blaster them.

Just you. That low unarmed against deathclaws on anything higher than easy would be a slaughter. It would take wayy more than two hits...

Best bet is a powerful weapon. If dynamite's your strongest thing, you're in trouble. Fire is effective but slow, incinerators + a high position = fried deathclaw, but it takes time, decent aim, ammo and a lot of time setting up (at level 12 I cleared deathclaw promontory with a heavy incinerator and unfair usage of a difficult to reach point).
Brush gun is very effective, I recently killed all the deathclaws in quarry junction by sneak critting them with my hunting rifle, then switching to brush gun when they got close (I play on hard/very hard dependent on character, this guy gets very hard).

Top end weaponry is almost essential. At higher difficulties, without using terrain, it is essential. Crippling their legs is also an option, numerate mines are effective, but they're still pretty nifty IIRC.

first of all you need some long range firepower, hunting rifle with scope, sniper rifle with scope, gauss rifle, etc. stay on the rocks or as you move into the quarry, get up on those big conveyer belt things but you need to take your time and deal with the deathclaws as much as possible from long range, if you do have to shoot em up close, a riot shotgun or even better, the multiplas rifle, give one to boone also he'll use it, just don't give em ammo till you're in the quarry, also you shouldn't really do this at all until you're well armed and leveled up a bit, cause there's a lot of deathclaws there, also use psycho, med x, jet etc, all that stuff helps.
