What nobody has mentioned is that you can return to areas that you have previously visited to find them repopulated and not just because another mission has sent you there.
So yes each mission is rather linear, and the main storyline is linear, but way more than half the game is optional. You can go through the game doing what you are told, the moment you are told to do it, or you can go do whatever you feel like. You can go back into areas of the game you think you have already completed to find more stuff to fight.
Those who do the main storyline the moment each mission is presented to them will probably find the game to be a horribly linear experience. For those who are willing to get out there and explore they will find a unique experience that is very different to the experience others will have had.
As an example, try going back to Dead City after you have completed the first mission there, but before you get the second mission to go back. You will find it a totally different experience. The same goes for many areas in the game.
Still, as others have stated it's not as open world as a game like Fallout or Oblivion, but the fps action is head and shoulders above either of those games. Rage is a first person shooter first and foremost and id do that better than anyone.
