Issue: At seemingly random intervals the game would freeze, the screen would go all white and the only way I could get out was to ctrl-alt-del and kill the process.
Solution: Disable Steam Cloud synchronization …
In your game Library, right click on Skyrim, Properties, Updates, uncheck Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization …
History: Was away from the game for a little while and there were a few updates since I played last, also bought a new rig to run it on higher settings. Reinstalled, let Steam patch, auto detected settings, and got playing. The game, at seemingly random intervals would freeze, the screen would go white and as mentioned, I could only get out by ctrl-alt-del and killing the process.
After trying a wide array of graphic settings and drivers I was almost ready to give up when I started poking around the Steam settings. I do not remember the Steam Cloud Sync button, but I may have just missed it before.
I did a search on the forums and there are many references to it, my apologies for not reading them all to see if this came up and is now ‘common knowledge’.
