Freshly upgraded PC, Artifacts, Black Screens, and White scr

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 11:31 am

Hello all,
I have been playing Skyrim since it came out, and I've been using my 4-5 year old PC to play it. (OC'd the PC to its ragged edge) Have been playing with my settings on Medium, and have been playing decently. But for Christmas my Wife got me a Gift-card to Fry's and I got a new Mobo, and Processor, ram, Etc etc. Upgraded my beaten to death PC. Figured I'd go play some Skyrim, and see how much better things would be. Well, I boot up, and notice right off the bat, I'm having INSANE amounts of Artifacts now. I never had a graphical issue, sure the occasional crash, or error in the back ground, but nothing this heinous. Also, during dialog with some characters (beginning of the Dark Brotherhood stuff in the Shack) The screen will go black in between dialog parts almost. Like the character finishes her lines, then the screen flashes black for a few seconds (about 4) and then goes back to the games, and she says her next sentence.

I am looking into upgrading my Video card soon, (looking at a 450 or a 550) and hopefully that's the error.
Also, here's my DXDiag just encase someone wanted to check my specs....

Also, I tried reformatting my HDD and doing a fresh install of everything, thinking that would help, it didn't.
I now no longer can get Nexus Mod Manager to work with Skyrim, it's like it can't see it or something. It crashes every time I try to tell it where the folder is for Skyrim.

Thank you.

How did you backup your saves, and then copy them back over?

Also, are you using the very latest beta graphics driver?

Run Furmark and check if your GPU is dying. Running another game may not help here.

A word of warning: When artifacts started appearing i ran the furmark benchtest, and it fried my card. Do it with caution.

Edit: If you overclocked your GPU try underclocking it or returning it to the proper clock and see if you're artifacting.

I was running the non-beta nvidia drivers, then started having this issue, and downloaded and installed the beta ones, no real improvement has been noticed. For someone reason I'm thinking its my Video card thats starting to take a dive. Its a couple years old, and a cheap model.

The saves are in: C:\Users\(Your pc name)\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves
I just stuck them all on a thumb drive, along with all my work stuff, and transferred them over.

Ok so you didn't back up all the ini files etc?

Dayer is right in that if you're having iffy things with the game like that, your GPU could be on it's way out.

The only thing I can think of if your GPU is fine, is deleting your ini files Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini in C:\Users\(Your pc name)\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\, and also the Renderer text file. Then launch the game, let it scan your hardware, and go with whatever settings it picks.

I'm really hoping it's the GPU, I'm installing the Nvidia system tools, and going to confirm where the clock is on the card. If that doesn't work, I got an old 8800 here, that imma pop in and see whats up with it....

Quick update, I installed system tools, took the Card back to stock clock, and started Skyrim on LOW setting, and it appears to be running fine. Looks like dooky, but runs fine.
This is telling me it had to have been the GPU and the whole upgrading part was just a coincidence no?

what is your power supplie ,it is just important to upgrade that as well as the other things ,if you upgraded the processor and ram and mobo they may be taking more power from the psu , are you able to give full specs of your computer ?

Check the link I posted in the first post.
I have a 1000W PSU. Never had a power problem.

Sounds like your GPU is dying, like mine did (i had an 8800 GTS or something similar to that ~). Personally, mine artifacted every time temperature was higher than 70. You can check your temp in game and see if it starts doing it after a certain temperature. I advise you to buy the new GPU soon if thats the case, lest it burn anything else in your computer (probably won't happen).

Yup, deff GPU, I dropped setting down to bare minimum/lowwest settings, and after about 30-45 min, It started to artifact, then crashed about 15 later. Displayed a Nvidia error, in the bottom right corner.
So im thinking of going out and buying a 6870, Unless someone can tell me of a better Bang for buck deal for $140ish.

Does the game artifact on stock clocks etc? Or only when you overclock it? It sounds like a bad oc to me. If your oc worked fine on your old system there's no guarantee it would with the upgrade. Also make sure the cards seated firmly and doesn't have any loose connections etc.

I'd recommend running benchmarks regardless after an upgrade just to make sure everything's up to par. Compare your pc to similar ones nd make sure it's in the right ball park.

You've obviously [censored] it up, either go to a proper place for someone to install your parts right or get some good parts that go good together.

I have the 6870, XFX one and can not fault it. Aside from sometimes chugging with full ultra DX11 @ 1080p crysis 2 it's a fantastic card.

I can max almost every game with at least 4 x AA and 16 x AF @1080p with vsync @ 60fps.

The only exceptions are battlefield 3 (runs on ultra, but get 60+fps with mix of medium and high) crysis 2 dx11 maxed, and just cause 2 (stays above 50fps, so no vsync).
