Most of my group are BF3 addicts and wouldn't go near this. They do all say it looks and sounds great but they all hate RPG. A few people in work play it. Not come across a female who plays this though.

Oh, we're out there. :wavey:

I've met people like that, who just aren't willing to invest themselves in something without tangible and immediate rewards. As a COD fan I take offense at the implication that I have a superficial mentality and or the attention span of a flea.

Skyrim is NOT the game you want to watch newbies play. You'll cringe and want to correct them every 20 seconds. It's agonizing.

This game is so casual that it's hard for me to comprehend someone who is not able to play this, or even master it.

This is so true. I was watching my husband play Skyrim and I kept wanting to tell him things. I really had to step back and let him explore and learn to love the game for himself. He generally prefers FPS games and Skyrim requires quite a learning curve. I've been a fan since Morrowind, prefer RPGs in general and don't enjoy FPS games as much. We're different in our tastes but there is room for both types of games in our home.

My coworker has been listening to me talk about FO3, FO:NV and now Skyrim. So this morning he tells me that he bought Skyrim for his brother-in-law. When I asked him if his brother-in-law plays RPGs he answered, "Not particularly. He probably won't play it." When I asked why he would buy a game that he doesn't think that his brother -in-law will probably not play his answer was, "It's one less Christmas present I had to buy and when he says he doesn't like it he'll give it back to me and I can play it."

I stood there with a dumbfounded look and said, "But you only play sports games once in a blue moon. However do you know you are even gonna like it?"

"I don't. But you seem to like all these RPG games and I want to see what they are about. I might actually like it."

I kind of want him to like it. It might keep out of trouble. If he isn't out drinking everynight he's out being robbed by hokers or getting arrested for stupid ish.
your co-worker is beyond shallow... the spirit of Christmas is completely lost on this one.

Yes a lot of people don't "get it"

Can't really say anything else except that everyone is different and likes different things. It's tough not to be frustrated that other people don't share your point of view, but if you think about it, it's a pretty unreasonable expectation.

TES games are not for everyone.

I left WoW after 5 years, and left a friend behind who is normally logged on for 10 or more hours per day, and most of the time she sits in one of the big cities and talks in chat. She's kind of addicted. She would not be able to play Sky because there's no one to talk to.

I think with the younger generation of players, it's something similar. The rush of wargames/shooters, and pushing and pushing on to the next objective is also addictive, and for them to slow down and play a TES game is probably not going to work because the action is not there. A lot of our action is self-generated, solo play.

I myself played FPS since way back when id first came out with Wolfenstein and could not think of anything else I'd wanted to play - till I fell in love with D1, D2/LOD, etc., and from there to similar games and then to Bioware, Bethesda, then to WoW/Rift.

I love TES games, and do miss other players not being on-line playing with me, but I started with Morrowind, and was ready for a change from WoW/Rift to Sky.

But even in WoW there were a lot of players that leveled to the level cap 85 in maybe 9-11 days, and then complained in the forums how there was nothing to do. And I saw those same players in Rift, getting to 50 in less than a week and had the same complaint.

Always looking for something - satisfaction or whatever, but never finding it.

Honestly, the game is still extremely complex and deep, and people who have not played this style of game in the past can possibly become completely overwhelmed by it. My cousin is this way. He's fairly intelligent for his age (16 years old), but he plays mostly FPS games like COD. He shows interest in the few times he has actually seen me play the game, but he doesn't really understand what is going on. He said he played Oblivion some but all he did was kill things. Some people are just not built for something like the TES series.

And frankly, I'm tired of people saying Skyrim is "dumbed down". Skyrim is still incredibly complex, even without things like spellmaking, etc. It's a very deep and engrossing game, and completely immersive. It's great for people who don't mind the slow style of playing where you search every nook and cranny, etc, and it actually rewards those types of players. But the game is definitely not dumb. Far from it.

I really think the reason that Skyrim got so much hate was because there were so many people who bought it because TES gets more popular with every release and there was so much hype. I think a lot of MW3ers(which I enjoy as well) bought this game not really knowing what went into it and what it was about and they came away disappointed.

To OP. You sound on the younger spectrum of TES gamers(just a guess). I would take it as a huge compliment that my friends didn't get TES games. I think it takes more thinking than your average video game and more mature gamers appreciate it.

Think of it this way: MW3 is to Arbor Mist as Skyrim is a fine vintage Merlot? Maybe a bad anology, but the best I can do.

The less an individual actually games, the more likely that they have their mindset for a particular genre of games.

It's not bad that someone won't play or enjoy Skyrim if, say, they only play shooters or fighting, or sports games; especially when it's not their main or a major hobby of theirs. I know that I play every game that everyone I know plays, and even more that they've never heard of.

However, what is annoying is when a person who does enjoy RPGs won't attempt to try Skyrim for some reason and just make up reasons for why they don't want to play it (friend of mine can't handle anything different than what he's used to.)

ha ha ha. im STILL trying to get people i know to play deus ex 1. its the same with skyrim, as long as they have at least an average IQ and can get out of the mindset that they wont like it then they will surely enjoy it, but they refuse, and no amount of simplified gameplay will attract them bethesda! games have only been around a few decades. what did people have before? they couldnt enter a whole other world and do as they see fit. home entertainment was nearly non-existent 100 years back. VID GAMES FTW!

That's odd, I find it to be the opposite, at least in my case. The more games I play, the better I understand the type of games I like, and end up only purchasing those types of games. When I was a much younger gamer, I was a lot more open minded and would buy all variety of different types of games, just to experience something new. As an older gamer I enjoy in general replicating a select few types of games. Rpgs/post apocalyptic games/shooters

does anyone else have friends (or acquaintances, co-workers etc...) who just do not understand the game? Most of my friends either cannot complete anything more than a simple quest because they have no patience to listen to anybody or boast that they got to level 81 in three days or whatever and act like they've "won" something. It personally drives me crazy. When i watc them play I want to rip my hair out.

I understand people are not used too these kinds of games. I remember first playing Morrowind. I think my first fifty or so hours were long pointless wanderings or questing without any idea of what was going on. So I can sympathize with new players because we've all been there. What i have a hard time tolerating is otherwise intelligent people incapable of participating in a world specifically designed to be like reality (to a degree) after hours of gameplay.

As an addendum, id like to say that after 100 hours of play you should not be able to say a game is horrible. It makes no sense. You can get that opinion after ten. Dont come to me with a level 81 character thats beaten every questline and say you did not enjoy it. You clearly have a problem.

Thank you those of you who have read this for allowing me to get this off my chest.

Well my wife is the same.. lol
She knows that the only thing i played since the 90's the Elder Scrolls game's.. And litterly don't see why am enjoying just walking a road back and forth :P

Skyrim is my first Elder Scrolls game and I am MADLY IN LOVE.
I am so absorbed/excited that it's probably unhealthy. I watch the original trailer at least twice a day and get goosebumps every time.
And when I'm not playing, I'm watching Skyrim youtube videos, reading Skyrim forums, or giving endless monologues about Skyrim to people who don't give a [censored] about Skyrim ("...so you wouldn't believe what happened north of Windhelm the other day...")

The closest thing to an RPG I've played is Pokemon, and the bulk of my gaming hours were playing sports games. I love sports, sue me.
In fact, an argument could be made that sports games are the ultimate RPG (the best reality TV show too)
I've read a lot of threads, and there seems to be a mentality that people who enjoy sports games, by default, are not wired to enjoy a game as complex as The Elder Scrolls.
I gotta tell you guys, I love Madden/MLB/NBA with all my heart, but nothing comes CLOSE to being as incredible and enjoyable as this game, and the world within it.

As for the topic at hand, most of my friends can't grasp or appreciate this game. They can't wrap their heads around it. In fact, of all the people I've met in 22 years of life, only three friends come to mind who would appreciate/understand the awesomeness of Skyrim. I am living proof that sports gamers can enjoy RPG's, but I also think that for one to fully enjoy Elder Scrolls, they must first possess the right combination of creativity, intelligence, and imagination.

There are a host of complaints that this game is "dumbed down" for mass consumption. I disagree.
Coors Light, Fritos and Two and a Half Men are things dumbed down for mass consumption. Skyrim is the drink of a fine connoisseur. Maybe it doesn't have the complexity of an aged whiskey (Morrowind) but it's one damn good drink.
Of course, if I drank half as much as I play Skyrim, I would have died weeks ago.
