Game crashes when combat starts

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:59 am

Hello, I am 60+ hours into the game and have had no major problems up till now. Whenever combat is initiated, the game crashes to desktop for no apparent reason. This started happening at Black Mountain while I was fighting the mutants and has been consistent everywhere I go in the game. Anyone else experiencing similar problems? Thanks.

My system specs:
Windows XP 32-bit
Nvidia GeForce 7900 GTX
Pentium Dual Core E5200 @ 2.5 GHz
2 GB DDR2 RAM

Hi,

I am having exactly the same problem. I am currently 63 hours into the game and while fighting the super mutants at black mountain have started to get crashes every time i play the game. Normaly after only a few seconds of combat starting. The game crashes to desktop every time. After this point i get the issue at any other location in the game.

Would love to hear from anyone with a solution! :)

Playing this on a Dell XPS M1530
Windows Vista 32bit Service Pack 2
nvidia 8600M GT
intel core 2 duo T6400 @2GHZ
3GB RAM

Still having this issue so have transferred the game and my saves to a different computer. Still getting the same crashes when combat starts.

moved to computer of the following spec

AMD Athlon Dual core 6000+ 3GHz
2Gb RAM DDR2
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit Service Pack 2
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT driver version 8.17.12.5896

Remedies tried:

Gone back to stable save game, deleted later save games.
Tried following different mission
tried different weapons.
moved to different computer
reinstalled game
reverified game
tried fast travelling to different location

Always as soon as combat commences game crashes to desktop. This happens even if its only boon or rex which attack on my behalf.

My problem was similar, I had 30 flawles hours into the game and then boom... crash city population... me. For me no particular area in the game seemed to cause this, it just happened. I did these two things and it brought my game back to life and I hope it helps you.

First put the game into XP Service Pack 3 Compatibilty Mode

64bit file path

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas

32bit file path (Almost the same)

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas

Right click the FaloutNV.exe application file and then click on the "Compatibilty" tab.
check the box lable "Run this program in compatibilty mode for: (from the drop down menu choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3)

I got that idea from this website:

http://www.atmaxplorer.com/2010/10/howto-fix-fallout-new-vegas-crashes-audio-issues/

The second thing I recommend is to use this GeForce tweak guide to setup your GPU for New Vegas.

http://www.geforce.com/#/Optimize/Guides/new-vegas-tweak-guide

I download the free Frames Per Second app as per the tweak guide instructions and loaded it up so I could see what was causing a dip in my frames per second. You have to keep the frames per second above 25-30 FPS so engage in the actions that cause the shut down and think about what could cause the frame rate to dip.

Did a diaolog sesssion (or VATS) cause the crash? -- ( the "Depth of Field" may needed to be turned off)
When my character walks diagonally does it freeze? -- ( the "Anisotropic filtering" may need to be adjusted)
Or maybe it's when my character is trying to look at objects in the distance? -- ( the "Object Fade or "Actor Fade" may need to be adjusted)

All of these settings are changed in the "New Vegas Options" menu at the launch screen so non GeForce user can also benefit from the tweak guide tips. I hope it helps you as much as it helpd me.

I really appreciate your response. I will try these fixes now. However, I did play flawlessly for 63 hours and enjoyed the game. Until I got to the same point the original poster did and then experience the same bug, initially in the same location at a similar number of hours of gameplay. My gut tells me this is a bug.

I will report back after using your suggested fixes to say if it has helped or not.

Thanks again!

I've gotten a similar-ish problem too, might be the same, but in my case the game CTDs when hidden status goes from hidden to caution. This only happened in Lucky38 and one section of the Hoover Dam battle (Legion version).

I have been experimenting with fraps and my frame rates peak at about 63, average about 45-55 and dip as low as 35 at peak load.

I have found one SOLUTION to my CTD's.

My problem always started when combat commenced. I studied the combat and the crash always occurred when boon opened fire in combat. I have subsequently left both rex and boon at the lucky 38 when i exited and now when i combat i dont crash. Naturally it svcks to have to leave both your companions when you really need them but it has allowed me to progress in the game. I will try picking up one of the companions, ie rex and try black mountain again and see if it crashes. if not will try again with boon and not rex and then last of all both companions again and see if the problem reproduces. will post back here soon.

Yeah your problem sounds like a bug. I love New Vegas but man is it buggy.

Just in case, check if you have enough free space on your drives, it crashes on me when I'm low on space. Other things that have caused my Fallout crashes in the past have been: gpu overheating because my office was too hot and audio probs.

I used to get crashes when new sounds would load (or thats what I believed). It happened when battles would start or an enemy would yell when they first saw me. I recall fixing it by switching out codecs. I believe I removed a few codecs and replaced them with the madfilter codec and removed the infamous ffdshow one too.

How do I set the game to run in compatibility mode for XP SP3? The only options are for 95/98/2000/NT. Tweaked some of the settings but it does not seem to be any particular action other than combat initiation that is causing this.

I having this problem since today. When my companion fires the shotgun the game crashes. It doesn't matter if it's inside or outside and only the most recent saves are affected.

The changes that I remember making to my system between when it worked and when it didn't were: I update my Xonar's drivers, Steam downloaded the new FO:NV patch and I move my SysWOW64 to another drive. I assume it was related to updating my sound drivers because I reverted the patches changes and the problem persists.

I see the problem is happening with the sound. As soon as my companion fires the shotgun, it crashes. The crash dump shows a sound thread handling the sound and then locking up. I'm probably going to play from an earlier save but I'll try to removing all my companion's weapons first and storing them somewhere to see how that affects it.

/me slaps his forehead. You are using XP already so you don't need to run in XP compatibility mode.

Removing my companion's weapons then giving them back doesn't stop the combat crashing. If I use their weapon it doesn't crash so it's only my companion and certain weapons.

If I remove my companion's weapons then it stops crashing (my companion uses their default weapon)

If I remove my companion's weapons, ammo and armor and then giving it all back, it stops the crashing.

I don't know if ammo affects which sounds play but I'm wondering if it's ammo related.

If your combat is crashing because of your companion and removing their weapons doesn't fix it then consider replacing that companion with another companion.

hello everybody.
I can confirm it's sound-related. And absolutely random. FNV crashes even when there are no companions around. Randomly, both in VATS and regular modes, simultaneously with pulling a trigger. Sometimes instead of CTD this bug causes reboot. Most annoying thing is that's the only bug I ever had with FNV.

my PC config (I know it's hard to say that it fits even minimal requirements but FNV runs at this at max settings as Oblivion and F3 did):
Intel P4A (09h) 1.8 GHz
1 x 512 Mb PC3200 (Apacer Tech) + 1 x 512 Mb PC3200 (KingMax)
MSI 865P Neo
Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 AGP
C-Media CMI8738
Windows XP Professional SP3

Used DX10 for XP by KM-Software,
ffdshow codecs are disabled for FalloutNV.exe,
FalloutNV.exe's compatibility has been set to 'Windows98/ME' to fix audio stutter issue.
