GAME CRASHES WHEN I LEVEL UP!

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:23 am

I have already played through the game once. It didn't work well. It frooze, were laggy, and I encountered loads of bugs and glitches aswell.
However, I could at least play it wich i cannot do anymore.

I recently started to play the game from scratch. Everytime I reach level 1 the game crash - instantly.I reininstalled it. Verified the game's cache in steam. Inactivated all mods. Set all settings to the lowest possible. Did three diffrent characters. Turned hardcoe mode off. Nothing of this works.

It's the same thing everytime - the game crashes instantly when I level up. This means that it's not possible to me to go further than level zero.

This is terrible..I bought this game and I can't even play it. :(

If the only reason you visited the forum was to rant about the bad game, you are in the wrong place. This is where Gamer Self-Help subjects are dealt with, however, you chose not to provide any useful information, and that isn't going to get you any useful answers.

Do you mean that I shouldn't complain about what's wrong? I bought the game. For money. And I cannot play it.
And I believe that the official forums is the best place to go if I wan't any feedback about my problem with the game.

Inactivated all mods.

Remove all mod files from any directories they're in, too, and see if that helps? Just unchecking them them doesn't always=no effect, I've found, if there's more than just an .esp file to the mod - uninstalling the game using the uninstaller doesn't remove those files, either.
Have you downloaded the latest NVSE, if you use it, since patch 1.3?

Well, I'll try to remove the mods then. I have never heard about NVSE - tell me about it.

EDIT: I removed all of the mods but the game frooze anyway.

What really is weird is that I've played through the whole game once without any serious problems.
I noticed this bug, or whatever it is, recently wich makes the game crash instantly when I level up.

It's pretty poor system nowdays, yes, and the version of windows 7 has expired, but it is good enough to run fallout new vegas smooth on the highest settings.
So I doubt there's need for updates in order to run the game. Especially since I never have experienced this level-up freeze before.

NVSE is an extra-scripting program that some more complex mods use. If you've never heard of it, chances are none of your mods require it. :)

Don't know when you played the game that had 'no problems', but it's always possible that something in the new patch is causing an issue with the older graphic drivers on your system, for some reason. So yeah, just try updating them. Could apply to your sound drivers as well (those are from 2009)...if newer ones are available, try updating those too.

You need to get the vanilla version stable before you start adding any mods to it. This is crucial since adding mods can increase instability and bugs.
The thing about mods are you cant simply disable them in FOMM or bash and say oh it cant be the mods since i disabled them. By default fallout 3 new vegas uses textures meshes sounds etc in the
.bsa files you'll find in the data folder. Theres a thing called archive invalidated which force the game to use updated textures and other data files (mods install them in the data folder). There may also be .ini updates depending on
the mod and how you install it. So just disabling a mod doesnt necessarily rule it out. If the vanilla version isnt stable or relatively stable then you need to do some troubleshooting with it first.

What other games do you play? Do they run well? Did this just all of a sudden start? What other stressful things do you do to your system? Im not talking about word processing or email or web surfing.
The issue is those things barely "stress" your system at all. People often find as they go from this mode of computing to Games that their system is inadequate and crashes all of a sudden or freezes etc.
They automatically blame the game since no other app causes this right? There are aplications out there specifically designed to "Stress" your system. By this i mean 100% load on the cpu, gpu, load on the sound card,
flooding memory buses, etc. This increases power consumptionn of your components as well as heat output. PC Games (not all mind you but most) are a good example of this kind of application. If your system isnt properly designed and cooled or you dont have an adequate power supply or you have cheap or weak components that dont do well with stress (basic staples memory modules) you PC will crash, freeze, even reboot it self or shut itself down.

:grad: ok end of rant. So you should really make sure the vanilla version of fallout 3 is running well enough on its own.

Make sure your drivers are up-to-date. GO right to the source if you can. Nvidia has released a couple drivers over what you have installed (according to the dxdiag you posted).
You need to check your motherboard, sound card, and if applicable keyboard and mouse drivers too (if you have like a logitech mouse or something). Again go to the source like
the motherboard manufacturers website and sound card website.

I would reinstall the game also do a clean reinstall. Backup your save games and delete the saved game directory entirely as well as your falloutnv directory insteam (the uninstall wont delete it).
Make sure to monitor your system temperatures. You should also clean boot to check for background program problems (you dont seem to have too much loaded though).

I have tried to remove all the mods from the folder, including meshes and such, but it didn't work any good. I have played with those mods basicly since the game was released, and I have played through the story once. I say something must have happened since the last update. Because I haven't played the game for maybe one or two months, and if I remember it correctly, it was automaticly updated when I was about to play it and suddenly it was all [censored] up.

I play ArmA and Far Cry 2 aswell. Now, those games are older, but arma for instance requires pretty much of my computer (a lot more than new vegas) and it runs smooth on high and very high settings. New Vegas did also run smooth even on the highest graphic settings. This problem - with the game freezing when leveling up just popped up very suddenly. I've had problem with the game before, such as random lag, buggs, glitches, crashes , but this wasn't a huge problem for me. Especially not since the game was patched up.

The version I have of windows 7 is a pre-release version of it. This means that every time i logg into my windows account, I'll get a message saying This pre-release of windows has expired. To keep using windows, back up your files, and then try to install any released version of windows 7 ultimate.''. This also means that it's not possible for me to use any of those automatic windows update and my computer restart itself automaticly after exactly two 120 minutes. I simply haven't got enough money to buy a new version so it's never been done.

However, I've never had any problems with the game I've been playing except for new vegas - wich suddenly started to freeze when leveling up. And it's not about if it will freeze when I level up. It will freeze - instantly. And I suspect it might have something to do with the latest update since this problem popped up after that.

It likely has to do with the latest update and a mod(s) your using. Each time they update fallout it can break mods in use. WHat mods do you use? DOes the issue happen on earlier saves or a new game character?
Try this: Load an earlier save and go into the console (~ key) and type "advlevel" no quotes. THis will force a level up. Does it crash? Try this with earlier saves and a new character. Just make a new one and then after the docs stuff type the console command. Make sure NOT to overwrite your saved game. Just test it.

If you cant seem to narrow it down then I would recommend a reinstall of the game and try your save game on the vanilla version NO mods at all. Make sure to backup your saved games. When you remove the local content make sure to delete the falloutnv directory manually and delete the saved game directory (after tyou backup the saves folder). Then reinstall the game. Try to level then and check the stability with both your saved game AND a new character.
If you do happen to find a mod that is causing the freeze then you need to check nexus for an update. I would recommend checking all your mods for updates.

Based on another thread currently a bit below this one, I'll suggest trying the ATI D3D9 .dll fix. It's possible that for some reason, the new patch has made it so your system would like to use it again (or for the 1st time, if you never needed it before).

Something else to try, anyway. :) http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34970

Edit: Ooops for some reason I thought you had an ATI card. Here's the Nvidia version: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778

I reininstalled the game, deleted all mods (including It's folders) and started a new game at least three times but it still frooze when I leveled up. I tried the advlevel command in my old saves and it made the game freeze aswell.
Very weird, since the gameI never have froozen when leveling up before. This issue have popped up from nowhere.

However, what really is [censored] up aswell is that when i reininstalled the game, I had to 'download' from it steam before installing. Why? It seems very stupid. I have the game on a CD for christ sake..I don't trust steam.

Thanks a lot, but it didn't work (nothing works for me as always). The first one didn't do anything at all - the game still frooze up when i leveled up, and the second simply made the screen black when I started the game.

So your windows isnt capable of updating itself at all? Even manually? You havent gotten all the security updates, stability updates, KB updates, bug updates, redist updates, etc, etc, since some pre-release date?
If your windows version isnt current then that may be the problem. Just because you've been fine up to know doesnt mean you will never encounter problems. BTW if the above is true then I would strongly recommend
you get the full version of windows since you are making yourself vulnerable to attacks. Those security updates are important. Does IE allow you to download updates manually?

If you have no mods installed (vanilla) then it shouldnt be happening. This isnt a common issue and those who have had it resolved it to a mod they were using.

When you say your game is freezing can you get into the task manager to kill it or do you have to reboot? What does your event viewer say? Start menu type into the textbox at the bottom 'event viewer'.
Look under applications. ANything relating to falloutnv or anything time/dated when the freeze happened.

Have you tried a clean boot?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

ALso here are some updated run-times (there are also windows auto updates for these 2 which may be causing problems):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en#RelatedResources

It may be the only thing you can do is reinstall the game from your CD and dont let steam update it.

Try this to get it to run from the CD:
Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc

1) Log in to Steam and click on Library.
2) Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm. ALso make sure to delete the falloutnv directory and saved game directory (again backup saves)
3) Insert the first disc into your computer.
4) Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
5) Press Windows Key + R to open Run
6) In the Run window type:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:

Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

I think even during installation you should be able to go to the properties for falloutnv and find the update tab. Select do not auto update this game.
This isnt guaranteed to work though. You may have to put steam into offline mode or disable your network adapter. You'll have to do some of your own
googling for that though.

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
