Game Guide Worth the Money?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:58 pm

Someones birthday is here and they love New Vegas. Was thinking of getting the game guide for them, but wasn't sure if it was worth it knowing that the Vault has so much accurate and up-to-date information on it. This young gamer is already aware of the Vault and will reference it in times of need. This is what is making me hesitant to go get it.

Can anyone who has purchased it let me know what they feel are reasons in favour (or against) of getting it?

Thanks.

The guide is dead wrong in multiple places. Better give the guy link to the FNV Wikia as a gift. :-)

I have it and I think it's great. The Vault is also great and using them together helps me with the game so I don't miss things.

The Guide has flowcharts with quest options depending on what path you want to take, a huge map showing locations, crafting locations, where collectibles are, faction locations and threats, unique weapons and more. The Guide lists every quest, side quest, primary and secondary locations, how to build a better character, gambling info, weapons, ammo, and much more. It just really adds to the experience and the soft cover guide isn't really expensive. I think it would be a great gift and you don't have to look at each quest if you want to go it alone first. :)

I was always a bit skeptical about game guides. Until a friend gave me the CE edition of FNVs Game Guide. There is just so much info readily accessible. I say go for it.

Thank you everyone for the quick & helpful responses. So far I like what I am hearing (except for the inaccurate parts).

Clearly. Something I prefer to avoid like the plague. However, this particular player likes to make sure they got everything. It would be nice too if the guide gave a little 'history' on the NPCs or 'Did you knows?' about the regions that maybe aren't in the game.

Even though they can find all the information on the internet, I personally would really like a fancy book containing a lot of charts, maps and tips. I would really use it even though you can find it on the wiki. I have no practical reason for it, it's a little quirk of mine I guess.

I'd say get it. If they like new vegas I think it'd be an excellenet gift.

Every book has some inaccuracies but I can only think of one and I've been playing a lot. There were a few scripting problems that may make a quest a bit different but the book is waaaay mostly right and not wrong.

Don't waste money on those books, look on the internet and get as much information as you can then make your own book :).

Most guides get at least some things wrong simply because they're often written before the final version of the game is completed, so they can publish it same time as game is released. Doesn't make them worthless. Haven't bought the NV guide myself tho...used to buy guide books a lot for when I'd get stuck, but with the net as it is now, I rarely go to the trouble. :)

You not only are implying with such a gift he can't play the game properly, you also are giving him a book full of wrong tips to improve it suggesting even such a book is better than what he does now. :-)

Clever idea. Hadn't thought of that.

Seems to be a larger negative swing to the book.

I always buy the guides for big games like this.. Mainly for the maps. I like to figure out and do quests on my own but I love the maps. If you like to explore and find everything there is to find then the guide is just a good asset to have.
I also like it just so I don't have to get up and go to the computer every time I want to know something. But like others have pointed out there are some things that the guide left out... Wiki is great for finding out that extra stuff.. I usually use it after the fact.. I find something in the game.. Can't find it listed in the guide. Go to the computer to find out the exact details.

Won't be back online today, but thanks for all of the responses. I'll check back on tomorrow morning before heading out gift shopping to see if anyone else has added anything!

Thanks again!

If your looking for information regarding anything on the game, do not buy it. As many others have stated, wiki is much more resourceful.

Having said that, I own both previous CE Guides simply because I wanted to know and experience every nuance of the game. I can flick through it and find a random location that has some uniqueness, this is somewhat lost on the wiki guide. There is a novelty to the guide too, if your sure the person almost-worships the game they will most certainly enjoy the guide given its immense effort of knowledge in each and every path; location; mechanic; etc. The one thing I didn't like in comparison is that F:NV Guide has a really badly indexed location system, FO3 was much more simpler.

Personally I love the novelty of it, it may sound odd but I enjoy flipping through it and knowing that extra bit about something -especially with such a lore that is FO.

If your friend is a collector then the guide is probably worth it just for that. I don't have the NV guide yet, but I bought the FO3 one just to be able to flip through it and put it in my collection.

If he's not a collector and he doesn't mind using Google (and also doesn't mind using home-made guides) then all the hints and tips you'd ever need for the game are already online for free.

I Preorded the CE Guide and it is useful as a reference, but the Wiki is more detailed and more accurate.

If your friend can use a book efficiently than it is good; otherwise it is just a guide, nothing more.

May be http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1143980-ncr-veteran-ranger-costume/ would be good.

I was pretty skeptical about the guide. Been years since i bought a game guide.

But after my first play through, I bought the collectors edition guide.

Great big map is awesome
Nice tables for stat info, weapons, armor, etc.
some interesting concept art / cool graphics

If they're a fallout fan, they'll love this!

I think actually has helped me get more out of the game

Game guides are never "worth it" in my eyes. As all the info is covered with free wiki's and what not thats usually more accurate as it can be updated as the game changes. Plus you find out most of the stuff thats in there by just playing the game in the first place. Only reason I could think of is if you want reading material whe nyou take a trip to the "library" aka bathroom. :P

I got the guide with the game when it dropped. I was disappointed.

I'd forget about it, the wiki is superior.
