Game loaded, Can't Play

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 4:46 pm

So I bought Fallout: New Vegas from Steam. Downloaded it, tried to run it and i hit play, Automatically a message pops up and says: FalloutNV has stopped working and that windows will let me know if they find a reason, yada yada yada. I have undated my Graphics card, have enough ram/gigs, checked the system requirements and nothing is working, i just spent 50 bucks, all i wanna do is play the damn thing. From what i hear, im not alone on this so hopefully, they will put it together and fix this issue.

Your video card is well below the minimum for Fallout 3, and if anything, the many added instabilities that Obsidian has managed to introduce only worsen the situation for any weak old hardware.

Laptops, due to the manufacturing methods, are about 98 to 99% impossible to get upgraded CPUs / GPUs into, so it's now past the time for that elderly laptop to be replaced, sorry, it's just the fate of laptops not to last very long before they are too old.

However, I must admit that the weakness and slowness involved do not automatically mean that your laptop is supposed to fail to try operating with this game. The nature of the DxDiag report's unformatted main body is such that between my visual correction, and this old CRT display, the main wall to wall blocks of text are miningless swimming soups of words and characters. I can get down to the sound processor's first entry, about 5% down, and that's it. Maybe there's more in that report to help.

It remains my opinion that you will not enjoy the slowness when you finally get (if you do) the game to start. Sorry.

It is not possible for software to make any physical changes to old hardware. Drivers do not add capabilities that the hardware wasn't built to provide, and that video card design is now three years old. When new, it was for business, to display charts, graphs, presentations, and sprtedsheets. It was not designed for gaming, and has very little speed.

Fallout NV was created using an even older gaming engine, Gamebryo, and modern business cards can run the game with low settings, because it (Gamebryo) has hardly been changed the past three years, and video cards do gradually improve over time, at all levels.

so basically my options are : buy a new computer, or be without the game?

I never said that. Every individual has his / her own set of expectations for such things as games. The estimation that game developers make is that slow frame rates with low quality images won't sell well. They name a minimum that should run a relatively decent 25 to 35 frames a second, at low image quality on a medium resolution screen.

That same choice will also run better medium image quality at a lower screen resolution withourt losing frame rates. Folks who are willing to accept low resolution and low image quality are those with cards similar to yours. What I said before was that I wouldn't like the results, or something similar (let's see)

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but you dont NEED,
the graphics cards or whatever that they say? It's just a recommendation
of what you should have to run the game at good settings?

Today, right now, we are in a holding pattern, and we habe BEEN there for about three years. The better cards from three years ago are still very useful today, and the Mainline cards of that time are able to mee the minimum easily. The Gamebryo game engine is quite old, quite cranky and contrary. It was overdue for retirement halfway through Fallout 3's development, The reason it is still usable is that neither Microsoft nor Sony has anything new to replace their old console systems, and those consoles are now four or more years old. They are limited to graphics that is not a bit better than Dx9.0c was four years ago.

Because of the economics of game development, there are very few developers who will limit their games to PCs only (Crytek), so that the console systems' maximum capabilities effectively put a cap on what a PC game can look like (not what it can do, but the image quality, certainly).

Developers have always tried to maximize sales, and always have tended to name minimum hardware that would just "barely" manage to do much of anything (which was the case for Oblivion, when it was new, and the official requirements were just plain stupid, they were just so much Pie in the Sky wishful thinkng). However, they have wanted to also maximize what their games look like, so in the almost five years since then, they crept up through Dx9.0"a" to Dx9.0"b", and for the past year, most arrived at Dx9.0"c".

In so doing, they ended up leaving the very oldest Dx9 capable hardware behind (Radeon 9n00 and Radeon Xn00). The earliest Geforces to run the actual Dx9 functions natively were the Geforce 6n00 cards, of which the top card, with the 6800 number, was the Fallout 3 minimum. Factually, if someone flat out doesn't CARE how slowly a game runs, and how bad it looks, it should be entirely possible to run Fallout NV on a Geforce 6600, or on a Radeon X1300 Pro (the published video card minimums for Fallout NV are moronic: an X1300 XT is actually an X1600 Pro with another name, and the entire Geforce 6n00 generation is most certainly not capable of running the game, since there are 6200s and 6500 in the total).

I can guarantee that a Radeon 9800 cannot run the game, although two years or so ago, there were a few diehards who were willing to play Fallout 3 and not have heads on anyone in order to use their Radeon 9800s. I really doubt that any Geforce FX anything can even run the menus . .

Obsidian did not choose to name any "Recommended" level of PC hardware for this game. I cannot guess why not, but I might as well cover what it is (previously, we named the current developer preferences for minimums as Medium resolution and lowest image quality, with medium frame rates). For the next step, the same medium resolution has been their target, but for mostly high image quality settings (not all maxed), and a frame rate of at least 50 frames a second.

so my question then, and i do appreciate the help big time as i have been a fallout fan from the 1st and 2nd games as well as the 3rd, is what are my options/what can i do to make the game work? im kinda computer stupid... KINDA, what steps do i take to fix the issue?

I bought the game and am trying to play it through Steam.
