Game Mods

Post » Fri Jul 29, 2011 7:47 pm

I've been playing quite a few Neverwinter Nights modules recently, to the point that I have not once even tried playing the campaign that actually comes with the game. I've been having fun only with content that was made for free in somebody's spare time. That got me thinking, what are some good mods out there that people love? There are a lot of mods out here for a lot of games, I know that anybody who has ever installed more then a few mods has a favorite. Tell me, what are yours? It doesn't matter the franchise nor the developer.

There are a few game companies that seem to have modders in mind when they make a game, VALVe and Bethesda are two, what are some others?

Oblivion is the only game PC game I've modded extensively, so I guess I've got to pick that by default. Mods like Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and The Lost Spires are completely amazing though.

I have yet to try Nehrim, unfortunately. I've heard only good things about it, I need to snag it one of these days.

Both Morroind and Oblivion had fantastic mods. I've never been as attracted to Fallout mods though.

When it came to Morrowind, I think there was a higher level of professionalism with a lot of things people created, while Oblivion's mods often come across as somewhat cheap. Despite all that, I think I had the most fun with Oblivion's mods. Because Oblivion was essentially an updated version of Morrowind, you could do more with mods due to the new features Morrowind lacked. I also think most mods in Oblivion really helped brighten up that really dull vanilla experience that Morrowind didn't need as much improvement in.

Aside from Valve, I don't really know any companies that have such fantastic mod support as Bethesda does. It's certainly one of the most appealing features every time Bethesda releases a game. I cherish vanilla experiences for what they're worth, and Bethesda doesn't usually disappoint on that end, but when a game is released that has that level of support for mods, it doesn't even matter how good the game is on its own. There is such a fantastic community that works day and night to create new, free content to ensure that your gaming experience is never dull. And that community could not exist without all of the love it is given.

Mount&Blade has quite a lot of interesting mods. The STALKER series too. And Minecraft.

Deus Ex has a few really good ones. And there are several custom campaigns for the L4D games that are really really good.

It's hard to say if Morrowind or Oblivion has better mods. Both have tons of good mods. I just feel that I need mods to make Oblivion enjoyable these days (fixing the UI, level scaling and some other flaws that are really annoying) whereas in Morrowind they're a nice extra most of the time.

My favorite game mod is http://www.thief2x.com/ for Thief 2. It could be mistaken for being a real expansion.

http://www.thedarkmod.com/ for Doom 3 is quite nice too.

That's all I came here to say, actually.

The Total War series has some amazing mods. I consider Europa Barbarorum for Rome and Third Age for Medieval 2 to be among the best mods for any game I've ever seen. Other favourites are Brytenwalda and Sword of Damocles for Mount and Blade: Warband. All four of these mods are complete overhauls, basically new games, and in each case better than the original.

An honourable mention goes to Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, for making that abomination of a game somewhat enjoyable.

Kind of a tie between Morrowind and Oblivion. OB has OBSE, which has way more extensions that MWSE does (allowing, therefore, way more possibilities of mods that can bypass hardcoded crap in the game). On the other hand, I love Morrowind's setting much more than OB's, and found I had to mod the heck out of the game to make it the way I wanted.

Morrowind had most of the mods that I wanted to play, so I have to go with that one. It was easiest to mod for, which is why modders could be more ambitious, and you got super-mods like Wizards' Islands and Lokken Mountain coming out.

Oblivion took much longer to get "up to speed" in terms of quality, and there wasn't the variety, though I have played some excellent mods for the game.

Fallout/New Vegas modding never really took off for me. I've made some mods for each, and have a few more in development that I tinker with from time to time, but my mods generally got ignored because they weren't what people were interested in using, and I tended to ignore other people's mods, because they weren't what I was interested in using. So it's not like they were "bad" mods, just very well-made things that just didn't personally appeal.

I'm an optimistic guy, so I'm still waiting for Bethesda to give modders the green light to port Morrowind to another engine :P

I mean it's not like they can release the source code since apparently it got lost, and I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of modders who would love to port Morrowind to something like Unreal 3 or CryEngine (when they release the CryEngine tool kit)

Anyway, it svcks that the Morrowind modding community is slowly dying, there are so many great mods for that game and modding it is so much fun. :nope:

Modding it is[ fun. Believe it or not, I still do mod for Morrowind, but just at my own pace, which is much slower these days. I've been working on a little mod for months - something simple, nothing fancy - but it's like I move one piece of furniture every day and that's all I do.

People's lives change - when Morrowind came out, I was single and lived in a rented houseshare. Now I'm married, baby on the way, house to take care of - doesn't leave much time for playing games, let alone modding them. A lot of modders I know are in the same situation - what was once a very high priority just gets moved down the list as other things come up.

Plus it's got to the point where I know where every rock and plant is in Morrowind, so rarely feel like playing it.

I'm pretty certain that I'll be modding for Skyrim, though - once little Dovakhiin* is old enough to give me enough time to play.

That would be awesome.

Of course you don't need to http://bethblog.com/index.php/2011/02/18/ladies-and-gentlemen-start-your-creation-engines/ because you get the Bethesda games for free already anyway. :P
