Game is more immersive w/o companions

I can see the complaint, and I agree that it takes me out of the game when Cass repeats the exact same line the hundredth time, but there have been some ways in which having companions has helped my immersion. The most important thing, I think, is being able to load all my junk into ED-E; the amount one character can carry is downright immersion-breaking, so I feel better knowing I have a floating backpack around.

Also, I like taking ED-E into Vault 3 and hearing the druggies freak out. Hilarious.

I'm finding that I enjoy the game more when I don't have any companions! I explore much, much more cautiously, as well as more thoroughly when I'm on my own. Having companions seems to give me a feeling of invincibility and I move faster,w less caution.

I think if there was a mod to give me a carrying capacity of 3 X, I'd play most of the game single. There are times I can't get by w/o companions: massed Carazons (sp?), Deathclaws, etc - the companions just make good bait/shields then.

If the game didn't have all the landscape/invisible walls that force you into a fixed approach to areas, I could probably get by w/o companions by using the landscape features for advantage or avoidance. FO3 was better in this regard.

Agreed I was walking around with boone and I just drew attention to things for him to kill, it made me lazy and not caring, so I started again and now I'm not getting him or anyone else.

I like the idea of companions, who have their own quests that you can follow.

But as a sniper, I find that they are really a nuisance. I like to snipe from afar, but the problem is, if an enemy sees his friend dead, I will go into CAUTION mode. Normally I would wait it out till the mode goes back to HIDDEN, but my companions would charge ahead eventhough I told them to be passive. This of course ends my sneak attack attempts.

I would like to change the passive stance for companions, to only fire if I am being shot at or in DANGER mode, rather than if I am in CAUTION mode.

When i'm sniping i just turn the companions' AI off ("tai" console command), and they're unable to do, or say, anything. If the enemy gets too close i let them loose. Just my way of saying "Don't move a muscle until i say so." :D

Is there a way to do that without using the console?
