Hello all,

the first time i started Fallout New Vegas and had my first trip with shooting, exploring and so on............... it was so horrible to play because anytime NPCs are running around i got massuvelay lags and no chance to do anything it is unplayable, but.............



with that System:

Windows 7 64bit
8 gig DDR 3 1600
ATI HD 5970
AMD Phenom X4 965 Black Editon Quad Cors

i cant play with more then medium settings..................uhm ? The first Step that made the game running a bit smoother was to set the virtuell memory in Windows 7 to "off".


So the next step has been to resolve this Problem. After searching the following keywords in the www............... "Fallout New Vegas performance".

I just found a downloadable file called d3d9.dll and the instruction to copy it into my Fallout Game folder. So i did and now i can play everything on max settings without getting that bunch of lags.

Hope this might someone else help out to get the game running smoother like it did for me.

This has been posted here a dozen times, it works for some but not all...

First, it would be beneficial for you to set the virtual memory or "page file" to a second hard drive if you have one. I have my page file set to my D: drive and have noticed a slight performance increase.

Also, if you're using the d3d9 fix, there's no need to turn off virtual memory, you're better off leaving it on even if you only have one hdd. You would think that even with having 8GB of DDR3 that windows does not need to use virtual memory.......not true.

Finally, i'm not sure which d3d9 file you found, but there is an optimized one for ATI cards. It can be found here:

And also thanks to another poster on this forum, i replaced the atimgpud.dll found in the fallout new vegas install folder with the 64 bit version found here (it's located in the utility section, just click on "CrossFire Detect (September 2007)" and it will start the download:

http://developer.amd.com/gpu/radeon/pages/RadeonSDKSamplesDocuments.aspx#utility once unzipped, navigate to the x64 folder and copy/paste that file into your fallout new vegas install folder (make sure to back up the original one first for safety).

If you notice hard drive thrashing and game stutter when running, or panning the view your hard drive could be badly fragmented too. I used a defragmenter to put windows on the outer track, then the game folder after windows then my documents folder, rest was sorted by folder name alphabeticly. then I ran power defragmenter (a front end for contig.) And set it to defrag the games folder to check that every file was in one fragment if they werent contig would make it so.

For now you could use Contig+Power defragmenter, to defragment any game files or folder quickly instead of doing a full defrag which take many hours.

The game is running fine now................. thx for the hint with virtual memory and defragmentation but those things i always check first gg

I guess yes it will be help because its the same game the same files and the same problems so it might also help you.

But i still got some dfgdsfgsdf BUG left when i want to trade with the travelling trader everytime crash to desktop no chance to make a deal with him @ Mojave Outpost gggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
