Game speed is way to fast!

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 8:08 am

Hey guys I'm not sure what happened to my game. I finished playing Skyrim one night and the next day when I started up the game again it was running at this speed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a youtube video to show what I'm talking about.

What are your FPS when this happens? Do you have vSync disabled?

Frames go from 35-60 depending on the location. I'm not even sure how to disable V-sync on the game so it should be whatever it is set to from the factory.

Thanks

Alright, try deleting both your INI files and letting the launcher re-generate them.

My Documents/My Games/Skyrim. Delete Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini. Run the launcher and it'll re-set your graphic settings, then play the game and see if that helps.

I just deleted both files, then Skyrim recreated them when I opened the game. But, the speed issue is still there.

Some system specs might help at this point.

Are you using Windows XP? It had some timing issues with earlier multicores, especially from AMD, that caused some games to run at erratic speeds unless you installed some "driver" to sync CPU cycle counters.

Processor : AMD X3 720
GPU: Asus 4890
Memory: 8GB

Running on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1

The weird thing is nothing has changed hardware wise since the problem started a few day ago.

Thanks

If you have "Dual Core Optimizer" installed, try uninstalling that. If you don't have it installed, try installing that. It may be the cause of your problems or exactly what you need. I think a Batman game may install this if you don't already have it.

Anyway, what you're specifically seeing is "stutter", where the Frames Per Second seems fine, but the actual performance isn't.

Generalnmx, from what I read when I researched "Dual Core Optimizer" is it was only needed for XP. Windows 7 is already optimized for multi-core processors.

I wonder what it would even do on my processor considering its a tri-core.

Thanks

Did you even check to see if you have it installed? I hear some installers, like for one of the Batman games, installs it anyway on Windows Vista/7.

You heard correct mate. Arkham Assylum and City installed it on mine.

It wasn't installed so I downloaded version 1.1.4

It didn't fix the issue, thank you for the suggestion though.

Hmm, go ahead and uninstall that (Dual Core Optimizer) then. As you said, it's designed for Windows XP.

As for your issue...well, I experienced stutter recently I solved by doing a clean install of my graphics drivers. You're using an AMD video card, so download the 12.1 Preview Driver here: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Catalyst-12-1-Preview-Get-Custom-modding-Now-Supports-More-GPUs-242509.shtml (2nd link, "modified"), but don't install it just yet!

Go ahead and follow this guide: http://benchmark3d.com/how-to-completely-remove-any-driver to remove AMD Catalyst software and Graphics drivers (JUST that software).

Then install the 12.1 Preview modded drivers.

I can't believe I didn't try that before. I am already using the 12.1 preview driver. I didn't have the modified version of it though. I bet that's part of the issue, considering I'm using a 4890 card. I'll follow your suggestions and report back.

Thanks

Odd, the 12.1 Preview Driver only lists 6000 series and 5000 series. I didn't think it would install on a 4000 series without a driver package mod (which only mods the INF to add the references so older chipsets will install).

I'm not sure what happened. Its my own fault to not reading the driver description page fully. But I've been using the preview driver since the day it came out.

Just installed the modified driver, and the game is still going to fast. At first I thought I was crazy. lol But with almost 74 hours in the game I definitively notice then game settings change.

You guys think maybe I should try the 11.12C drivers?

Other then reinstalling the game I don't know what else to try.

That's really, really odd.

Open up Catalyst Control Center, go to Gaming, 3D Application Setttings then finally scroll down to "Wait for Vertical Refresh" drag the slider to the maximum setting. See if that helps.
You also might want to enable or disable triple buffering (down the bottom of the same page).

Other than that I'm not sure what might help I'm sorry.

If you still suspect it may be an issue with the early AMD multicore, try locking it to a 100% frequency state via Power options -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings. There's an entry for "processor power management" if you scroll down a bit.

My old laptop has XP and an Athlon X2 CPU, and sometimes even with the Dual-Core Optimizer installed it runs games at crazy speed unless I disable power saving.

Have you tried playing with the sgtm setting in the console?
Typing "sgtm 1" (without the quotes) should set the game speed to normal, .5 would be half speed, and 2 double speed.
