GAME store filed for ponies

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 9:03 pm

Not seen any threads about this yet, but the UK retailer GAME filed for administration today.

This article about it is from yesterday:

Will this affect gamestation as well, I wonder? It's a real shame, if GAME shuts down totally there won't be a lot of viable alternatives to supermarkets. Better spend all my reward points whilst I can.

I'm glad they're going down, they're rotten to the core.

I buy my games of amazon anyway. Its cheaper.
I wonder how much the cash exchange in town would give me. I may visit game, they should be selling games cheap, I wonder if I could sell them for a profit.
I missed woolworths, I wont miss out on this oppertunity either.

What's that? Oh, marginalising the PC section might have had a part to play in this? Too late now, you say?

Haven't been a GAME shopper in years. What's the point, when their prices were so high and their selection so poor? Give me Amazon, Play.com, GOG and Steam anyday.

"brick and mortar" retailers are doomed. I think the next consoles will have digital delivery and storage.

I personally don't mind seeing anything remotely like the atrocious GameStop I have to deal with puffing into smoke. Horrible customer service.

I always liked GAME. They were better nicer places than Gamestation and you could pick up some decent second hand stuff. Well, until they stopped selling PC games. The one in my town closed down a few years back. It's getting to the point where online and mail distribution is the only way forward.

I think we've got a GAME and a Gamestop in the city too I think, but can't say I have too much experience with them since they are located in the middle of the city, and I've got plenty of different alternatives around here. I keep hearing crap/etc about GAME from people though, but I've never experienced anything negative with them.

Hell no. I own a few things digitally. But I will always choose physical copies if its an option.
If I was forced to buy digital only, I would just stop buying, or end up buying things. Then putting them on disk. Becuase I paid for it, I own it. Having a physical copy garuntees ownership of the item I purchased.

Well, I wasn't saying it should be like that, I'm just saying it probably will be like that.

Except for, y'know, having to use DRM before you can play your physical copy...

Anyway, this is a shame, I shopped at GAME quite often, they had a much better selection of games than supermarkets, and sometimes I want a game immediately instead of waiting for delivery.

for me, digital versions are immeasurably superior. To get to town, it takes an hour there and back, in half that time I can download and install a game from steam. I'm somewhat disorganized, so I find having unlimited downloads very useful also.

I've only had one bad experience with a Game Store.

But I prefer buying things physically. I would hate to have to buy things at Wal-Mart.

In ten years time, there will not be a single brick and mortar shop selling any kind of movies, videogames or music.

If I'm wrong, I'll eat my computer.

I'm not surprised. I hated Game, they always nicked the pre-order codes and had non-existent customer service. Amazon put them to shame in that regard. The only reason I ever shopped there is because of their habit of getting exclusives on collector's editions.

Although I generally think that reducing competition is really not a good thing, Game were toxic for gamers, so in their case... good riddance. I do feel sorry for the decent people who worked there, of which there were reportedly many, but the company's infrastructure and policies made them less good than many of their staff.

I used to love their old budget PC games sections - 3 for £15 and you could usually find some gems.

We used to have a Gamestation, then last year it changed to GAME. It was pretty crap, HMV normally had a better selection. I mostly use Amazon anyway

Maybe the other way around. Gamestop is way too big, they merged with pretty much all of their retail competitors.

I miss the original Babbage's, Funcoland, and Electronics Boutique...

Yeah, I think so. Though I heard that Gamestop never quite descended to the depths of Game's crapulence.

If Game bought out Gamestation, and now Game is going bust, does that mean all the Gamestations will close?
