gamesas grabbing Game of Thrones?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:24 pm

I realize the actual name of the series is A Song of Ice and Fire, but for the sake of brevity, I just said Game of Thrones.

So, we know that Bethesda really considered making a game for the series, but denied it on account that they wanted to spend time working on their own universe.
And thus, development passed on to Cyanide (http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Bethesda-Considered-Song-Ice-Fire-Game-35105.html)

I'm curious about whether Bethesda will reconsider after milking out Skyrim, and buy the rights to make a TES-esque game for these enthralling books. Personally, I think they'd make a perfect match, and on top of that, Cyanide is making a RTS game with it so a new one wouldn't be unoriginal.

From what I've read, I got the impression that Bethesda just didn't want to make a ASOIAF (even the abbreviation is long...) at the moment, i.e. they might want to after they 'work on their own universe.'

Any thoughts? Should I be hopeful?

I think two IPs are enough for Bethesda. It already takes them long enough to make games as it is. Do you really want to be waiting close to ten years for the next TES game?

Bethesda are horrednous at their own story, I'd hate to see them ruin a story that is already well established and written. I'd rather Bioware make A Song of Ice and Fire if it was going to be an RPG.

Cyanide is also doing an http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/10/more-details-on-the-game-of-thrones-rpg/#more-12375 as well the RTS which I heard had some good idea but fell short on them. I have no idea how I feel about this to tell you the truth, on one hand I think it would a great idea, and on the other I would rather have Bethesda focus on Fallout and TES series instead of the Game of Thrones.

I guess that's why the last two games they developed didn't take GOTY. Oh, wait...they did.

If they were to do another game, I'd rather them do something outside of the current settings they already employ. A zombie survival game or a western game in their style would be great, another knight-in-armor fantasy game, not so much.

If it has a crappy story it ain't gonna take nothing. it's just going to be another meh game that could've been more. You may not think they are capable of writing a decent story, but that is just an opinion...your opinion. Don't state your opinion and then try to put them off as facts. Those GOTY awards actually do account for something.

Not true at all. GOTY is sort of a joke. First of all, every publisher names some GOTY, so it's not like the title is prestigious. Second, GOTY is normally indicative of the best all-around game, and has nothing to do with story specifically. COD4 and Halo 2 have both won GOTY. Did they have stellar stories? They weren't even very good overall.

Bethesda really can't write a compelling main story, or they haven't yet. Morrowind's was only interesting because of the lore behind it, the actual progression of the story was unoriginal. Oblivion didn't even have the lore going for it, since it was so well hidden behind quest markers. Fallout 3 I didn't even finish, but the "where's daddy" angle it started with is bad enough.

Again, that's just an opinion. Whether I agree with it or not doesn't make a bit of difference.

As far as GOTY goes, while it isn't everything, it is indicative that they are more than capable presenting their games in a reasonable fashion, and thus are capable of winning those awards for the games in which they develop, multiple times. I think that says something about them as a developer that some people are obviously incapable seeing, or unwilling to admit to.

Bethesda already have a perfectly good fantasy series, they don't need another one.

If we had to write "in my opinion" after every opinion, forums would be hell to read. At least I backed my opinion up with examples and facts.

GOTY is perhaps indicative that they do a good job with what they've done so far. It says nothing about their ability to handle an entirely different political fantasy setting with pre-established lore and an ongoing book series.

Ehh, i'd rather Bioware not touch A Song of Ice and Fire. All they seem to care about anymore is Romance options. :P

...And they had never touched the Fallout series before. IIRC that won GOTY as well. Your argument doesn't quite hold up there. Despite how you personally feel about it, fallout 3 was a pretty good game that deserved the awards that it won.

Fallout 3 was about more than, "have you seen my father?" Not that I felt that line was the best writing in the world, but then neither one of us are writing for Bethesda, so what does that say.

  • The Fallout franchise doesn't have as much lore already established
  • Fallout was dead in the water when Bethesda picked it up, so they had creative freedom
  • Fallout 3 was set on the opposite coast of the first two, and many years in the future, allowing them even more freedom

  • ASoIaF has lots of pre-established lore (I imagine, I haven't actually read it)
  • George R.R. Martin is still writing it, giving him creative control

As a result, Fallout allowed Bethesda to stretch their creativity. They didn't need to work around a lot of old stuff, and they didn't have to work around any outside forces like authors. The narrative was less important, it was what they did with the world and the player's freedom. That's their strong suit. ASoIaF would rely on their ability to write a story that's compelling and fits with George's world. They'd have to work with what he gives them or allows them. They would have less creative freedom, and the game won't be as good because of it.

Bethesda already has their own sword-and-sorcery fantasy saga. Another one is just redundant. Let someone else take it, and see what a serious contender they can be on the market.

So apparently, if a game wins "Game of the Year" or something, that means it automatically has a good story, but if someone doesn't think so, it's "just an opinion?"

I've only played three Bethesda games so I'm not exactly an expert on their overall stories, but I really liked the stories in Fallout 3 and New Vegas mostly because they were always changing. Admittedly I do feel the story and the world in Oblivion(currently playing and haven't finished it yet) seems a bit over the top, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I do completely agree that Bioware is the best overall choice for making A Song of Ice and Fire into a game. The story, dialogue, characters, setting and depth in Dragon Age: Origins, in my opinion, is better then any other game I have ever played, I have never fallen into any other world so quickly.

Come now, Oblivion may have had a lot going for it, but anyone who thinks the story writing (aside from some side quests, which were extremely well executed) is anything to shout about is kidding themselves. Even FIFA has a more compelling storyline.

Actually...I think the best developer for ASoIaF would be the guys that made the Witcher series. It has the most similarities IMO. I cannot for the life of me remember the name though. I want to say redeye or something...I am on a chinese PC right now so looking things up svcks when you do not understand half the damn language on the system. Forums are good though. I miss my PC....

BTW the main quest stories for TES games have always been meh on the representation. They are too set in making the story comfortable that they do not take risks like they should for an interesting story. The story does not svck, it is just not exactly good writing. It is safe writing presented in an interesting way. I like the stories they tell but I am never blown away by them unless I start reading way too much into the Lore. If you dig deep enough the ramifications of the stories are incredibly intersting and dynamic. For the average joe player though. All they see is some mediocre story that has basically been told a thousand times. Save the worlf from demonic forces.

Oblivion might actually have had us playing the unintentional role of a villain, Mehrunes Dagon might have been trying to save us by preventing Alduin from destroying the world. He used to be the Leaper Devil King before Alduin changed him. He actually helpd save some of the previous world when Alduin destroyed it before. I am kind of convinced that Mehrunes Dagon has been misrepresented on purpose. Incredibly so. He is not exactly good but his intent was possibly for Nirns benefit.

See Lore makes it so much more interesting...

No doubt, but what do they mean?

http://www.spike.com/events/video-game-awards-2011-nominees/voting/game-of-the-year

This website has begun voting for their 2011 GOTY award. Skyrim is a contender yet it hasn't even been released yet. What criteria are they using to vote for/against Skyrim? If Skyrim does win their GOTY award, what does that actually mean?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Awarded GOTY by Spike.com

*Based on what?

CD Projekt RED. Also, The Witcher is based on a series of novels.

Have you played Daggerfall? I admit that I haven't, but I gather it had more political machinations and stuff.

Given that the Daedra aren't evil -if anything, they're closer to chaotic neutral- that's certainly a possibility. But given how they treated some of the lore, I rather suspect they just grabbed a pre-established character and modified him to suit a "Demonic forces trying to destroy/take over the world" plot.

Although, there's a fair chance I'm completely wrong about some of that stuff, since I'm definitely not a lore buff :hehe:.
