Gaming Keyboard and Mouse

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:08 pm

I'm currently in the market for a new keyboard and a new mouse, something that's gaming focused. I'm willing to spend up to $100 for both, but the less I spend the better. The requirements for the mouse are at least 1600 dpi and a back and forward button. The keyboard I'm not too sure on, I want something with a decent amount of simultaneous button presses, and if it's backlit that would be preferred though not necessary. I'm not a fan of wireless peripherals, so wired devices are preferred.

So far I've found this http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-Sniper/dp/B002MZZLNW/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1309040053&sr=1-4 for pretty cheap, though it being a Mad Cat brand has me a little hesitant to get it (although the price is pretty nice, so I might do it anyway). This http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823204015&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Keyboards-_-i-rocks-_-23204015 has pretty much everything I want for pretty cheap, but I'm not sure how I feel about the compact size and the lack of volume buttons (I'm used to having a multimedia keyboard). Anyone here have any experience with either of these products?

So what do you guys use? What brands do you recommend? And since I'm here, what are some good flight joy sticks? I might get one for flying choppers/jets in Battlefield 3 since I've never owned one before. Any recommendations?

I have a http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/v5keyboard.htm I got for around $30, works perfect. It seems to be running around $40 now.

I also have a Cyborg Rat 7 mouse, I'll let you look that one up. :P

The story on the mouse, I had a little too much money, it was marked down heavily, and I wanted to try it out. After using it, it's one hell of a mouse imo, I love it.

I like my G500.

I honestly wouldn't buy a gaming keyboard unless it has a LCD screen on it though, either color or otherwise. I have gotten a lot of use out of the LCD screen on my keyboard. Aside from this you can create macro's which isn't really that special. You can program custom macro's with something like http://www.autohotkey.com/ that are as effective as the keyboard and you didn't pay $50 for it.

I've never really seen the point for a gaming keyboard or mouse. My standard Logitech mouse and keyboard suits me perfectly fine for everything I do. Maybe those fancy hotkeys would be nice if you were into hardcoe WoW PvP or something.

I have http://www.logitech.com/en-us/keyboards/keyboard-mice-combos/devices/2963, and it works well. It has one of those bulky USB recievers, not a small dongle, and it isn't backlit, but it has good wireless range and response time. It's listed as $60 on Logitech's website, but I managed to pick it up for around $30 on Amazon.

I prefer gaming mice for the higher DPI, the extra buttons are just the icing on the top. As for gaming keyboards, I haven't used any before, but I would like to get one with better anti ghosting capabilities than standard keyboards. Any other features of the keyboard are just extra.

@Tig ol bitties: 35% is a wonderful deal, plus free shipping (I think). I may end up getting that keyboard and mouse. Thanks :)

Can't speak for keyboards as I'm on a laptop, but I love my http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.169416100/parentCategoryID.35208800/categoryId.40946100 Glides smoothly, good DPI, fits the hand perfectly, and it glows.

That said, if I were to buy another mouse now I would go for the http://www.logitech.com/en-ca/mice-pointers/mice/devices/optical-gaming-mouse-g400

I've been very happy with my Wolf King keyboard and mouse, they are plug-n-play and don't need any drivers. I have the Timber Wolf keyboard and the Trooper (older version) mouse. Love the mouse, still have to test its multi-fire feature in a game. I like the left-hand side of the keyboard, but I no longer use it on account of now I've got a Fragnstein and I don't need to use WASD anymore! :D I've had both for a few years, nothing broken, no buttons stuck, it's good quality. It doesn't have a Numpad, but I never used it on my old keyboard anyway. There is a USB port, but I think I read that it is USB 1.0, not 2.0, I'm not sure. I haven't actually used it yet.

It's pretty light for a mouse. You can adjust the dpi, 800, 1600, to 1200. Newer versions of the Trooper have a higher dpi. The only thing that's rubbed off is the dpi numbers next to the dpi lights. Scrolling isn't smooth (like those fancy expensive logitech wheels), but it isn't clunky. Middle mouse button glows when you activate the multi-fire feature. It fits my hand nicely.

For mice, the two best options are the G500 and the G9x. Which is better for you depends on if you use claw or palm grip. For keyboards, avoid anything with "gaming" in the name, at least for actual gaming. The Razer Blackwidow is a decent keyboard if you were specifically looking for one with Cherry MX Blue keyswitches, and it's the cheapest one with them, but since they're about the worst keyswitches for gaming, it makes a terrible gaming keyboard. My recommendation for keyboards would be to spend less than $30 on any rubber-dome keyboard (since they all feel the same, and media keys are pretty much useless when hotkeys exist), or spend $120ish on a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown keyswitches.
