Geck preview issue

Post » Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:42 pm

For some reason whenever I open a preview box for an item I get this: http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/142/geckissue.jpg

It only happened recently as it worked normally a few days ago. I even reinstalled the geck, but to no avail.

Anyone know how I can get the preview box to being one single image?

Most likely issue is a change to your system's video configuration; such as a driver update, patch update or setting changes. If this is indeed happening to both GECKs, then 100% its something with your computer that changed.

I only posted this in the New Vegas forum.

It only happens in the NV geck, but I have the latest update for my video card and as far as I know the only change that I did before it happened was that I cleaned my registry, but that can't be it because I reinstalled the geck and the problem still persists.

Sorry about that! The Christmas cookies were too-good it seems. :o

Hmmmm that does look like a video card issue to me, but if you still think its the game, I would try fully un-installing FNV and the GECK, then re-install them both from scratch.

I would also try re-installing your video drivers - that might be easier than re-doing the entire game. I would also try another resolution, see if the GECK doesn't like something about your resolution?

Miax,

I have a somewhat similar issue with the preview window, I don't see a choppy image but, no matter what settings I change, I cannot rotate the image in the window. I can zoom in, out but, absolutely no rotations. I get this in both the FO3 and, FNV GECK. I also have the same no rotation issue in the object editing pallets, I've learned to ignore the issue and, just work around it but, it would be nice to have everything working properly.

Being a Mac Guy, I'm not all that windows savvy when it comes to, configuring my system, could this also be a "Video Card" issue? Any suggestions on how I could get my rotations to work? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, on a Intel Pro mac.

I just figured it was something I would have to live with on my funky system, if there is a fix it would be nice.

cev

Edit: Video card, "NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT: all drivers are up to date and, I reset them to default to see if I had accidentally tweaked something in a bad way.

My feeling is that they are both video card incompatebilities with the GECK at it's root, not that something is fundamentally "wrong" with your computers - just that its configuration/setup is not well-supported by the GECK. I had a similar issue with one configuration of my PC in March of last year, and in that case I was also having other troubles with my system. I got a new video card, re-installed XP and everything was happy after the final driver updates. I wouldn't advocate going that far just for the GECK, but in my case it fixed other crashy issues I had with an ASUS card. Switching out to an ATI card definitely made Fallout and the GECK happy on my computer (both Fo3 and FNV).

What this means for you is one of two things; either the GECK simply doesn't like the current video settings (resolution, Hz, multi-monitor, etc) OR your GECK's settings, or you have no hope with the current card/OS configuration. What I would suggest is spending an hour or two playing with the video settings to see if you can find a mix the GECK likes. Try reducing your resolution down to 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600 as a test, or try disabling the 2nd monitor if you use one and seeing if that has an effect. Check the video card configuration section on your system and see if there are other settings that you can tweak, and test those out. You may get lucky and find something that fixes the problem outright, or you'll find no change.

The other place to try if that fails is the GECKCustom.ini, and see if there is a setting in there that can be changed/tweaked to modify the behavior. I just looked through mine and found a few interesting ones:

bRotateCameraAroundLastSelection=0
bPreview=0
bNo3D=0

Also:
bDoTestHDR=0
bDynamicWindowReflections=0
bUseFakeFullScreenMotionBlur=0
bUse Shaders=1
bIgnoreResolutionCheck=0

I'm not sure if any of these would make a difference or break things worse, so if you do experiment (which I encourage), make sure to backup the original first - then try tweaking some of those (or others you might find) to see if there is a way around it. There is an amazing amount of control in the GECKCustom.ini file, I would pay dearly for a manual!!

If all of that fails, you may be stuck unless you change video cards and/or re-install from the base OS with all modern drivers. Your 7300 should do the job.

Thank you for all the input Miaximus, I'm going to try a lot of things to see if I can get it back to normal :)

Thanks again!
