Get stats of the weapon currently targeted by the user?

Thank you in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction. =)

I'm attempting to add a Diablo- or Borderlands-like hovering item information panel. The goal, eventually, is to easily compare your currently equipped gear to whatever item you have stumbled across.

Let's say that the player is close to a weapon and is targeting it. The player is close enough that the game says "pick up Glass Sword". Is there a function that or event that returns, say, that items' unique identifier?
