I get stuck in the landscape and can't get out

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:40 am

I thought Bethesda was very good about this; you couldn't get stuck in a bethesda game. But I get trapped by the Skyrim landscape, a crevice between boulders or some barrels in the corner of a castle- and I can't get out because there is no acrobatics. In Oblivion you just jump out. Just curious if anyone else also occasionally got stuck. This rarely happened in other Elder Scrolls games, the last two anyway, and I don't recall it in Fallout.

No, it's not the major issue of our lives, I was surprised by it; that's all.

Not so sure about Bethesda being good about it.

In Morrowind I got stuck a lot between rocks and always had to reload which could be really annoying. I never always had a recall or levitation spell. But at least it was there. It was very hard to jump free.

I got stuck in Oblivion too (had to Reload) and I also got stuck in a crevice in a cave in FO3 when a monster chased me into it. No way could I jump out. Luckily a Mod Follower got me out.

It`s actually harder to get stuck in Skyrim, but I did get stuck once. Thankfully, my constant jumping shook me free.

I don't have much experience with other TES games, but I only got stuck 2 or 3 times in Fallout 3. Still have yet to have this happen in Skyrim.

You get stuck in Oblivion as much as Skryim? I didn't. Not even close. Sure, you can get stuck in any game. They are not equal events. I get stuck in Skyrim frequently, and no amount of jumping gets me out.

Individual results do vary we're told.

Oh it happened in Fallout and In Oblivion, and acrobatics did not save you. Its actually harder to get stuck in Skyrim because there is no acrobatics so you can't reach the same heights as before. Your stuck because your feet can't touch because the sides keep you from falling.
I managed to get unstuck in skyrim once by using beastform to change be into a werewolf. That was also the only time I've gotten stuck.

It's harder in Skyrim because you've no acrobatics to reach difficult places? You never climbed down a mountain?

I do climb a lot in Skyrim, that could be a key- how people play their game and where.

Bethesda allows you to go just about anywhere that makes sense... doesn't always mean you should. If you can't climb, and you see a hole in a pile of boulders, you normally shouldn't jump in.

You could get stuck in any Bethesda game I have played.

We used to have teleportation to get us out of messes like that.
Should never have been removed.

I don't. My son got stuck after leaving the opening dragon attack- as did I, and I hadn't shared anything about the game to him. Yep- he did it all by himself. Lately I was stuck by some barrels trying to read the books on top of a bookcase.

Wiki says it's possible to climb to the throat of the world by zig zagging up the mountain. I haven't tried that- but I do attempt to climb mountains.

From talking to you it appears I should no longer attempt to navigate the way I did when playing earlier Elder scrolls games. Obviously, one cannot boulder hop great distances as previously one could. But I'm getting stuck in small obstacles- not by jumping off cliffs, cascading down rock faces, etc etc. .

I have reached places on mountains where a script appears and says 'You can't go that direction' (paraphrase) And this has happend in areas not at the boundaries of the game map, but well inside it.

Doesn't appear from the several responses here that people are getting stuck. Not a problem for them. That's interesting.

Well, stupidly. I was doing a storm cloak mission and after i finished i had to report to Ulfric. He finished his sentence and i was just stuck there. Nothing was in my way. It was like someone had got like 3987538572057 sneak and put concrete on my boots... I had to reload... An hour before because i have my saves on only when i want too...

I've gotten stuck quite a few times. Now I just avoid tight places and stick to mountain paths. I do like searching every inch of dungeons tho, because Beth usually rewards my OCD with a few coin and the occasional chest. :P

Reloading is the only reliable way to get unstuck, but I did manage to wiggle and jump my way out of a rock cluster a couple of times. Crouch, twist, move, jump, go 3rd person, etc, rinse and repeat for 5-10 minutes.

It also works to get past followers who stubbornly hang out in doorways.

I've gotten stuck mountian climbing quite a few times. sometimes I got out, sometimes I've had to reload. Once I even tried to shout myself out...yeah worked real well, til I hit the bottom of the mountian :wallbash: Funny thing is I tried it again, NOT on the side of a mountian though, and it didn't work at all, I didn't budge an inch.

I got stuck persisted and got an edge of a rock and it let me move, but ive barely played many games where you dont get stuck in a floor, wall, in an npc, in WOW i fell off a stair and behind a weapons rack, and it wouldnt let me out, no matter what i did, if i didnt hear a i got stuck somewhere story it would be a rare suprise.

It's ancient. Its happened in every Bethesda game I've played (for a reasonable amount of time); It also recently happened to me in FO:NV in the Novac Hotel near the big dinosaur. (Right here http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/ScreenShot36.jpg; though I was not able to duplicate it today... Its complicated to test for and I certainly don't fault them for missing all sorts of areas where it might possibly happen).

It can be if you play on the consoles; I do believe that it often requires a reload.

Yes I have gotten stuck quite a few times.
I've never gotten stuck due to mountain climbing though, usually in corners of caves - I usually can wiggle out, but not always.
I usually reload, because I am trying to make it through this playthrough without using any console commands.

If I get stuck outdoors I often fast travel my way out. Of course this won't work indoors or in combat. That's when us PC users get to use the console and console users (oh, the irony!) get to reload. :/

In any Bethesda game you could get stuck. If you can fast travel out of it.

In Morrowind I used to use intervention or recall or some other means of teleportation to get out or situations like that. Can't anymore with the butchery of the magic system.

Normally you cannot jump until you are touching the ground ~but one can potentially get stuck anywhere in the game with a crevice (even a tiny one) that's just deep enough, and has just the right angles that your PC never quite stops 'falling' into it. If you never touch the ground, you can't jump out of it. :(

Yep; also some areas don't have enough space to drop items (which can prevent FT as well. :()

Morrowind there were some steps with a sinkhole nearby in aldrun, got stuck 3-4 times. But then again, that was because I always tried to take the shortest way possible... Oblivion near some forts, and ah yeah... Plenty of getting stuck. Been stuck 3-4 times in skyrim, but ah, I managed to wiggle free 3/4 of the time, once was due to my attempting to cheat the game by wall walking. Basically, in fallout, I fell through the map in the Pitt twice. Pretty awesome, but ah yeah. Any Beth game, you deal with that. You try to glitch around or cheat the system, it has consequences.

If you get stuck in the landscape you should be able to fast travel to another location as long as there are not enemies around. If there are enemies around you will probably have to revert to your last save.
