Getting bored playng the bad guy

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:44 am

I wanted to see what people think I should do as ive just started my 2nd playthrough and getting im losing intrest at level8.

My first playthough I was a good guy helping the NCR (Normal mode), Took me 63 hours to complete the game and I loved it. I wanted my second playthrough (Hard mode) to be evil and help the legion ect. ect., and my third playthough I was going to stick it on Normal + hardcoe mode and play how I thought be best from previous playthroughs.

Im Level 8 on my second playthrough (Evil) now & TBH im getting sick of it. The NCR sending rangers out to get me just kill me quite easy, The odd Time I survived I had used all my supplys by the end of the fight. Because NCR is almost everywhere its just one big nightmare when trying to do a quest and its starting to bug me.

What im thinking is while im only Level 8 and not very far into the game, should I forget about it and start what I was going to do on my third playthrough? Now I understand the game more, I want to try hardcoe mode. I feel like playing the bad guy is to hard for me and its annoying.

If it's too hard or too annoying, or boring, try installing some mods or something to make it more interesting.

It's possible to be evil and working for the Legion without provoking the NCR to try and kill you. Think about the couple of instances where you ran into Legion spies infiltrating into NCR territory - you can be that way. That's how I'm playing my Legion playthrough. He won't directly attack the NCR until the final battle, though he might do plenty of sneak-attack kills since those don't effect your reputation.

@ Lespaul678, Im on the 360 matey.

@ Sojur, How you are playing it is it not like just playing the game normal i.e. repeating missions over and over until the end? I wanted to try and have a totally new experience by playing the bad guy so I have been killing anyone I dont like or has something bad to say to me. I could turn it down from hard to normal but I dont think it would make me change my feelings about it.

In the future, remember that you can use disguises to avoid engaging the NCR. Just dress us as them when you have to move through an NCR area.

Also, the NCR will warn you to up your rep with them before they send out hit squads. Once you get the warning, do an NCR mission or two and it will bide you some extra time before they come after you so you can level up.

Once you get to level 15-16, the hit squads aren't very tough, depending on your build (I love melee). . .unless you're playing on very hard.

There's a difference between playing evil and playing psychotic. The latter is fun, but it will not make the game easy for you.

I hope you don't mind if I piggyback on your thread, but I want to avoid getting a duplicate thread closed down...

I also have trouble playing a bad guy, but more for story reasons than gameplay reasons. I tried playing as a bad guy in Fallout 3 but ended up getting bored because I found my character's actions morally repugnant. There was nothing to identify with. It was funny the first few times I killed an annoying NPC and ate him, but when you get into helping slavers and selling children, it just starts to feel pointless and mean. By the same token, New Vegas offers entire quests and achievements aligned with the evil slaver faction, so I'd kind of like to see that part of the game. Has anybody come up with a Legion character you actually find sympathetic and interesting to play from a storytelling standpoint?

Best idea I've come up with so far: a woman descended from Great Khans killed at Bitter Springs, separated from the rest of the gang, who just wants to support the Legion because she hates the NCR and has an "only the strong survive" chip on her shoulder...

I never got into playing a legion guy. Being evil for the sake of being evil never appealed to me.

Being a bad guy for an important cause is different than being with the legion in this game. The game is pretty black and white.

NCR: Good for people in general but they're greedy and spread too thin.

Legion: These guys kill and enslave for fun. They probably kill kittens just for kicks too.

Mr. House: He's an important guy who has been locked in an enchanted tower but can't do much from there. He needs to be rescued by you so he can continue to rule things as he always has.

im pretty sure most people who play new vegas won't be able to side with the legion naturally. of course thats a given because theyre sociopaths.

BUT THATS WHAT ROLEPLAYING IS ALL ABOUT ...

you don't have to be a serial killer to be a bad guy. my guy is lvl 16 and i just got myself vilified by NCR by single-handedly wiping out their eastern mojave settlements. i roleplay "evil" but more in the self-serving, don't care who i hurt kind of way.

for now, i am allied with the legion, but their motivations and goals are just unrealistic and stupid, so unless i manage to force myself to see veni vidi vici to the end, i'm probably gonna have to go apesh!t in the legion camp one of these days. I was hoping to do it as I met the Legate.

Well said. It's odd that one would feel emotional about the fates of video game characters, but I'm guilty of it as well. I think that's why the first evil quest in the game is such a powerful one. The Goodsprings citizens are like the nicest people in the whole game, and once you kill them and get used to the fact that this is the kind of person your character is, it's easier from there on.

That said, the evil side of the game isn't quite as fleshed out, so there's a lot of opportunity for you to create your own motivations for your actions, which is the main draw of playing evil I think.

That, or you could just play a total psycho and kill everyone around you for no good reason... but like I said earlier, that will make the game very difficult.

It isn't easy to be evil either.

I've slaughtered several towns, done most of the legion missions, and killed everyone in sight on the strip. . .and am still a saint. You have to try really, really hard to be considered evil (IMO)

I'll mention its an odd quirk that you don't lose karma for murdering wanderers or traveling merchants. I guess they don't matter. . .

I to have decided to swing Legion on my next play through however I still plan on helping Goodspring.
After all even the Legion hates the Powder Gangers...

The Legion is not evil... They have thier own motivations, and there actions are... ahem rough, but finishing the game any way but Yes Man leaves you feeling a touch... dirty.

I also don't plan on killing the average NCR soldier during my Legion run. I will sneak past the common person, and attempt to assassinate the NCR leaders. After all those are the real targets :) .

Wish there wasn't a karma system, I don't want the game to tell me if I'm evil or not, especially since the game is all about moral grey-areas.

Your evil to one group, and good to another, Karma just breaks the 4th wall kinda, who is judging me?

I've seen this complaint a lot, but I don't understand it. My evil playthrough went as expected. My save game called me evil all the way through. The last time I looked, I was called "Evil Incarnate." I don't know what you guys are doing wrong (or right, rather), but it didn't happen to me.

It comes down to going places where you run into a lot of either Fiends or feral ghouls. Both those give good karma upon their death, and some locations/quests are just crawling with them. I just haven't had the time to fire up the GECK to find and correct that issue, hopefully some modder is able to (or already has) removed the karma hits for killing them.

I always find being evil tough in video games. It's a mental block for me. I tend to fall back into the old habits of helping people...must be a character flaw. :)

I think the problem with the game is that the karma is set up for you to follow the predictable story paths: side w/ the "good guys" and you tend to encounter Fiends and Ghouls and other enemies that give you good karma; side with the "bad guys" and you tend to run into situations that result in bad karma; but going around and randomly killing things, well YMMV....it should end up neutral, but there's far too many enemies that give you good karma for killing. Personally, I've always wondered why killing Ghouls results in good karma. Is the game rewarding you for "mercy killing"? Or are they just writing off Ghouls as the scourge of the earth?

I haven't tried killing any non-feral ghouls, but consider this:

1) I think (but haven't tested this) that the karma boost is only for killing feral ghouls and glowing ones (which are feral also anyway I think). I never did just kill one, but I assume the ones whom are wishing to pilot the rockets would give either negative karma or no karma hit or boost. I may see if I still have an old save in that building and kill one just to see now.

2) If they are feral, IMO it's a mix of a mercy killing and getting rid of a danger to pretty much anyone who isn't a ghoul. They can't be reasoned with, they just lunge in and attack, period. So thus it's good karma to kill something that might maul someone much less able to defend themselves later.

As an aside, other then snarky comments about how Raul smells or looks, I never see any strong negative reactions when I have Raul in my party. So, that to me also implies it's only the feral ghouls that are "evil" for karma purposes. If a ghoul still is lucid and has his wits, anyone who isn't a "ghoul bigot" will just judge them based on whom they are, not their race it seems like in the Mojave. (In fact, I think one of the comm/ranger stations had two Ghoul NCR soldiers? So although rare, apparently the NCR does allow ghouls to join their army and/or has ghoul citizens somewhere).
