There are functions to get left hand and right hand, but I just can't see anything for armour.

How am I supposed to make a jewellery display without that?

Yep, no ther way I could find when I hit this block a while ago. Seems when creating the game the devs didn't need a function to return an NPC's currently equipped item. That's where the SKSE team comes in, filling in the function gaps
