Someone posted the other day that they got lost on the way up there, following the single, clearly defined path.

Why stop at the tempel if you continue up the mounten to it wery top you get a enchantet pick axe, that dos x elemental damage and improves your smithing. I assume you can get to the top of the mouten as part of the main quest, but I have never gotten around to doing the main quest so I juat ran/jumped up the side of the mountan.

I seem to spend half my time mountaineering - I spent half an hour getting on top of bleak falls barrow just to see if any of the first chamber was rendered through the holes in the roof (it wasn't).

It's on the very, very top. Like. Go to the Throat of the World, and climb even higher, it's next to an ebony deposit.

Ive created the pickaxe vid for you, check www.youtube.com/toadbacon and it should be up very shortly, and will probably already be there by the time you read this

I couldn't figure out where the stairs were for the life of me. I literally spammed Y and scaled the side of the mountain. I ended up right in front of High Hrothgar.

This was on the first day too. I might've been among the first to be this stupid.

Where are the 7000 steps? I couldn't find them on my other character and accidentally climbed to the Throat of the World. I literally jumped from the very bottom to the very top(I stood on the peak).

Yeah, I didn't take the stairs, mostly because I didn't see them. But I found them when I reached the temple and ran into the troll on the way down...

This was my only problem when I started, what threw me off was watching the promotional videos, I'd assumed the start of the steps to be near Riverwood, when in fact they are on the other side of the mountain, you have to find a small village called Ivarstead, that's where the steps begin.

No, In http://uesp.net/wiki/File:SR-place-Ivarstead.jpg. The bridge in the top left hand corner takes you straight to the steps. If you travel to Ivarsted following the the signs, you'll come into the town from the brdge on the right.
