Getting NPC's to randomly walk around.

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:37 pm

Hey guys i've seem to have hit a road block. I've created and edited my nav meshes (took forever) but Im trying to create a bunch of NPC's that will just wander round the town i have created but so far i have had no luck, whenever i add a default sandbox AI package they just stand there.

Do i have to define a path for them or is there a way to get them to move about the environment at random.

Any help would be grate.

It's sometimes a good idea to just check your npc against a vanilla one that you know goes wandering around. You might not have selected the right package.

Saying that, your navmesh may not be working or finalised.

It helps to scatter various idle markers around. like the ones leaning on walls and tables and some just sit on the ground for them to mill around or work around. You might also experiment with creating packages that take them to specific areas of your town at particular times so they will wander in set areas at various times. The npcs that work in the castles, like the houseleepers have examples of those. Then there are also the patrol paths that are used with guards if you want them to follow a more set pattern. You can see examples of those on the guards in the game and I think there might be some tutorials out there to explain the patrols as well.

Sandbox packages also are generally limited to a certain area around the npc or a marker it is tied to. That area has to be large enough to let them wander as far as you expect them to. I found it to be more reliable to use several sandbox packages that trigger at different times during the day to have them go to another marker rather than have them hang around in one area all day. Then they do what the idle markers are set up for. Like lean against the post.
