Actually i have found that just shooting a DC in the head is not enough sometimes, a trick that seemed to help alot i learned in FO3 usning a .44 magnum to hunt DCs there. I brought the tactic to FONV and it still seems to hold true at least as much as i was able to test. This tactic is fro guns which does make it easier to kill a DC and as i have NO melee characters yet, still just can not seem to want a DC or any enemy for that matter close enough to me so that i can punch it in the face.
My tactic anyway.
I have shot DCs from front on right between the eyes knocked about 50% of its health off and really made it mad. What i found that is almost a guarantee to net at least 75% of thier health is to aim at the side of the head. I do not shoot at the head persay but at where the back of the jaw meets the neck. Place a round there and if it does not kill the DC instantly it will get you at least 75% of the health allowing for a paniced body shot to finish it off. I have to spend some time to watch thier paths, making sure to position myself in a spot where i get a full side sillouette, then aim for the sweet spot and let it rip. You can use this tactic for range kills or it also works if you can sneak up on them as in Dead wind cavern. I have killed DCs with a .357, .44 magnum, 5.56mm, 5mm, .308 JSP my personal favorite, or one can just brute force them with a .50 AMR.
Dealing with DCs is one of my most favorite things to do in the game, i can not tell you how many restarts i have because i missed, (i did not miss but the game decided i needed a statistic miss even with 100 guns). I just love it, it is as close to hunting as i remember it minus the peeing in a bottle freezing my ass off in a tree stand. Alot of times i will see just how close a 100 sneak character can get, i have been able to twist thier tails a few times which is pretty impressive and time consuming to sneak around undetected twisting DC's tail. i have found 6 places for DCs, vault 19, Sloan Quarry, the road north from Sloan, Dead wind cavern, and the quarry a bit north east of camp mccarren. If anyone knows of ay other places i have not listed please shout as i run out of DCs to hunt to quickly.
