Getting the Lucky Shades and Benny

Post » Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:07 pm

I'm at the part of Render Under Caesar where I had to check out that underground bunker and now have to return to Caesar. I haven't done it yet, as I know that when I do, I have to deal with Benny. My plan is to help him sneak out of there, though I know that will turn Legion hostile and I won't get the safehouse key. What I'm trying to figure out is if there is anything I can do for Legion that doesn't involve me talking with Caesar again, that isn't going to screw up my rep with other factions, but will improve my rep with them enough to get the safehouse key. Then I can grab the shades, grab Benny, and skedaddle. Is it possible? Thanks.

Benny is useless! Why save him? You never see him again. If you want the Karma give him a chance to fight in the arena.

Fine, no you can't get legion safehouse key if you save Benny. If you save Benny you go against direct order of Caesar and you will have to fight your way out of the fort. By that time you have the Mark of Caesar, so future crimes against the Legion won't be forgiven. Save Benny and you're screwed.

Yeah, but I'm sure there are other quests outside of the camp that can raise one's rep with Legion. I've already found Nelson, but I'd have to slaughter some NCR encampment, so that one is out. There has to be others, though.

Collect ncr dogtags for the dude at cottonwood cove.
I've considered doing this myself before. I always get the legion assault perk before I kill everyone.
That ones easy though, you just have to fool Caesar into thinking you blew up the weather station bunker.

The problem I always seem to have is that by the time I get there I've already recruited boone and I'd rather not lose him just to get some ghey shades.
I do plan however on not recruiting Boone for a very long time when I make my next dude, I want access to all four safehouses, I'm pretty sure it can be done, just let the fiends kill a butt load of troopers/collect the tags from camp guardian and I'm pretty sure you can get enough rep with the legion to get in without actually hurting your rep with the more important factions. ;)

If you save Benny, I am pretty sure you can't work with the Legion, because they will become hostile inside the tent and you will no longer be able to go inside and talk with Caesar without being attacked. Maybe if you use a Stealth Boy this is not the case, but I'm not sure. That's pretty much it.

I didn't know about that either, thanks.

Here's the deal with that. I actually understand why he tried to kill me...

Spoiler
twice was a little overkill, but anyway...

in his situation, I totally understand his motives. Neither NCR or Legion are an attractive option for independent people, and the whole iron-fist-ivory-tower approach of Mr. House is really just as bad. Like he says, Vegas has got to swing, baby. In a way, he was fighting for true independence. Even trying to kill me actually makes sense because...

Spoiler
Sure, he could have just taken the chip and let me live, but for all he knew I'd run to Mojave Express and tell him all about this guy who robbed me (which is what any rational person would do). With the description I could have given of Benny and his pals, it wouldn't be long before Mr. House knew Benny was making a play, which would ruin all of Benny's plans. Maybe I spend too much time hanging out with my Uncle Rico, but you can't make an omelet without breaking some legs...uh...I mean eggs. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's a weird thing to say when I'm the victim, but I have to look at the bigger picture.

the truth is, out of every major player in this game, I think Benny is the closest thing to a good guy for the people of NV. This is part of the reason I like the DLCs better than the vanilla quest...the character with whom I identify the most is also the one I'm supposed to hate. Not only that, but there is not much I can do to help him. The least (and, well, most) I can do is spare his life and give him his freedom, even if he doesn't resurface later in the game.

Spoiler
I agree with you in that, but still disagree. Even with a nice aproach he will still backstab you. The courier is probably the best "tool" New Vegas has, and yet he rejects to let the courier help him. The courier is probably the only chance he would have gotten to take out mr. house and put Yes man in control of new vegas.

Ok, this is going to sound weird...

Spoiler
I don't blame Benny for that, I actually blame the writing. When I came to realize the role that Benny plays in this game, I caught a case of WTF, doubly so since the guys who worked on this game also did Planescape:Torment which had the best-written characters out of any game I have ever played, period. His rejection of the Courier's help just didn't jive with the rest of his character. That is, he knew the odds were stacked against him, so he was willing to use any advantage at his disposal to succeed. Having the Courier, who is the only person to ever get into the Lucky 38, play double agent would have been a massive win for Benny. Once the Courier came around and saw his side of things, he should have jumped on that. From that point of the game on, I felt his storyline was a square peg being forced into a round hole...or maybe the other way around because he's no square, he's ring-a-ding, baby! I think the devs just underestimated their consumers' capacity for forgiveness. :)

Anyway, this is my first play through, and as an homage to Benny I plan to slip him the stealth boy and bobby pin, then later on take out House, just like he would have done. Hey, if the devs aren't going to write him into the final scene, I'll bring him there in spirit. :D
