Getting the most out of skyrim? Help?

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 12:21 am

So, I beat skyrim main quest, but I never used any of the skills like black smithing or anything, I really want to learn all of this stuff to get good weapons an armor, how should I do this? Or start a new game and redo it?

Just the main quest? What level are you? If your still somewhat low level you can begin training skills now. (The max level is 81 if im not mistaken, but they say theres a "soft cap" around 50 = Its harder to level after that since u need to use skills you dont realy use).

Level 19 is still rather low level xD You can start leveling smithing and "anything" now.

Smithing and alchemy you can buy from towns
Enchating you can get the black star and recharge an enchanted weapon for levels
Lockpicking just go around to dungeons, castles, and caves and lockpick chests and doors whenever you can
Sneaking, just sneak whenever you can :P

My favorite skills are:
Smithing, Alchemy, Enchanting, and lockpicking for all builds. I play Skyrim mainly because I love raiding and looting, so those 4 are perfect for me.

If you're playing a mage, just level up as many mage skills as you can and then maybe some of what I said.

I'm playing a dragon slayer at the moment, here are my skill focuses:
-One-handed
-Block
-Heavy Armour
-Lockpicking
-Speech
-Enchanting
-Alchemy
-Smithing

That's not too late to pick up some new skills IMO.

If you're interested in smithing, you can talk to Alvor in Riverwood or Adrienne in Whiterun. They both offer little smithing "tutorials" and will give you the raw materials you need to make a couple of low level items, and explain what you do at each crafting station.

If you're past all that and know what to do at the stations, but haven't taken any perks, just get all the hides/pelts that you can and iron ore. Make leather and leather strips at the tanning rack, make iron ingots at a smelter. You can get that stuff from hunting and mining, or just buy it (or buy the leather and ingots outright) if you have the money. Take it all to the forge and see what you can make with what you've got. If you're running the latest patches you won't be able to level up quickly by spamming large numbers of low value items, so make the most high value stuff you can with what you have on hand.

You will level up faster by making things than you will by just improving armor or tempering weapons. Without any perks what you can make will be limited to so don't waste your money on higher level materials until you have the perks that let you forge stuff from them.

Jewelry requires no perks, however, just the raw materials. Gold and silver ore/ingots are more expensive and harder to find, but if you can get hold of the Transmute spell you can use it to change iron ore into silver ore and silver ore into gold ore. If you are finding gemstones in loot, save them and use them for jewelry when you have the necessary silver and gold... jewelry with gemstones is more valuable than just plain gold/silver items and will level you up faster when you make it.

Go around the towns and buy out all of the supplies you can for smithing, then switch to the next town, buy it all out, repeat.

To forge those items yourself you will need to level ALL the way up in smithing, Daedric requires 90 and Dragon 100 if I'm not mistaken. You cannot forge items from scratch without the perks for the materials involved, and you can't get the perks until you reach a certain level. You will have to either purchase your level advances from trainers or work with lower level materials until you level up high enough to take perks for better types of gear. Or just wait until you start finding them in loot, which will probably not happen until your character levels up a bit more overall.

That said, ANY type of armor can be improved until it hits the armor cap, at which point it provides as much protection as anything else available regardless of the materials used. But you still need to level up your smithing skill to get to the point where you can improve things to that point, or at least take the perks for the material you want to wear.

You can also use temporary buffs like potions and enchanted gear that you take/equip while improving weapons and armor. Potions can be made or purchased (look for Fortify Smithing potions at every alchemy shop you pass) and look for gear with Fortify Smithing enchantments at every vendor who sells/buys apparel or armor.

Spoiler

I can tell you what ingredients to look for to make the potions, but if your alchemy level is low you may be better off just buying them when you can find them. OTOH if you want to level up in Alchemy, making potions regularly will help with that. Lemme know if you want to know the ingredients.

Also if you have finished the MQ, you can go back to the Throat of the World and climb all the way to the top peak - there is no path, you just have to get up there by jumping and climbing until you find a way - and get a special item there called the Notched Pickaxe. It is enchanted to buff your smithing when you have it equipped like a weapon. That will help with any improving of armor and weapons you want to do no matter what level you're at. Plus if you like to mine ore, you can just carry it with you and use it like a regular pickaxe when you need one. There are also some ore veins up there you can mine, you won't have the perks for those materials yet but you can make ingots and hange on to them or just sell them to get money to buy more stuff you can actually work with.

Pull out your weapon, then sheath it, a guard will approach you and you'll have to pay a fine.
-Whiterun's smith is right inf ront of the main gates, and The companions have a smith as well.
-Riverwood has a smith
-Solitude has a smith ont he second floor, right up the stairs
-Windhelm has one to the right of the main gate.

I've played it through to the end a few times, my advice take all the quests of one city at a time, make this your home base.

There are blacksmith vendors in Riverwood, Falkreath, Dawnstar, Solitude, and Windhelm. Two each in Markarth and Whiterun, actually three in Whiterun if you count both people at Warmaidens. The guy in the Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun doesn't buy/sell raw materials for smithing, but he does buy and sell weapons and armor. General merchants and Khajiit caravans sell the gear as well as raw materials, altho not as much of the latter as you will get from a blacksmith.

And you don't have to buy any of it if you are willing to hunt for the leather and mine the ore yourself. There are mines all over Skyrim and numerous veins just sticking out of the ground. They are easy to spot if you pay attention and once you see one you will know what to look for when you are out and about.

Believe me, there is no shortage of smithing materials in Skryim if you have either the cash or the willingness to go get them by your own efforts.

(Unless of course you JUST got the perk for the armor you've been wanting to wear for ages, and finally have the money to buy the last couple of ingots you need to make it, in which case nobody in Skyrim will have any for sale. :P )

Oh my. Have you never taken a perk? Then at level 19, you probably have quite a few available. The first perk in Smithing is pretty much a gimme - most of the first perks in any skill are, IIRC - and you should be able to take it regardless of where your current Smithing level is.

Every time you level up, you get to increase either your Health, Stamina, or Magicka... which you probably know already. But you also get the option to take one perk in any skill provided you have a high enough level in that skill to qualify for it.

Go into your skills menu when you are NOT leveling up, and you see all those little "constellations" with things like Archery, Alchemy, Smithing, Destruction, etc. underneath them? Each constellation contains the perks available in each skill, and each star in each constellation is one perk. The star at the bottom is the first perk, and can usually be taken right away. If you click on it and it doesn't let you take the perk, it means your level in that skill isn't high enough yet. Your current level and the required skill will be displayed when you are looking at the "star" to see what perk it's for.

Read here for more info:

Follow the links on that page for more detailed info on the perks and their requirements in the skills you want to focus on now, or have already leveled up in.

Wow, yeah start doing the Faction quests like the College of Winterhold, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, etc. Go dungeon diving. Look for all the words of power. That'll take up a ton of time until Dawnguard comes out.

The manual. http://cdn.steampowered.com/Manuals/72850/skyrim_gfw_manual-07.pdf?t=1331917656

Its allways a good idea to read the manual in a game this big. I myself recommend the "Offical game guide" too if your still feeling lost, but aloot of players feels like thats cheating (Its a extremly large 655 page book that says allmost everything the game contains, atleast at release. It is however quite expensive).

Edit: If your playing a Assasin they tend to be somewhat weak in combat once noticed, depending on how you build him (Consider it a advanced class perhaps). I would suggest starting out with a warrior or a warrior/mage hybrid (Easy to play, hard to master, loads of fun).
