Getting the Noob Feeling back.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:13 pm

So I've been pretty bored lately, and I figured I would try and boot up Morrowind or Fallout and try to capture the feeling I used to have when I first started playing these games. That general elation and wonder at the games that nowadays I only slightly get a taste of when I try to force myself to be stupid in regards to the games. Naturally I failed at it, and I never got much of that old feeling.

So I start this topic to ask the rest of you if any of you have ever successfully gotten that feeling back, or something similar, and if so, how in the hell did you do it? The best way I could come up with was to just try and forget everything about the games, but for me this has failed miserably because I've forgotten absolutely nothing since I was about 14, which was when I started playing Morrowind.

Get a PS3 and play Demon's Souls. It's one huge learning process, and you'll never really not be a noob.

I know what you mean, I can't capture the newbfeel either, though that's not always a bad thing. I'd hate to forget everything I know about WoW for example, and in RPG's I've played before I enjoy building the ultimate badass of a character, knowing where most stuff is helps with that. For example, I was playing through Jade Empire as a good guy for the first time, and while I knew almost every detail of the game, I kept finding new stuff here and there and it was really cool, it felt new and exciting but familiar at the same time.

Demon's souls, a game that rewards you for beating it by upping the difficulty by 40%. Demon's souls will make you feel like a noob alright. Just wait to you see some of the bosses. A lot of them amount to "Oh [censored], how on [censored] earth do I kill that? HELP ME INTERNET!"

I tried this for Fallout 3, and it semi-worked by using FWE mods. It kind of changed alot, so when I played like I normally do, I ended up getting smacked. xD

That's just what I mean, you have to be able to learn to play this. Just like a real noob.

I would so love to (refer to the mod forum...). This and Morrowind are the games that always feel new, due to me never choosing the same mod loadout. ^_^

You can't really get back the first-time feeling, but you might try self-enforced gameplay alterations. For example, back in the SNES days I'd replay Secret of Mana without using any magic (aside from times where it's necessary, of course), or do a pistols-only run of Resident Evil 4.

I'd play something but I don't have the time to truly indulge in gaming hours right now so I prefer to avoid it completely. If I did play I would play Morrowind or Fallout, too.

And then when you're playing online, and you just entered an area. Suddenly, something seems wrong, and you see "Grada112 has Invaded!" A Black Phantom is now coming for you from the entrance to the area, ready to kill you and controlled by a human being.

Introduce someone to the game - it's like noob via osmosis or something :) Got my little sister to play Fallout 3 and watching her ogle at it reminded me how much I enjoyed it before I started critiquing it or comparing it to other games.

No other suggestions for SSF4?

Its a forever learning game. Gotta learn your opponent on the fly. Gotta be able to play mind games. Simple controls (You move your character left right and up down and theres only two buttons, punch and kick) but very difficult game.

I wish more people played it

There's more than two attack buttons, there's 3 different types of both punch and kick and there's also focus attacks and Ex moves.

Yeah, there are 3 punches and 3 kicks. Light, Med and Hard. EX, focus and grabs dont count as buttons. They are combinations of buttons.

But, you can play with only two buttons. Sometimes when I play all I need is the light kick and light punch. Thats my punch, my kick and my grab (LP + LK) in it. But that's Bison for you.

I think Daigo is the only guy who's not a Noob at the game.

I kind of had that feeling when I started playig Deus Ex a year or so ago. And Beyond Good And Evil a couple of weeks back. It's been ages since I've played a adventure/platformer.
