Getting tired of Pink

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 2:10 am

Been playing since 11/11/11 (I stop occationally to eat, sleep, work, etc.). Anyway about a mouth ago a texture on a statue was missing and everything was bright pink on it. Kinda cute, but I really didn't think much of it.

I now have many large save files as I have been role-playing several different characters. I have noted now, especially in the last week, that I'm getting Pink textures on lots of stuff after about an hour of playing. One cave I walked into was nearly all pink inside.

No changes have been made to my PC and the only thing I can think of is the large save files maybe missing something up.

Is that possible? Is this a known issue? What else could it be?

I would hate to delete the files but I suppose I could save them in some other directory somewhere if that is the problem.

Thanks!

Have you tried 1.4 beta? Might free up enough resources to let your missing texures in.

STEAM auto updates I assume, so I suppose I have the latest, though I do not have it set up to use the beta patch.

What would cause resources to be used up now when they were not before? Is that caused by the save files?

1.4 is a beta; you must opt-in via Steam's settings to receive it.

A bug is what consumes resources; the more you play, the more it eats!

EDIT: My game was totally broken and utterly unplayable but the 1.4 beta patch fixed it! :)

The release cersion should be out within a week but I suggest trying the latest beta: it's already been updated once to fix bugs. For me, it fixed the game!

I assume there are some instructions somewhere telling how to get STEAM to use the beta update right. I'll look.

Steam menu -> Steam -> Settings

Near the bottom, "Beta participation"

Click the "Change...." button and select "Skyrim Beta"

Oh, and restart Steam afterwards. That should trigger the download.

It might restart itself; in that case, you needn't restart it.

Ok I did the update. Loaded my current game. Did the Elder Tree quest. Killed a dragon there ... and for the first time after 100's of dragons got no soul. The dragon just lays there ... dead. I could loot it, but no soul.

This have never happened before. Is this a known 1.4 bug? I've been trying to find a thread where people are talking about this patch but can't find one.

Might be a dragon respawned by a quest; you can only have it's soul once!

i get the same and had the same problem with dragons not switching over to flame out once dead.i deleted two gig of game saves and started again and that fixed it then but it has come back in "Skyrim wars IV"

i'm hoping it's just the mod as only that mods dragons do it.

You might have no option but to delete.

Dragons that have respawned at static locations (e.g. word walls) will not dissolve or give a dragon soul. Whether or not this is intended behavior, it has been this way since launch.

As for your pink textures, are you using any mods? What game version are you using? 1.3.10.0 added large address aware functionality, allowing the game executable to access more than two gigabytes of RAM. This will help stability as well as reduce instances of texture corruption. The beta doesn't do anything specific to address this issue, as it is not something that has been widely reported since the 1.3.10.0 update.

The second beta build (1.4.20.0) hasn't had any serious issues reported that haven't been attributed to mod usage. It's highly likely that the release build will be very similar to 1.4.20.0 (if it is changed at all).

Check out the beta 1.4 forum section. Theres a long list of info there.

From my own perspective, ive seen a bug fix for the markarth cidhna bounty bug and a noticable increase in FPS all around.

I was using whatever version STEAM loaded as I never told it not to. Right now I'm using the Beta.

I do believe I did kill that dragon before. It's the one that guards the wall in the area of the steam pits. That may explain it.

I'll also go ahead and move a dozen of my large game saves out and store them somewhere else.

Thanks all for your help.

Just an update.

Nothing has changed.

I have running the STEAM Beta patch and I moved about all my saved games to another non-game directory. I am still running into the bright pink texture a couple times each time I play.

I guess what bothers me is I never saw this at all until round the time the 1.3 patch was done. Prior to then I never saw this. Now I get it regularly and it seems to be getting worse.

Question: I have 4 GB of RAM on my PC and I have the latest patches. Is there something I am supposed to change in the game settings in order for it to use more than the default 2GB of RAM?

Another question (consider it a bonus): Mods. I have added a few mods in the last month. Mainly just to fix the head textures and give some better detail to cirlets. That's about it really, I haven't really added any heavy graphic mods yet. Could just a few small mods cause this problem?

Thanks.

They added default support to use more than 2GB of memory a couple of patches back. You don't need to do anything now for it to be put to use so if you're using the old Skyrim4GB mod, please remove it.

Honestly, disabling ALL mods should have been your first step in troubleshooting your pink texture problem.

Pink textures are defaults for situations where you have exceeded your video ram by often larger margins and the game is unable to support the settings/texture resolutions you're asking it to do. Turn down the settings, get a stronger video card with more memory or heel-back the amount of heavy texture mods you may be using. I don't need to know what your video card is even to be able to make these declarations, this is pretty much what happens when your settings are too high for the video card's abilities. Focus on editing a few things that'd reduce the needs of its vram and find a program that's relevant for your card to show you how much of its memory is currently being used by Skyrim and aim to get beneath it or at least bordering on it.

Hints though: Many forms of high-end AA settings will gobble up tramendous amounts of it, for testing just try turning that off once you have a vram monitor and see if that's enough, then adjust accordingly.

YOU NEED TO VERIFY CACHE. Updating does not replace potentially corrupted files / textures.

My PC stats are:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Memory: Dual Channel 4 MB DDR2
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce N250GTS Twin Frozr 1G

Not the best I know, but I am playing on a standard 19" monitor at 1280x1024 res, so I would have assumed this would be enough. I believe I have AA set on only 2. I really don't have that much in mods, especially in textures. In fact if I check the total size of my DATA folder it isn't very big at all.

Well, when the STEAM mod manager thing (whatever it's called) comes out I was planing on taking off all my mods and reloading them using that, just so I can manage them a little better. Maybe then I can trim a little more fat off the mods.

Thanks

Seriously, this is pretty simple to trouble-shoot. Turn off all your texture mods via Nexus Mod Manager (if you installed them manually then you shouldn't have done and you're going to have to go through some pain to work out which files belong to which mod and delete them). Then restart the game, go into the "pink cave" and see if it's pink. If it is, then you have a Skyrim issue. If it's not, then you have a mod or a system issue.
