Im getting [censored]*ng tired of reinstalling the 4GB exe u

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 7:41 pm

Seriously what the [censored] is wrong with Bethesda / steam each time I install this 4GB patch it works 100% with no crashes / no missing textures / no invisible heads and hands. And then they patch the game and I get an error saying that I cant launch game. Are they really so [censored] that they cant let people play the game their way.

You know whats wrong with skyrim. STEAM IS A PIECE OF SH*T.

The latest patch incorporate 2GB aware flag, you don't need the patch any more. Then again I am still playing 1.1 and have set the flag myself with explorer suite.

Cheers!

Well -- the latest patch was to add support for the switch in the .exe itself so that there would no longer be a need to have a third party mod\patch to apply it --- So makes sense that trying to load a mod\patch to an already implemented function may cause problems if they allow it to load !!

I would think if this wasnt the third time this has happened due to the awesome auto patching of steam.

1. time I took it pretty casual still use some mean words towards bethesda.

2. time I just thought they were being stupid for making it harder for user to fix the game.

3. time I just about had enough of this DRM [censored].

No it doesn't.. this is a 3rd party issue... it needs to be directed to the person who instructed him to install the 3rd party hack. It is not Bethesda's issue at all.

And even then it's not a 3rd party issue. Rather it's a user error because he's trying to run a 4GB patch on top of an already 4GB enabled EXE.

Clearly a PEBKAC error considering what the latest patch does.

Why I know what I have to do, I know how to do it.

This is a general complaint at the piss-poor management and patching of their game.

In my opinion this belongs on every board in here just to show these people that screwing customers over by "patching" the game is pretty stupid.

Why didnt they just use 4 GB support from the beginning? I have nothing but praises for the game except some slight personal preferences which could be better but they way have ported this game into the PC marked is just horrible.

It has nothing to do with Steam really.

It -was- a program that was designed to access the exe and since the version number updates with the patch, it can technically no longer find the exe it's designed for.

Hence the need to get the updated version of the utility. Just like you have to get the updated version of SKSE.

edit: And as pointed out, it's no longer needed.

The game patches automatically. If you don't like that you go into offline mode or keep backups every update.

Simples.

But .... its still user error, how on earth can it be Steam and DRM fault to do exactly what its designed to do, it doesn't know about 3rd party additions, it did what it said on the tin, kept your game up to date and this particular update has been made clear it would and will be LAA addition, and in having that update you stop using the 3rd party 3gb version.

Doesn't need a thread with censored titles and mass anger when in actually fact everyone else noticed the update, check what it was, and stopped uding 3gb fix. PLus the fact that there are multiple threads talking about it.

It hasn't broken anything, user error.

And yes, you stay in off-line mode ... that's all I ever do, then go "online" when im aware through forums a new patch is up and that's how I have control on deciding when I want the patch. And I also make a duplicate copy of the game folder prior to an update.

I'm astonished that you actually blame "these people" for your own direct actions. It reads like you are complaining that the fix you needed to manually apply is now unnecessary, but that they didn't tell you LOUDLY ENOUGH.

Do yourself a favour: In the steam client: Right click Skyrim->properties->Update Options->"Do not update automatically".

Then press Alt-F4 while in this window.

Actually no. "Do Not Update Automatically" only really applies to games you are not playing. As soon as you try to launch a game while in online mode it will try to update it if one is available. The intent of this feature is so games you don't play currently (or maybe never again) don't simply update & waste your bandwidth. For some it might be preferable that this happens, so next time they do play said game it's ready to go.

I usually sit in Offline mode until *I* chose to update something. It's easy for me as I only have two Steam titles and a couple of demos. Those with a larger collection can benefit from "do not update automatically" in the following way...

. Assuming you're in offline mode
. Set do not update automatically for Skyrim
. Go online and let your other title(s) update automatically
. Do NOT run Skyrim at this stage, it won't update.
. Pop back into offline mode
. Play your update game
. Play your NOT updated Skyrim
. You will likely need to set "Do not update automatically" once more if you go online again.

This is basically what I did when I needed to update one title but not Skyrim.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Damnit, you're absolutely right. This game vs that patcher (and hayden's ultra wide fix) are the first I'd needed to use such a feature but since I was traditionally booting from the 4GB method it wasn't tripping that thing but yah that's how it operates after all. Weak sauce but thanks for the heads up.
