gezz no fast-travel characters really are fun!

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 7:21 am

recently created a new character (well very similar to my main characters) that will not utilize the fast-travel (which is very usable should I say!). I do have to say that it is really fun! It adds this level of immersion into the game that a normal character would miss. Just think of the beautiful views of the landscape and the funny random encounters!

Anyway I greatly encourage you people to also do such a character

Yeah, you definitely miss out on a lot if you fast travel everywhere.

My current level 36 character hasn't fast travelled. Didn't start out with this intention but so far, I just haven't felt like fast travelling.

Been finding quite a few things I missed with previous characters and having a good time doing it.

Same with me. I'm also using no compass and no crosshair, I have the health/stam/magicka bars on but turned the opacity waaay down.

Is there a way to turn the compass off if you aren't on PC? I really wish I could play without the compass, but I can't find a way to do it that doesn't turn off everything else along with it.

Welcome to the FT-free Club! Somewhere around here we have a sticker to give you but, umm, we've never been terribly organized.

See the only problem i have with not fast traveling is walking back and forth. If i walk the path once and see all the sights, then why would i want to do it again? So i just can't seem to get myself to not fast travel.

My name is Raspy and I fast-travelled today. I've been really good with this character but it was almost time to go to work and I really wanted to sell some loot. I feel terrible about it. One day at a time, I suppose.

No fast travel combined with Wars in Skyrim (Dark Age Mode) produces some of the best moments ill have in a game. Utter carnage and hilarity

I've pretty much based the character purely on the random encounters he has come across due to the lack of fast travel. Really fun, especially with mods that enhance the randomness of what you come across. I love coming across something that my character clearly cannot take on such as a high level mage or something, only for this high end enemy to be wiped by a randomly passing dragon or another wild creature.

lol throw in a mod that adds parties of adventurers for extra kicks. 5 (Badass) Adventurers v a fort of bandits v 2 Master Mages v a Dragon (with stronger dragon mod) v me, or something similar has happened on more than a handful of occasions thanks to no fast travel

I use fast travel to simulate an 'imaginary carriage travel' system. I roleplay that carrriage-less places like Dawnstar and Riverwood have carriage travel.

If my character wants to quickly travel from, say, Septimus Signus's outpost in the Sea of Ghosts down to Riverwood he would travel on foot from Septimus Signus's cave to Winterhold, fast travel from Winterhold to Solitude, take the carriage from Solitude to Whiterun, then fast travel from Whiterun to Riverwood.

For me, this is a nice compromise on those days when I want to accomplish quest-related goals but don't have much time to play.

I had a lot of fun at first with no fast travel (including no carraiges). Then after about 40 hours and running back and forth I got really tired of it and started to use carraiges. I am still refraining from fast travel because it truly does make me more immersed in the game but I couldn't go much longer with running back and forth across the map.

There's one thing about no fast travel period... If you buy a horse and forget where you leave it, good luck finding it!

My rules for fast travel:

1. Under normal gaming conditions, fast traverl by carriage only. If the population centers of Skyrim offer these services, I might as well use them. Fast travel otherwise might as well be a teleport, as it completely removes any experience the player should have walking between points A and B.

2. Fast travel to a very nearby location to get unstuck from geography. This has only happened to me twice now. If nothing is near, reload the most recent save.

3. Experimenting with getting around a major glitch. This has happened a few times, and an approach I very much recommend if needed. I also keep 3 game saves as well as the autosaves, just in case.

I've done Winterhold to Windhelm too many times than I'd prefer to admit, but it certainly does add an element of appreciation for little things they added into the game. I'll come across a waterfall, acknowledge the view, and carry-on.

Sure, the random encounters become predictable after awhile, I use caravans when I am able, but the scenic aspect of Skyrim is an element that should not be missed out on entirely due to fast travel options.

this is why i like the Fast travel way gates idea from the game jam video... it encourages exploration rather then giving the luxury of the map travel.

anyway more on topic: agreed it is amazing when you don't fast travel the amount you see the things that come up could keep you occupied for a good long while

To me it would be stupid to lose your horse for that reason. Just go to the stable where you bought the horse and then fast travel there. You effectively didn't fast travel anywhere and you can role play that your horse wandered back to where his orignal home had been. Problem solved.
