GLITCH Boone's combat is messed up

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 9:05 pm

As well as Boone, I want to know why the player character has no head tracking. Fallout 3 was the same, and it spoils third person. I can find no way to turn it on in the GECK, but I'm sure in Oblivion the player character took an interest in the world around him/her - looking at dead bodies, passing people etc.

Well, even though I like Boone, gave him the Gobi Campaign rifle and .308 JSP rounds, I'm gonna let him go.

So who's the next beat human companion as far as straight killing goes?

If you ran the Steam files confirmation utility after patching, then you will have new .ini files...

I have done this already, as I do every time Steam installs a new patch. The ini files are never 'updated' in terms of date. Neither the ones in the MyDocuments folder or the ones in the actual Steam/commonapps-NV directory. Which is interesting. I wonder if they're supposed to be updated. They may not have made any non-hidden changes to them, after all.

So who's the next beat human companion as far as straight killing goes?

Raul. Same guns stats as Boone, so you can give him the Gobi/ammo if you want. Give him Boone's hat, and Raul should also have the bugged stat addtions after a while. :P But Arcade with a gauss rifle is also awesome.

Actually this Companion Combat problem is quite common. It happens in OB as well. I haven't got time to research it now but the Devs should be well aware of it.

My major complaint is that he still switches to melee and then won't switch back until I make him.

I guess such glitches are common to the engine but inconsistent across various systems. No companion has ever had this combat/holster thing for me in 300+ hours of playtime, until 1.2. Computers, don't you love them.

Companions, for me, like to briefly equip the melee weapons a lot, but 95% of the time it's only for a second and they switch back again on their own. But again, since the new patch (for me), Boone in particular does seem a bit more inclined to remain in melee/actually attack with it, than before.

I have to take Oh Baby! away and the machete. He used to stick to the Sniper Rifle and then exclusively, the All-American, which was his favorite but no more. A sniper who won't snipe...wth?

It's got to be fixed; that's all there is to it. :)

I have a look at that video and Boone was doing that before the patch. That was my last game.

With this game I'm playing after the patch I have Veronica with me she not that aggressive or she needs glasses. But when she sees the enemy well there goes their head.

I give up on the GECK, it has a script saving error for me. I'm sure there's a way around it or a 3rd party program way around it etc. but I'm tired of glitches/bugs + I don't like mods that are dependent on other installs to work (all my mods are very simple ones). So I'm going back to 1.1 and modding some of the 1.2 weapon changes into it, until the hoped for next patch. :P I don't get the quest fixes but eh I can live with it, never had many issues w/those anyway. If anyone ever figures the Boone/combat stuff out, I'd be happy to be a testing guinea pig, just send me a PM someday.

For the video of his messed up combat, was the game in hardcoe mode or regular?

I started a new game and hired Boone last night. He just stands there like a post, staring straight ahead when idle. I've made about a dozen followers and none of them ever did that. Didn't have time to try him in combat yet.

The .ini settings that I think might be new pertaining to head tracking (since they don't appear in the NV geck .ini settings) are "hidden" and not exposed by default. If you want to generate an .ini file that includes them, follow my directions in this post:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1149951-hidden-ini-settings/page__p__16820668#entry16820668

My guess is the devs really don't want users messing around with the settings since many of the fields in the default .ini are deprecated and neither Fallout 3 or New Vegas uses them (they're from Oblivion). A lot of the fields you see in "tweak" guides are ironically not even used in the game which further proves they are pretty useless since the default settings are pre-tweaked (don't mess with them unless you want to eff up your game, the tweakguide is sooo wrong and don't get me started on the 'ini optimizer' over at the nv nexus!)

In the video, that's non-hardcoe, Very Hard.

side note:discovered that companion stats seem hardcoded into savegame files or something. When I reverted to 1.1 .esm/.exe, in my most recent post-patch saves (from the new game I'd started) they still had the new 7STR etc. stats. I had to start yet another new game/saves and in those they were back to 10STR. Y'all longtime fallout experts probably knew that already, but it was new to me. :)

I don't mess with the ini files. I think I tried a few such tweaks back in version 1.0 but they didn't seem to do much for me, so I reverted them all back. It would make sense they don't want people messing with them too much.
