Gobi Sniper Rife

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:47 pm

Is there any other way to get Gobi Sniper Rifle? The gun case at snipers' nest requires 100 lock skill to unlock.

Right now, I am at level 25 and my lockpick skill is 15 hehe.

I spent most of the skill points on explosions, speech, guns, barter.etc :D

Playing on hardcoe mode, more lockpick skill is not really needed.

Unless you are on a PC, you may have to do it the hard way.

Use your remaining SP to get LP as high as you can, take Comprehension to boost the book; take chemically-enhanced version of Mentats to enhance PER; wear apparel that boosts Lockpick; take Tag! Perk for +15SP and add it to LP.

I can foresee that with Comprehension the minimum you will need is 70: 100 - 20(Book) -5(Apparel) - 5(Mentats) = 70. Tag! brings that substantially further down to 55, so only 40 SP left to spend.

EDIT: With comprehension, get the SP books that are permanent and you will decrease this further by 16SP meaning using the above, you only need 34 LP - or in your case an extra 19 SP, two levels. Thats a very hard-headed attempt to getting LP as low as possible however.

Depends how badly you want or need it.

A lockpick of 80 is recommended for any build, with the Comprehension perk you can use the lockpick magazine to boost to 100 when you run into the occasional VH Lock...

It may also help of you go skill book hunting, there should be 4 of the lockpick ones giving you a 12 point boost without the Comprehension perk and 16 points with.

You could also leave the most overpowered gun in the case too. But still should get your lockpicking up.

But if you need it, Dogmeat in FO3 could get into locked things (EG: Victory Rifle), haven't tried it, but can a dog companion get into cases in FO:NV?

Coyote Tobacco Chew, Mentat, Party Mentat, Hat, Magazine with Comprehensio, Vault Utility Suit etc.

Add in skill books, I think you just need like 56 points in Lockpick ( minus whatever you start with).

Lockpicking is overrated, and so is the Gobi. The regular Sniper Rifle has comparable DPS and you can silence it.

There are a few nice unique items here and there that LPing gets you, and you can bypass the stupidly buggy "run of death" to meet the Boomers for the first time. Honestly though, you can live without it. Repair, Speech, and Science are FAR better skills to raise first before you look at taking Lockpicking past 25-50.

Boone should have the key to the chest or can tell you where he threw the key with a speech check. That would have made a lot of sense.

I agree that the regular sniper rifle is better than Gobi for sniping. But, I used the Gobi as close-mid range assault rifle because of the lower AP cost. For that use the Gobi is better than the All-American for taking down enemies faster.

The Gobi fires slightly faster, has an extra round and deteriorates slower than the standard sniper rifle. Also has a lower AP cost.

On the flip side, it does slightly less damage and can't be modded (specifically, silenced).

Anyway, back to the question at hand...if you really want the Gobi, and aren't playing on PC, as far as I know, you need to get your lockpick up to a 100, or be able to push it up to a hundred with help in order to get into the footlocker.

Let me point out that while it is a nice weapon, I wouldn't say it is worth spending all these points in LP and perks etc... to get it unless you have nothing else you want to dump those points/perks into. A regular sniper rifle isn't that inferior, plus you can add a silencer to a regular SR which you can't do to the Gobi afaik. I carry both, but end up using the silenced SR far more than the gobi because it doesn't draw aggro. i.e. try using the Gobi at Quarry Junction and you will have 10 DeathClaws after you, where the sniper rifle draws just the one (or sometimes two) which you can handle

Actually, there is quite a few quest require high lockpick to solve them peacefully.
The only certain way to get a 12.7mm SMG needs 100 lockpick.
Gobi also enjoy high durability, who cares about noise when you are in a open battle? Or far enough?

You can live without it, for sure, like all skills, but it is far from overrated

Nope, there is a key for that gate which has the 12.7mm SMG behind it. LPing just lets you avoid the fight to get to the key (which I think was against Legendary Nightstalker + friends if I remember right).

The first thing I put my level up points into is Lockpick, It can makes things a million time easier sometimes. I always make a sniper character and therefore always carry the Gobi, Ratslayer (for at night) & a normal sniper rifle with all mods for silent kills. Anyway I usually have the gobi by the time I get to level 8/9.
