Oh my god! Walked into Shimmer Mist Cave for the first time.

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 11:49 pm

Ok, I realised this place was still to be cleared. Having recently heard a guard mention seeing a creature there he has never seen before, I felt suddenly more interested to head there ASAP. Right away, I think "hmmm, ok, not much going on here." I enter the second area, suddenly I'm met with real challenge, with stronger Falmer and some very scary scorpion type things. I used almost every health potion I had on these things. Now, the main reason why I post. I open a golden door - a very large door - and I spot some Falmer Shadowmaster coming at me. He is VERY strong. Take a whole lot of hits. Hits me twice and I'm dead, so I have to use the shield. I hear this noise coming from behind. I turn. I literally CRAPPED myself. A huge GOLDEN mech man of a monster! Jesus this thing destroyed me and has even scared me from reloading my save!

Yeah when I joined the Companions, my first random quest was to clear out that cave. I was level 12. I was like, seriously?

Shimmer Mist was my first random dungeon after Bleak Flats. I was on my way to Whiterun and figured I'd stop at a dungeon along the way and picked Shimmer Mist. It was very difficult for me (very new to the game too, with this being only my second dungeon in Skyrim ever. I was not intended for my character to use a bow, but the only way I could finish the end section was with a bow and stealth.

I was like that when I first ran into a Centurian Master, big bustling blowing hot steam at you, I found its better if he is dead before he got close to me, fired a whole lot of arrows from the shadows while sneaking, did the trick! I have explored so much of the landmass and cleared so many dungeons that I have stopped for now, I mean I haven't even started the MQ let alone Thieves guild, Companions, Mages, or DB, if I keep going at this rate there will be no uncleared dungeons for them to send me too lol. 65 hours in level 25 and barely scraqed the surface well not exploring wise but quest wise...

Yeah, I'm playing MASTER and I'm level 41. I just cannot finish this section. It's far far far too difficult. The shadowmaster guy alone is too tough. Never met anything as tough as him yet, not to mention the Centurion that can even kill me within 2 seconds a mile away using frost mist or whatever. Lol. I may need to leave and come back with new potion stock and an ally. I wonder if when you alert the guy you can run out and have him follow you, then get the guards around whiterun to deal with the punk. haha.

hehe, the caves get reoccupied over a couple of game days or so, think its a random time before they get reoccupied, but someone else mentioned it on here, so I went and checked the first cave I ever did, and it was full again

LOL

My story was close but as I was playing a sneaky type of character, I always see them before they see me. I also had that WTF-moment but I didn't crap my pants

I tried to sneak attack them with an arrow, hide and repeat. This was my only chance to defeat them at that point. I killed the falmer with this process (took forever) but the centurion was mathematically impossible to be finished by this method because of how early in the game that was. I decided to leave and return later.

I forgot about this so I returned much later and I killed it with 2 or 3 arrows, I think.

Ah yeah, I remember that centurion. However, it wouldn't attack me and just kept trying to hump me, so i just killed it without it attacking me.

Thank you for sharing this. For some reason I ignored that cave from the start and now I am lvl 42.

Having switched the difficulty on master recently and after reading all the above comments I decided to go prepared, so I took with me a bunch of resist potions, a few damage Health (50 points) poisons, Mjorn the Lioness (wife) and also used the shout that brings a dead female warrior from Sovngarde. So the fight was feeling slightly hard as I had to withdraw weapon and heal behind a pillar at some point.

I must admit that if I had not read your comments, I would walk to a certain death, specially after getting all cocky for killing those Chaurus thingies.

Shimmermist was an early dungeon for me too, and actually I think I had a harder time with the 3 chaurus down in the pit than the last part. Chaurus are very hard to sneak up on when your sneak skill is low, and I'd always wind up with all 3 of them chasing me. And they hit a low level light armored character hard.

That centurion, when he chases you, just run down the passage. It's too narrow for him to get into. If you're out of range of his steam blast, just pick him off with archery or spells.

Yeah I had this quest for companions at lvl 11, it was a glommsomething falmer and a dwarven centurion, I just had to kill the falmer, but 2 power attacks could kill me.

The Centurions are both amazing and lame at the same time.

Amazing because they look badass and are really tough (at least on expert) to beat.

But they're lame because they are foiled by stairs. I encountered one in a dungeon and i was low on health so i ran up some stairs to heal, well i say stairs, they were about as wide as 5 centurions and each step up was tiny in height so surely something as awesome as him could simply walk up them and chase me.

But no. Turns out tiny stairs foil Centurions. So i just stood at the top with my bow and spammed at him until he died. Kinda ruined the drama a bit :(

My first one followed me up the stairs... halfway... then he got stuck and I went down and just peppered him with arrows... Most anticlimactic battle ever.

I was so frustrated with the last Dwemer Centurion and Falmer Shadowmaster fight for a while. No weapon I had seemed to hurt the pair enough, and no armor I had could resist the Shadowmaster attacks and the Centurion steam. The few time I got them separated, the Shadowmaster attacked me relentlessly, and if I damaged him enough, he healed himself faster than I ever could. Then I decided to change tactics and it was really easy this new non head on way.

1. Before opening the door to the last section, I took my companion (Lydia) back to the Shimmermist Cave portion of the dungeon, just to get her her out of the way and keep her alive.
2. Got back into the Shimmermist Grotto already clear of everyone except the last two nasties, and opened the door to the Dwemer ruins.
3. Snuck in and put an arrow into the Shadowmaster, and ran back to the first tunnel and went around the corner and crouched, to see hidden icon.
4. Went back in and repeated step 3 a few time until the Shadowmaster started healing himself partway through his bar with each arrow.
5. Readied my strongest weapon, ran in as close as I could, stopped time (I think), and crawled inside the tent.
6. The Centurion could not get inside the tent, and wouldn't blow steam inside either, so I started wailing on the Shadowmaster who had crawled in behind me and finished him off.
6. Just hit the still visible and now helpless Centurion with ranged fire staff or sparks, or whatever I could find, and he died after a lot hits.
7. Went back and got Lydia to carry all the heavy Dwemer scrap metal, as she was sworn to do.

Ive done all the Companion Guild quests up to the main story chain with the Dragon and that Barrow and I never saw anything like you guys are describing. Mind you I did what I had to do and register the quest as DONE I never went any deeper in a few of the caves than I really needed to so maybe I missed him.
