Gold or Caps?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:20 pm

As we were left off in fallout 2 gold was the currency and the mining town redding supplied the wastes with a usable currency. Do you think currency well be gold or well they go back to caps in the Vegas wastelands? Gold makes sense because gold was in fallout 2 and the locations in fallout 2 are closer to New Vegas than the Capital wastelands. Who knows maybe they well return to caps?

Gold dust could theoretically work, but I think (as suggested by others) poker and other gaming chips would be a more likely alternative.

Casino chips :) since it's Las Vegas!

But I'd prefer the bottle caps, no matter if it's unlikely or not that they'd use them, I still think they are cooler.

possibly the main currency is caps but the NCR brought gold coins from back west which equivalent to caps to most vendors. It really wont matter to me to be honest, I get paid for killing zombies with nuclear catapults. At that point I dont care HOW I'm paid.

poker chips for vegas, bottlecaps for the rest of the land.

this is what i posted on another thread regarding currency:

"i honestly could see that happening. i could also see how poker chips are the only accepted currency within the new vegas city limits, everywhere else is just bottlecaps. so if you come to the city and want to spend, you have to convert bottlecaps to poker chips. i could see there being different locations that give you different rates upon conversion (example: one place gives you 20 chips for every 50 bottlecaps). there could even be a perk called something like "chip on your shoulder" that allows you to evenly swap bottle caps for poker chips (no exchange rates)."

No, not chips.

*Runs into baddy with flamethrower.* Messages pop up: "All your chips have melted away..." "Big plastic ball added to inventory"

Gold, due to the simple fact that it is backed by the NCR, Vault City & New Reno, while no one backs caps anymore(the Watermerchants in Fallout 1 did). Caps were put in Fallout 3, simply to appeal to the "cool factor", they made no sense....(though much of Fallout 3 didn't make sense).

no vote because logical answer is caps should be replaced with chips as there are more chips in vegas than people

Eh, I like the idea of casino chips.
But they'd be terribly easy to just make more of, and would very easily lose it's value.

Kinda like the approach Metro 2033 is going for, where amunition is currency. That way you'll have to think about what you're doing, you really want that sweet set of armor, but can you afford running into the wasteland with only one spare clip?

Never played that game but I agree that ammunition makes more sense as a currency than bottle caps.

Gold makes the most sense because I'm sure people would start mining, even primitive humans mined for minerals and gold.

I think there should be counterfeit in the game with the ability to create counterfeit currency, although if you get caught using them... Vegas is known for its organize crime...

Also I think there should have been the option to produce counterfeit bottle caps with the ammo press in The Pitt..

It makes complete sense. Why is paper valuable in the real world? Caps is just a common currency backed by powerful people.

I voted caps, though poker chips is the most likely due to the abundance.

Because it signifies a certain amount of actual resources (nickel, copper, gold, etc). That's why printing off more money randomly = bad. That money has to stand for something.

I think either: some more standard form of currency (the bottle caps are getting old) - Casino Chips that have been imprinted like our coins

Or, some sort of electronic card that carries currency you have to deposit with a central computerized bank..... would only be currency in the city....

I never really understood the 'bottle caps' as currency. Outside of New Vegas I'd like to see it be based strictly on barter or each main settlement have its own currency which is highly devalued everywhere else.

I say caps. It has that oh-so-pleasant post-apocalyptic feel to it. Plus its Vegas what would be more abundant than bottle caps... mind you BEER caps and not soda, but beggars can't be choosers. Gold is over-used and unoriginal. :goodjob:
