Anska, if she were available. Sigh. :( She throw herself against a dragon priest and half of the times she's able to hold her own ground against him with powerful fire and lighting spells; she can also cast proper restoration spells.

As long as you dont find them at an early level, they stay the same level you were when you first find them, the higher level, the better spells and whatnot they have, there is a battlemage in solitude if I remember correctly as well for hire.

Aranea from Azura's Shrine.
I was thinking this one as well. She also can come with a tracking arrow.
Spoiler
There is a random encounter, in which a Dark Elf Mage is on a pilgrimage to the shrine. If you have completed the Black Star quest, it will restart the quest in your log to "Visit the shrine of Azura". This will tag her with a quest arrow. You can then keep track of her at anytime she may get lost, just by activating or deactivating the quest. It will still track her if you kill her and use her as a Dead Thrall.

I have a mod that lets me edit my NPC's to level with me if i choose. I can also edit their appearance and delete certain things like Aerin's "Stalk Mjoll the Lioness on her honeymoon" script, really handy.

That mod should be implemented into the consoles, it would only make sense to have your followers level with you >_<. Either that or they have down syndrome.

You should provide a link, if it's not much of a trouble.

Illia (Darklight Tower)
give her a couple ice or flame staves(you should be tripping over them by lvl 20) and she turns into a monster. With me being warrior, she takes down as many as I do, and usually before I can lay a blade on them.

I tend to pick followers who’s strengths are not too high.

At the moment I'm using Brelyna and I carry a few staffs for her to use. I wait until we are near someone who is hard to kill or lots of attacks at the same time, then I give the staffs to her just before we go in.

Every time a follower kills someone or something it's points off me levelling up ~ I don't want my followers doing all the killing ~ I tell them to wait while I go on & clear a good section then go back and get them.

They help me out when I need it but apart from that they are basically a mule there to carry all the loot we pick up

That's busted. <_<

Do their levels 'lock' when you meet them or when you discover their dwelling/lair/area?

For example, would Aranea's level be set once you get close enough the Shrine of Azura to turn it white on the map or do you have to engage her dialogue options?

It's when you enter their "cell", which is a unit of geography that the game uses to keep track of stuff. Interior and exterior regions and the stuff inside them are defined by what cell they are mapped to. Aranea's stats will get locked when you enter the Shrine of Azura cell, which can be tough to delineate, as the map markers are not necessarily "discovered" at the edges of the cell region -- you could be quite a ways into the azura cell before the map marker "happens".

I used Brelyna as a follower. The girls a pyro, I gave her a fire staff and she lit up the whole room. She also likes to conjure that big walking ice cube. She will equip light or heavy armor. She uses a bow and will use an upgraded one.

I havn't used Brelyna but from what I've seen on paper she should be the best choice given that she has conjuration and alteration as primary skills (Barriers and Atronachs) and doesn't have a melee weapon fixation like many of the other mages (ie j'zhargo), which should make her very difficult to kill

If you do use Brelyna make sure you have her wait when you come upon swinging blades until you stop them, because if not, she gets knocked into the wall and doesn’t come back until you move into a different zone.

so thats it? they're level just sticks? what if you pick someone up , use them for a while , and then let them go and get someone else for a while. and then go back and get the same follower several levels later? are they still then at the original lower level you first hired them at?

Brelyna kicks ass! She was conjuring Flame Atronachs at lvl 10 and laying waste to everything.

I like to use Eola when I need a mage.
Used the aforementioned character editor to get her to level with my sprite (and changed the dead eye). Good combination of conjuration and destruction.
My character can conjure twin Dremora Lords and is handy with destruction spells so I like to swap my followers around. Most times an archer is handy as a companion. I need to get a clear shot at the enemy; melee based followers can get in the way.

Eola has rage issues...

She wiped out almost everyone in Whiterun for me. http://youtu.be/IETpopNFikg
