Good House to Settle In?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:10 pm

Hey there, guys. As a handful of you may know, I have a Lvl. 4 Altmer mage named Sykalir, and I have a couple of questions about which house I should live in and how to get the money to buy it.

1. Which house would fit my RP personality best? He's a semi-arrogant mage who wants easy access to magical equipment.

2. What magely thing would you suggest I do in order to get more money? I've already ruled off killing Giants for now, as they can tw-shot me before I even dent their health.

3. Is it too early in the game for me to be thinking about buying a house?

Yeah, the only thing is there aren't any free unowned beds in the college.

1) Hmmm... Almost certainly the house in Solitude, or possibly Markarth, I forget the names
2) College quests?
3) Depends. If he's really snooty he might like a house ASAP

Nah, he's only arrogant enough to demand access to magic stuff. He would like one fairly soon though.

Also, is Markarth far from Winterhold? I don't want to stray too far. And the college quests require me to travel a lot, which i'm not too fond of. I would, however, wander without any particular destination in mind, looking for ingredients. Are there any good ones near the college/markarth?

!: I think an arrogant mage will prefer the Proudspire Manor(Solitude) as it is the most expensive house in the game. I am not sure of the other houses would be pleasing to Sykalir as they are much more Nordic in design. Well, Vlindrels Hall(Markarth) might fit as well.

2: I would say do some dungeon diving.

3: I don't think you can classify any level as too early to get a house, storage is always useful. The thing you should consider is "Do I have the money to buy the house I want?"

Edit: If you want to live near Winderhold you should consider Hjerim(Windhelm).

Thanks, Tdroid. It looks good, especially 'cause of the Enchanting & Alchemy.

Yeah, it has a very cool enchanting room. Suiting for your mage, I am sure.

Yes there is. In the Hall of... I forget the name, but when you join the college you're given a dorm-room type of bed where the other students live. I think it's the first bedroom on the right as you enter. Obviously, if you become Arch-Mage you get the AM quarters with its own alchemy and enchanting tables. But it's a hassle to live in and if you decide to marry, you can't move your spouse there (lame).

The next two options are Honeyside in Riften and Vindrel Hall in Markarth. Honeyside is easily the more efficient of the two but nowhere near as cool as Vindrel. But neither place is ideal for the character decribed by the OP.

I personally hate Hjerim. It's the most ineffiicient of all the homes. Proudspire is nice but from level 4 it's going to take some time to save up the coin to buy it (plus the upgrades---total around 38K).

So, since this thread exist. I don't want to steal this OP's thunder, but I wonder what kind of house I should buy too.

My secondary main character Helios who is a spellsword. He's not very arrrogant or snobby for a Breton. Actually it's pretty awkward that he may even get a house. The culture and society he lived in was Nomadic. See in his history Helios was born into a group of Bretons whom years ago separate from the cities and the main way the Bretons lived in order to become completely intuned with the magical world around them. Helios is blind, but he uses strings of magic in Skyrim to help guide him along.

The thing is I have so much stuff in my inventory that no one can buy because they are so dirt poor, that I am considering getting Helios a house to put his junk.

Seeing as he is going for an all practical approach I would say Breezehome, in Whiterun.
