Recently, we found some unusual search traffic while performing routine maintenance on one of our data centers. After collaborating with security engineers at several companies that were sending this modified traffic, we determined that the computers exhibiting this behavior were infected with a particular strain of malicious software, or “malware.” As a result of this discovery, today some people will see a prominent notification at the top of their Google web search results.

I personally think this is a good thing. I hope to see more of it in the future.

The virus sends traffic through a specific proxy, so if you are using that proxy, you see the message. Technically if someone without the malware were using the proxy, they'd see the message too. So it can't really tell if you are infected, just tells you are using the proxy of known infected PCs.

no idea what that means but thanks. there isn't much that I could do even if I ended up with a virus (well I could, but i don't want to give up the cash to have my computer fixed) so my attitude is all about prevention rather than detection.

image your c drive. Then you can restore the image over the virus, wiping it out. Create a new image every month and keep the last two (at least) and you'll be well prepared for any infection.

Plus, you'll have a very handy backup.

How does that work? Do you make a file the same size as your C partition, like an archive?

No.

http://redobackup.org/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/ (would normally link to clonezilla.org but the website seems down)

It won't take up as much space as your C drive, as there's empty space on there. It won't even take up as much space as your used space due to compression. I create an image of every PC I set up. The last PC I set up had about 40 GiB of data when I imaged it, and the image only took up 15 GiB total (I think I got some super-bonus for deduping as 8 GiB was the OEM recovery partition)

Edit: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/, but I've never used it as I prefer the above tools so I can't say how it compares on compression or other feature points (I know for Home Premium you can't store the image on the network, whereas the above can)

Edit2: Great. I've officially off-topic'd my own thread :P

Thanks, will come in handy since I tend to reinstall Windows fairly often for various reasons.

Anti Virus protects your computer from viruses. This just informs you that you're infected.
