Alrighty then, I got near 75,ooo gold, and I want Proudspire Manor. Only problem is when I talk to the Jarl of Solitude or any of her Thanes, Court wizard, or servant, i can't ask for a job to get my house other than the vampire quest for the wizard. And that still didn't land me the option of buying the damn house. Is the house story-related? or has my game glitched?

Have you done the Elisif's Tribute quest? It's also a prerequisite. You may to have ask her if there's anything else you can do for her (or the city) before she brings it up, as it may not be offered without the right prompting. I just haven't done it in so long I can't really remember.

Did you do the wolf queen job?

Lol, that's a good question, I just assumed. I think I confused the 'vampire job' he mentioned with the Potema quest. But it sounds like he can't get the Steward to give him the Potema job. There's not a prerequisite for that, is there? Maybe a required level? I know there's one for the followup.

I don't remember having to talk to anybody else before getting it from the steward, though, other than maybe having some NPC I passed mention it without prompting.

There's no pre-req (either level or quest) for The Man Who Cried Wolf. Once that part's done, there is a pre-req of Level 10 AND at least one level up after completing Man Who Cried Wolf to trigger Wolf Queen Awakened, which is delivered by courier. I think you also have to leave Solitude at least once in between but that may be a bug rather than a feature.

Then there's the Thane favor already mentioned for Elisif. After that, it's house buying time.

You don't have to do the second Potema quest to buy the house, just the first one and then Elisif's Tribute. After those two are completed the house should be available.

But don't you do have to do the second Potema quest to become Thane and get Jordis as a follower? I know the OP didn't ask about that but I'm wondering. I have some money to throw around and would like a new follower.

Maybe it was just my timing, but I could not get Elisif to give me the tribute quest until after finishing the second one. I didn't get the dialog option. Hmmm... I'll try it again this time and see what happens.

Not according to UESP; to become Thane you just have to befriend Elisif, do the usual five "favors" for residents of the Hold, and buy property in the city.

Buying property in the city requires you to do Man Who Cried Wolf and Elisif's Tribute. Befriending Elisif seems to be tied into the second of those, or maybe both. Either way you can't buy the house without doing both of them. After that you should be able to get the standard Thane dialogue options with her and once you've completed the required five favors in the Hold, she should make you Thane when you talk to her again and tell her that you've helped her people. If you've already done 5/5 favors already you should be able to tell her so immediately and get the title, or just disengage from conversation and then re-engage. I think that part of it was a little buggy at first but might have been corrected in a patch, I'm not sure.

The second Potema quest shouldn't have anything to do with buying the house or becoming Thane. It does get you the Shield of Solitude, though, IIRC.

Jordis is not a very effective follower. None of the Housecarls are, actually. Hirelings are the good ones.

Okay so what if i am already level 81 (Which, apparently, is the highest I can go) How would i go about completing said task?

Okay now I'm confused, because I could swear the wiki says you only need to do the first Potema quest (Man Who Cried Wofl) and Elisif's tribute plus the five favors to become Thane.

The official guidebook says you have to do all of that plus the second Potema quest.

However it still says that being able to buy the house is the "reward" for doing Elisif's Tribute, after completeing Man Who Cried Wolf. You should not need to level up again and go back and do the second Potema quest (Wolf Queen Awakened) just to buy the house.

So according to both sources, you should be able to buy the house after doing the first Potema quest, and the Elisif's Tribute quest.

I am unsure about becoming Thane now, because I can't remember how it worked when I did it, it was two characters ago. But if the guidebook is right, at level 81 you will never get the last required quest because you have to level up first and that's impossible if you're already topped out. Don't know if there's a fix for that or not.

The guide book is correct. You have to do the second part of "The Man Who Cried Wolf" in order to obtain thanehood in solitude.

As for these two you only have to do the first part, plus the other favors to get the actual house. The second part lets you become Thane. I've just done the first part on one my newer saves and been allowed to buy the house, currently doing second part now.

I have to disgree with you. Your follower's effectiveness depends on the level your character is at the first time you encounter them. For example, a lot of people think that Lydia is an inherently weak follower because she's usually the first follower you get; and often times you get her when you're at a low level. And since followers don't level up along with you, it's only a short time before she becomes ineffective. The same goes with any hireling. If you stroll into the Drunken Huntsman for the first time at level 3 and hire Janassa, then she'll be at level 3. If you encounter her for the first time at level 30, then she'll be level 30, etc.

All Housecarls can level up to 50, thereby making them potentially more effective than most others. J'Zhargo can level up to 81 so he's the most powerful one in the game.

To level followers you need the Wabbajack.

1. Get the Wabbajack

2. Have your follower with you and then dismiss them ("It's time for us to part ways").

3. Fire the Wabbajack at them until they become a chicken, rabbit, or mudcrab

4. Wait for them to return to their normal form and then they'll be at your level provided you're not above their level cap.

5. Then tell them to follow you again and now you have a follower that's your level

6.. IMPORTANT: Save before you do this because often times they'll be killed by the Wabbajack. If they turn into a pile of gold or a sweetroll it means you've killed them. So reload and try it again. If you kill them-kill them, reload and try again.

Wrong, completely totally and entirely wrong. "The Wolf Queen Awakens" is required for nothing. Only the first part "The Man Who Cried Wolf" is required for the title of Thane.

I'm thane of Solitude on several characters and never had to do the second leg of the Potema series for it. It does, however, count as one of the 5 favors towards becoming thane.


Here is the list:
1. Wolf Queen Awakens
2. Take the horn from Elisif to the Talos shrine in tribute to Torygg.
3. Buy house.
4. Do 5 favors for people of Solutude.
5. Become thane of Solitude.

My current "main character" is thane of Solitude and still has the Wolf Queen Awakens quest in her log.

If memory serves, the Wolf Queen Awakens becomes available after you listen to someone from Dragon Bridge ask the Jarl for backup against a threat. That's when you can offer to help and the Steward makes the quest available to you.

Nope, Wolf Queen Awakens is the second Potema quest. You get it after you've completed the first one, left Solitude, and leveled up at least once. A courier delivers a letter from Falk asking for you help because the problem wasn't completely resolved the first time around.

At least that's how I've always gotten the second quest.

For Solitude you need to first do a quest for the steward, then a favor for the Jarl. At which point your allowed to buy a house and become thane if you've completed the five favors.

Whatever happened to just having money and buying a house? I can guarantee you that Nazeem didn't have to quest to get residence in Whiterun Hold.

In actual medieval society the right to own property was a big deal. Nazeem was very likely born and raised in Whiterun or spent years building relationships and connections. Your just some adventurer you need to prove your worth before they let you buy a house in the city.

Yeah I agree with Lord Vukodlak, Back in medieval times to own a house was to prove you were above the common rubble of peasants and the poor. I have bought all the houses in all of the holds, and my favorite so far is Markarth. Best place ever. I guess now is a good time to tell you guys I figured out how to buy the stinking Proudspire Manor? You know, the one where you can get literally lost in? I swear, worst way to spend 25ooo gold ever...

Never had an issue with PS3 getting the Riftin home.

But on the PC I have tried to get the home doing exactly the same thing as before. Usually the find and kill the Skooma dealer.

Well anyway the offer doesn't come up at ALL. A bug or do something wrong? Guess I still have breezehome.
