They are the most powerful revolvers, and most powerful lever action rifle in the game.

The Brush Gun is technically more powerful than the sniper rifle, but does less critical damage.

Doesn't sound very powerful? Hunting revolver!

As in the revolver you would use if you absolutely had to go bear hunting using a revolver.

No, the Brush Gun does more critical damage. It has the same standard 2x damage crit modifier as almost everything else (including the sniper rifle).
What it has less of, is critical chance. It's the standard 1x crit chance, no sixy 5x like the sniper :(
So sniper rifle will do more damage on average than the brush gun, but if you're going for sneak attack crits, brush gun will do more.

Since the patch where the highly armored opponents have been nerfed to 15DT, even the .45-70 Gov't Hollow Point does decent damage against armor, which is good because the Gun Runners stocks the .45-70 Gov't Hollow Points regularly and if you have the hand loader perk, you can take the spent casings and hand load .45-70 Gov't SWC rounds FTW...

get to about level 16, then visit gun runners. you'll find out ;) hint: repair is tied to guns skill just as science is tied to energy weapons.

I want a Brush gun so bad. I use a 45/70 in real life for hunting and want to try it out. Still haven't found one. I know who is supposed to sell them but either it's bugged and they don't have it or I bought it early and traded it rather than repaired it without realizing what it was. :( That name, "brush gun" fooled me.

It should be a part of the Gun Runners stock once you hit the right level. If I remember correctly I first saw it there around level 12 or so...

Yeah, I think the Deathclaws were most affected by this bug given them a whopping 30DT pre-patch...

If you've got the cowboy perk you'll still be doing more damage with the Brush Gun I think.

It's not really something that they only have one of, like That Gun. Come back later and they will have another.

Good luck finding allot of normal 45-70 rounds. Hollow points are way more common, but they'll do just fine when used correctly. Load them into a Brush gun or Sequoia for some epic sneak attack damage rolls of over 1,000 points. That's enough to kill anything in the game in one hit.

Yeah with cowboy Brush Gun does nearly 100 damage non-crit. Only about 30 dmg less than a sniper rifle crit.

Well, according to the wiki, because the Brush Gun is such high base damage, hollow points do more damage than standard .45-70 on any enemy with 14 DT or less (18 with cowboy). Considering the highest DT on any enemy is 15 (I think, on deathclaws. Used to be 30 but got fixed to 15 in a patch), there's really no reason for anyone to worry about not having enough standard ammo.

I wish they would do a .45-70 sniper rifle......a single shot rifle with one of the long-ass barrel mounted scopes like the Sharps Express rifle. Having it qualify under the Cowboy perk...as it is a weapon from that era...would make it even sweeter.

Much as I would love to see a scope on a Brush Gun (what you are asking for) it would make the AMR instantly useless. Brush Gun with HP ammo does instantly kill a Deathclaw with a sneak attack torso shot on normal difficulty.

AMR is magazine fed......what I am talking about is a single shot rifle. You fire, open the action and extract the empty, then stick a new one in and close it up again. Trying to use it if the enemy can melee you will get you hurt bad.

You have excellent taste, my friend. I also love the aesthetic on http://www.cimarron-firearms.com/Accessories/images/MalcolmScope-RearMt.jpg. :)

For trivia, the Sharps and derivatives use what's called a "falling block action". I've seen some people call them lever action, and that's not correct. In a lever action, the lever moves the bolt, which on the backward movement extracts and ejects the chambered empty, and on the forward movement strips a round from the magazine and chambers in. In a falling block action, the lever lowers the block, which allows the empty to be pulled from the chamber manually, and then you slide in a new cartridge also manually.

One shot. One Hit. One Kill. An enemy that can melee will be shot from very far away or from a dark shadow if in the rare enclosed space. Doesn't matter if it's magazine fed, or a civil ware era muzzle loader, if the only shot fired is the killing shot.

In game I have a very low rate of fire with all the scoped weapons when sniping unless abusing the killcam. First shot kills something and it's nearby buddies starting looking normally starting at the corpse of their fallen comrade. Scope in the next target and wait for the animation to change signaling it's gone back to idle briefly. Kill that target before it goes back into a more alert status and just keep doing that until all targets are down.

Point being, a scoped weapon in the guns category (firing the .45-70 round) that has the hitting power anywhere close to the brush gun would obsolete the AMR, unless there was some huge penalties involved. No, the rarity of the ammo isn't enough. The trick to getting the ammo is pickpocketing the cases from veteran NCR rangers. Zero fail rate and no karma/faction hits. Swinging through Camp Golf every few days will keep the supply of high quality, hand loaded, .45-70 rounds up.
