GPU Freezes at Resolutions Higher than 1440x900

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:55 pm

On my system, New Vegas causes my display adapter to freeze, hang, lock up, and pine for the fjords when running at resolutions higher than 1440x900, e.g. 1920x1200. Metric-wise, the GPU temperature reaches 99C and the fan hits 100%, i.e. the GPU appears to be stuck in tight loop. The freeze occurs in both windowed and full screen modes. I have to power down the system to allow the display adapter to reset and initialize properly. I didn't experience this problem with the original release of the game, but as we all know, once you've upgraded, it's impossible to reinstall and run an earlier release thanks to Steam (or Bethesda's particular use of Steam). And yes, the problem occurs after a "clean boot," and I have only the Microsoft-supplied DirectShow filters installed. With the last update, it's almost as if Toyota had come around to my house and removed the accelerator from my car as a permanent fix to the sudden acceleration issue.

Edit: The GPU always freezes as your character is standing up, just after selecting or customizing your facial features.

On a side note, is there a fix for Doc Mitchell's dialog and lip synchronization issue after you enter your name? It looks like either the script doesn't match the recorded dialog or the synchronization API can't cope with the dialog as spoken, depending on how it works. No idea.

99C (210.2F) is too hot. Most graphics cards peak at around 85C or less. Check the GPU's HSF and make sure it is working properly and clean of dust.

It is, it's clean, and it's a newish card. It's an EVGA GeForce GTX460 1024MB SC EE. I have open support cases with both Bethesda (who appears to outsource at least some of their customer support) and EVGA. Bethesda support has been going in circles for the last two weeks and mostly ignoring the content of my messages opting instead for canned responses. I just opened the case with EVGA today after reading about overheating issues with this particular card. Maybe the external exhaust design isn't working out as planned. We'll see how it goes. Regardless, the card works fine and performs quite well with other games at 1920x1200, including other Gamebryo games (Oblivion and Fallout 3), Crysis, and DiRT 2.

Speaking of Gamebryo, it looks like ownership of the engine is up for grabs as of November 11. I wonder if ZeniMax will make a bid?

Not all games will run the GPU at 100% and all times. Now it could be a power related issues (Power supply isn't giving enough power on +12V or one of the required +12V plugs isn't connected). The highest my card (Radeon 3870) has gotten is 92C, but it usually drops to the 80s soon after.

On Gamebyro, I really doubt it. Short term Bethesda (ZeniMax) will use Gamebyro, but they will probably move toward the id Tech engine when they can.

My PSU has two +12V plugs on (I think) separate rails, but I need to double-check. I also need to plug the whole system into a watt hour meter and check that I'm not pulling more than I should be pulling. If all looks good with the card and the PSU, I'm going to see if I can capture a trace prior to the lock-up with PIX or another tool and isolate the problem.

99C is really hot (1 degree away from boiling water). These cards can run hot but thats pushing it. If you're cooling by convection bare in mind that the temperatures
your going to see depend alot on ambient temperatures. Running the card consistently at those temps can really quicken its lifespan.

I have the exact same card, and I run at 1920 x 1080 without going over 80°C. I don't think my fan has even gotten close to 100% either, it usually runs between 40 and 60% of max. Your video card definitely should be performing better than it is.

Wow !
I worry when my GPU gets above 50c under load. ( 5970 )

GPU heat not only affects the video card but any surrounding components, CPU,MB, RAM.HDDs etc

Yes, of course, which is why it's a problem that something in New Vegas--or a combination of New Vegas, display adapter, and all bits in between--is overdriving the card to the point that it fails. If it's the card, EVGA's lifetime warranty kicks in, so no worries there. If it's the game, well, it's up to wishes and prayers, I guess.

I haven't done any tracing yet, but the game doesn't crash when running on the debug build of Direct3D 9. Debug logs show lots of memory leaks after exiting the game normally, though. One thing I do see while the game is running is a repeated sequence of "Direct3D9: (WARN) :Ignoring redundant SetSamplerState. Sampler: n, State: 10" messages ending with "Direct3D9: VS->PS Linker: X442: (Warning) Current pixel shader declares that a 2d texture must be at sampler [3]. However, sampler [3] currently has a cube texture set."

How do I completely disable threading in the game? A clean run under a debug build typically masks a race condition of some sort.

The game also leaks memory. Log attached here in case a developer happens to be reading and wants to compare allocation sizes. It's otherwise not very useful.

Spoiler

The GTX460s normally run quiet and cool which is why most people can get a decent overclock with them.
With a graphics intensive game I typically see a peak temp of 72-75c and fan speeds of 50-55% - AND
I o/c from 675/1800 to 750/1980. FNV *isnt* graphically intensive unless you run a shedload of mods.
Im getting similar to Lefty - 1920x1080 HIGH preset - only mods are Fellout with the Nightvision addon.
I see max temps of 60c with this game and no evidence of any memory leak.

What are the typical temps your other games get the card up to?
Are you overclocking the card at all (beyond the factory settings)?
What is the ambient temperature around the computer (im assuming fan cooling)?

Baseline (at desktop) is 40C. I haven't changed the factory settings. I haven't looked at metrics for anything else, but I'll take a look at what I have installed.

Recall from my original post that temperature and fan control are nominal until I click the done button in the facial features dialog. As soon as I click done, the fan kicks into high speed, the temperature climbs, and the display adapter freezes shortly after that. As long as I play at 1440x900 or lower, that doesn't happen.

EDIT: Hmmm. Hits 99C and 100% in Crysis at 1920x1200 will all the bells and whistles enabled but doesn't lock up. Time to double-check all the cooling bits, I think.

Well, I can now lock up the display adapter using EVGA OC Scanner's default settings at 1920x1200. So, it's not Fallout's fault. I'd like to give the folks at Absolute Quality (Bethesda's outsourced support staff) a pat on the back for being totally useless over the last two and a half weeks by not reading my messages and instead responding with form letters.

Let's hope the customer service over at EVGA is as good as everyone says it is. So far, they've only asked if the heat sink is securely fastened. It is, but implying that a card might ship from your factory not fully assembled is a little sketchy. ;-)

maybe uninstall EVGA software and try MSI Afterburner - don't touch fan or clock settings - just use it to monitor temps and fan speeds.
to isolate EVGA software as a possible cause ...
