Well, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Installing the drivers seems to do nothing... My background, startmenu, games (got a "not able to render" error message from skyrim) seem to indicate that there are no drivers installed. Guess these drivers are just not compatible with my notebook

Have you tried Acer's support website?

Yup, there' s a bunch of drivers from 2009 for ATI downloading them right now. Only one thing concerns me thought: seems like they are for 64bit, my system is 32 bit. According to Acer it should be 64, but windows tells me otherwise. Should I try the 64 bit version of the drivers you showed me?

Don't download a driver older than your chipset (Jan. 9, 2009).

Post a dxdiag report, that should be able to confirm the operating system.
To post one, click the Windows Start Menu icon/orb, go to Search and type: dxdiag
When the program finishes, click the Save All Information button, and copy the contents of the dxdiag.txt created. Post them here in spoiler tags.

Drivers are the bane of my pc gaming existance. It is so hard for me to update them and get it right. Having to use weird 3rd party programs to truly clean things, then having windows auto install god-knows-what drivers when it restarts, even though the settings are set to not auto-install. I seriously hate it. Rarely if ever, have I installed new drivers and found some improvement that was worth all the hassle. I try to leave well enough alone.

I'm still using 11.X drivers on my 2gb 6950.

Looks like 32-bit Vista. The device drivers for the mobility Radeon aren't loaded correctly at all. Go to the Acer support website and download the VGA driver.

From the website I'm looking at it would be called VGA Driver for M9x The Mobility Radeon 4570 has a model number M92. The driver package looks like it downloads both the 32-bit and 64-bit driver.

Drivers are the bane of my pc gaming existance. It is so hard for me to update them and get it right. Having to use weird 3rd party programs to truly clean things, then having windows auto install god-knows-what drivers when it restarts, even though the settings are set to not auto-install. I seriously hate it. Rarely if ever, have I installed new drivers and found some improvement that was worth all the hassle. I try to leave well enough alone.

I'm still using 11.X drivers on my 2gb 6950.

Contrary to many people's believes, you shouldn't need a third party utility to uninstall/install a device driver. Uninstalling the device driver and letting Windows use the fail-safe VGA driver its necessary, unless you have a major problem with the normal driver. Granted the newest driver doesn't mean its the best driver, but not keeping driver fairly up-to-date can cause certain newer games not to function properly* or simply not allow your card to performance at its best.

SWTOR didn't work for me until I installed Catalyst 12.1, black cutscenes/intro.

Only thing that's spoils my joy - seems like I messed something up regarding the ATI HDMI sound settings during the uninstall process... Well, tomorrow I'll try to fix that.

Fixed that one by reinstalling the sound drivers provided by acer. Thanks again, all of you were very helpful!

rolling back drivers to 12.1 My god is 12.4 horrible, for not just skyrim but for other games too, going to wait for better ones Ooooor an Nvidia>.>
