Great game - Too bad I have to start over

Post » Tue Apr 19, 2011 6:52 pm

Playing along nicely, enjoying myself. Then boom, game crashes after about 6 hours or so. No big deal I say to myself, I'll just reload....oh....hrm...my quick and auto saves are gone and my last regular save was from about 7 hours ago. Great, now I'm back barely past the beginning. Going to be super fun redoing pretty much my entire playthrough. I blame Steam, mostly because I've had crash issues with FO3, but never lost save games. So thanks for forcing me to use Steam...ing pile of crap. Sigh, back to grinding out content I've already done so I can get back to having fun again.

I feel for you, had the game lock up on me several times and I had to go back to the last save I had. I've become so paranoid by now I usually have a long list of saves so I'm never more than an hour behind if my auto's and quicks fail. It's always faster the second time around, good luck.

PC version. Realized I had at least one other regular save too, and that also disappeared. Going to have to set some timers or something to remind myself to both save the game, and exit so the saves stick. Bleh.

Good luck with your saves.
I played non-stop for over 6 hours saving not only with the quicksaves but with deliberate saves.
After reaching level 4 and doing some saving of various people and a town I made a real 'save' and played a while longer.
As with my usual method in FO3, I did a quick-save and exited the game for dinner.
When I restarted the game I found that I was level 1 back in the starting town. I poked the Esp button and hit "LOAD" only to find that ALL of my saves except the first few were GONE!

If this is the sort of support I can expect from STEAM and Bethesda, I'm going to be PI$$ED!

They better come up with a FIX for this fast and I suggest that the fix is to have ALL OF MY SAVES STORED ON MY COMPUTER where I can find them.

A VERY DISGRUNTLED ZONIE.

Ok, I thought this was just me.
I have many STEAM games and nerver has a issue with saves before.
Perhaps theres another common demonitor thats the culprit?

At any count, Im playing Normal Diff / hardcoe ON. (PC Version)

Ive noticed that my Quick Save and Auto Save does work in game. However, if the game is restarted, the quick and Auto saves revert back to 2 that are at the very beginning of the Game.
1 at Quick @ Doc Mitchels house, and the other Auto just outside of it.
I can delete them, restart the game and they revert to the same 1 saves. (yes it just recrates them)
Overwirte them & restart it reverts to the same 2.

Manuall FULL saves however, appear to work properly, mostly. I did loose 2 of them for seemingly no reason though and had to backtrack a bit. I did double check before exiting the game I had a current FULL Save as well.
Odd.
Everyone else seeing this as well?

Didn't think to look. Probably because I'm still annoyed at the game, Steam, and haven't eaten dinner. Thanks for the link, it worked. Only lost about 10 minutes now, and that's easy to make up.

Tried the fix given from the other post, no avail.
bye bye 5 hours of gameplay.

and I distinctly remember thinking "Ugg, this requires Steam? I hate Steam..." Maybe it was reading my thoughts.

Well really, you shouldn't be relying on the autosaves and quicksaves anyway. They tend to corrupt after overuse. Hopefully CASM will come out for NV soon.

It isn't Steam's fault that you relied on the autosave, something you should never, ever, ever, ever, ever do when playing Bethesda games. The game lets you store hundreds of saves for a reason. Not manually saving for 7 hours isn't a wise move for any game, let alone a Bethesda (and in the case Obsidian) game. And I'm not just talking about bugs either. What if you want to go back and choose a different perk? What if you decide killing that NPC was a bad move? What if you choose the wrong dialogue option? What if you use too many lockpicks on a lock and want to try again? What if you accidentally lock yourself out of a computer terminal? The list of reasons to manually save, and extremelly often, goes on and on.

Are you really trying to make excuses for a bad system? In every other game you can rely alot of on quicksaves and autosaves, the problem here is the Engine is just very bad in regards to saving.

I'm not making excuses, I'm giving the myriad of reasons why you should use the manual saving system. You simply cannot rely on the autosave in this game, or any Bethesda game. The manual save system is much better anyway, as long as you use it properly (i.e. not saving once every 7 hours).

Good to see there are still people unhappy with the need to use Steam with the game. But in any case, you should manually save often, and sometimes you should save on more than one slot, that's advise I'd apply to ANY game where manually saving is possible, but it's especially wise in Bethesda games as their games tend to have many bugs and its unwise to rely on auto saves. You can say that's bad design all you want but it's not going to make it any less true, and since New Vegas is based on the engine and core mechanics of Fallout 3, should you really be suprised?

Honestly, I'd make it a habit to save often and not rely on auto saves in ANY game that allows on manual saving, whether the game has been known to have problems with it or not, I just feel more comfortable relying on saves that I make myself, not to mention with manual saves, it's possible to play multiple characters on the same system, aside from using seperate profiles, you can't do that with auto saves or quick saves because they tend to overwrite old saves.

So is this problem happening with manual saves as well or is it just auto/quick saves?
