Greaves and spaulders

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:33 pm

In Skyrim they removed greaves and spaulders.

When they announced it back then players made a pretty big deal out of it, i remember OPs the size of books explaining/raging about why they think greaves should stay in the game.

So now Skyrims out and we've been playing without these 2 armor slots, what i wan't to know is. in hindsight how do you all feel about this change?

I personally couldn't care less about greaves...but i do miss spaulders.

I miss the spaulders. I always wore one on my off handed sholder, just for decoration.

Firstly, what the heck is a spaulder?

But no, I don't miss greaves in the slightest. It was always a nuisance trying to find the matching greaves and armor.

I'd prefer to have them back. I like having greaves more than these tassets and skirts. I know its a Viking theme and all. But one of the great things about Skyrim is to allow you to do whatever you want and be whatever you want. So I want to not where them.
Plus there will be the occassional situation where the top looks nice but the bottom half svcks and vice versa.

Keep in mind that they didn't keep the 'one piece suit' approach of Fallout, so clearly they are trying to find a happy-medium.

They're called pauldrons in this world, amigo :P
And I don't miss them as much as I thought I would. I wouldn't mind seeing them return, but only if that doesn't introduce a whole rats nest of new problems

I prefer having multiple shirtless options. Though I feel Morrowind went too far with having left and right Gauntlets. However I also don't find seperate pauldrons, while cool, are completely necessary.

So sign me up for seperate cuirass/greaves.

dont miss greaves. they were just one more thing to worry about. plus spaulders are built in to most armors. that is if spaulders are what i think they are.

They were in Morrowind and Oblivion.

Basicly it's an armored shoulder pad (Also know as pauldrons).

Here's and example.

The shoulder section of the inventory was cool, they were largly optional, but added good armor bonus.

It was fun to decide which kind to wear and wether to put on both or just 1

They were only a part of chest armor in Oblivion. No different than how greaves are now apart of chest armor in Skyrim....Its basically just an "Overall" armor piece now.

Just to clarify though, they aren't in Oblivion ;)

I honestly have not thought about them at all. Though I actually don't do a lot of fiddling with my armor these days.

Yeah i wish they'd allow for more customization.

But it works out the way they did it.

I definatly want greaves back. They are an extra enchanting slot on you and it just rubs me the wrong way how it is together.

For me it's more to combine with other parts.

They're called pauldrons in this world, amigo
They are two different things. Spaulders are smaller plates that protect purely from downward attacks on the shoulder joint. Pauldrons are far larger plates that cover a large portion of the shoulder protecting the wearer not only from downward attacks, but also thrusts into the armpit, and slashes from the sides.

Not that it really matters for this discussion.

It seems like they dumb down armor which is dumb in itself when they made three skills that affect armor rating. It could also have been taken out due to enchanting slots.

The reason Bethesda removed greaves and pauldrons was because it would allow more npc's to inhabit the game world and lower load times.

I dont miss greaves but i would love it if i had an option to remove pauldrons/spaulders because wolf armor would look nicer without them

Im sort of with you on this point. Combining the greaves with the cuirass was a good move IMO. But theres a drop in my heart that would still like spaulders

Taking Bethesda's PR at face value, I agree with the call to remove Should-Leg-Individual Gauntlet slots. The customization isn't worth the system resources that rendering individual Leg, should and gauntlets apparently consume.

It still svcks, but it was a good sacrifice. Like killing a squad to save a legion.
