Grenade Rifle?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 2:56 pm

Ok, so last night I found both a grenade rifle and a grenade launcher.

Now, is it just me, or did they totally mix up the names of these items? When I first saw it, I thought the "grenade launcher" was a giant shotgun. To me, that should be the "grenade rifle".

Do you think they did this on purpose just to deviate from reality, or is it a genuine mix-up?

Err....no, it isn't a mix up, more about Sawyer knowing too much about guns.

You see, 'Grenade Launcher' is actually the terms use to describe all sorts of hand held trigger grenade launching device; the 'Grenade Rifle' is call rifle because it is based off break-action rifles.

I think the name "grenade rifle" is stupid TBH. I think it shoulda been the Grenade Launcher, with the pump action thing as like a mod.

You would have to heavily modify a break-action grenade rifle to turn it into what you're describing. So much so that it wouldn't even be the same weapon anymore. You might still have the stock by time you were done... Maybe.

You couldn't keep the barrel, you'd have to weld the break-action of the barrel together and hope that it doesn't break apart blow out your eyes when firing.

Actually, the Grenade Launcher IS just a modded version of the Grenade Rifle.

The Grenade Rifle is an M79, during Vietnam a few Navy Seal teams that were using the weapon found that having to reload after every shot was too awkward during combat, so they modified the weapons, which is what the Grenade Launcher is, it's the real world modded M79, and the M79 is the Grenade Rifle, that's why both of the weapons look slightly similar too.

I guess you could say it's either a modded M79 or they made a completely new weapon out of it, since the Navy Seal's one was recognised as a completely new weapon, a pump action grenade launcher.

Interesting, show there are pump-action grenade launchers in the real world. But no Grenade Machineguns? :P BTW, how do you use the sights on those things?

Neat bit of history there. I always thought the Grenade Launcher looked more like the new stand-alone M203 though.

"Grenade machineguns" exist in the real world. They're big, heavy, awkward, and extremely destructive weapons. Mounted either on a tripod for static defense or mounted to vehicles. The US version is the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT698BOmSic, uses belted 40mm ammo (not the same 40mm as the M203 launcher uses) and is most commonly found living on top of a HMMWV. The Russians also have automatic grenade launchers on a couple of their IFVs.

End trivia. :)

And having used a Mk19 over a decade ago, I feel nothing but horror at the thought of it actually in field use. That is one of the most horrific weapons I've ever seen.

That said, the Mercy, the 40mm grenade machinegun? Too weak. Far too weak. That thing should lay absolute waste to anything in it's general blast radius.

No doubt that the Mk19 is a monster of a weapon (The US military is even updating its arsenal to make them more effective) but it would be hard to make the game with that in mind. If they were going for pure realism (which might be pretty difficult but fun considering the challenge it would provide) then you would need to contend with the fact that you likely wouldn't be able to carry most heavy weapons like the Minigun and Grenade MG... Not to mention that I should be able to shoot the Anti-Materiel Rifle through the enemy's cover.

It would make power armor more useful.

And having the launcher be a mod of the rifle is freaking stupid. I said that on the wikia months ago.

Part of that is true. The part where the 'Navy Seals modified the weapons' is not. The China Lake Grenade Launcher was manufactured for SEAL teams, yes, but it was designed and manufactured by the China Lake Naval Weapons Center in California. Only a few were produced, but it's an awesome enough weapon idea that it's no surprise it was put in game. Much like the G11 or Pancor Jackhammer in Fallout 2, you can't keep a cool-looking gun down.
